NickG Posted 28 January, 2010 Share Posted 28 January, 2010 We are not good enough, we haven't beaten any of the top 6 in the league this season, speaks for itself in terms of what would happen in the plays offs. We night get there but we wont go up. We cant just win a game 1-0, or get a lead and shut up shop, we need to score at least two to give ourselves a chance of winning as we always look likely to conceed. Strengthening the defence is a priority. Right back and Centre back with pace required. That said Pardew has done an excellent job in building the team he has, given the short time frame he had to work in so remains to be seen what he has up his sleeve in January. We should not be disapointed with not making the play offs though, given what went on in the summer and the fact its a new team. If we can add 3-4 quality signings, two of which should be in defence with a striker, Jackson and Barnard have been mentioned, i'd also like to see Jason Puncheon from MK Dons in a saints shirt, then we wil definately go up next season, probably as champions. guaranteed promotion! worth completing today! Glasgow_Saint Posted 28 January, 2010 Share Posted 28 January, 2010 To answer the OP. To reach the playoffs you need to win games......1:3 (10 wins in 26) is not play off form its mid table (and that where we are)

We've won 9 of the last 17, (32 points from 51), which is the relevant stat. If we maintain that form we'll probably be close to the playoffs but just miss out. Next season is the one..... I think you are right it is going to be a lot easier next season when teams in League 1 are of not of the standard of this season. The top 3 have been Premiership clubs in the not so distant past

I stick to facts and don’t like to fairy about. If I spoke to AP today I’d “Alan listen 1 win in 3, you’ve spent millions – whats going on!” Whereas a lot on here would say “Oh hi Alan, I’m happy to have a club love you”
DT Posted 28 January, 2010 Share Posted 28 January, 2010 1) Is the current squad good enough anyway? 2) What/who do we need to add to have a real chance of getting there? 3) This is a touchy one, are we being unrealistic? (I say no) 1) no - need new keeper and midfield old head general 2) see above 3) I'd say so, yes, but am ever hopeful we can do it. If we don't win at the weekend I think we can forget it. Alanh Posted 28 January, 2010 Share Posted 28 January, 2010 We need a bit of luck with injuries and to win a few games that we perhaps don't deserve to. We've been luck that Rickie has managed to play as much as he has, but the midfield is suffering now with injuries. I am sure that had Hammond been available on Tuesday we would have had a better chance. We also need to recognise that the new players brought in during January will need to bed in. Is it possible to get to the play-offs - theoretically yes, but in practice I think it's unlikely and we will need to put together a record breaking (for us) unbeaten run together staring from Saturday. Sanguin Posted 28 January, 2010 Share Posted 28 January, 2010 I made this over Christmas, predicting the Millwall and Brentford games would both be draws. As long as we don't drop any points to lower opposition we'll be there or there abouts at the end of the season. The two fixtures which are wins there which I'm less sure about are at home to Swindon and away to Gillingham. Looks like a tough challenge.
