Legod Third Coming Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 How many wins did we have after beating Pompey 3 0 and before Strachan left Not many I would have thought. As you say with no investment available things were not looking good Before it came out that WGS was on his way, we were on fire. Then it came out he was going at the seasons' end - and that was that. He couldn't go on, his position was untenable. It actually came out from memory the day we went to Old Trafford and Lowe afterwards said and I quote "We are looking for a manager who can come here and win"... Which was not only totally disrespectful to the man in the job (WGS) but set me up to believe we were about to appoint a top class proven manager... hmmm. sadoldgit Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 LOL! They dont need Rupert to go down this season... still would be nice though. Come on SOG admit it, if Lowe took over Pompey you'd be chuffed to bits in the same way Pompey fans have been chuffed to see Rupert in charge of Saints. I'll never forget at SMS when he came on the big screen TVs by accident and the Pompey fans cheered for him!! They knew as did we that he was wrecking our club. I woulkd have a chuckle if he took over there but can you imagine how it would feel if he turned things round there???
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 I doubt whether ML would have invested in SFC without the facilities including the Stadium which became available during Lowe's tenure. I think this a very good point and consider what is on offer down the road, we were always attractive in the long term due to the infrastructure which is partly down to Lowe as were other successes, its about being objective. sadoldgit Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 That sums up my attitude too Although after Strachan left the team were on the way down To be fair I think the demise started whilst WGS was still here. Some of his purchases were not the best and I also think he made some very poor decisions. His team for the Cup Final, for me, showed that he was more concernd with losing than winning and we lost the Cup Final at the previous drubbing at Highbury. Strachan is a good manager. I wouldn't say he was Top Class though. Let's see how he does with Boro. We had a good enough squad to stay up after he left but injuries to key players did not help. Nor did the fact that Redknapp didn't seem at all bothered about keeping us up and for a man known for his nous in the transfer market spent £6m very poorly. sadoldgit Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 You haven't got a clue sadoldgit. Last week i had a fiver on Papa Waigo to score the last goal against Exeter. With 5 minutes to go i had £40 waiting for me at Ladbrokes. With seconds to go Lambert hit the bar. I cheered the fact he missed. I collected my £40 five minutes later. For Jonah it was a similar scenario with him caring more about himself than the good of SFC. If ever there was a good reason why PLC's and football are a bad idea you only need to look to Jonah. Hi Dune, do you know Jonah? I shared a pint or two with him once and can assure you he cares as much about the club as any of us do. He is also not a "Lowe Luvvie" and was not unhappy to see him go. What he did understand though and tried to articulate is that the running of a club like SFC is very difficult and he saw the need for prudence and running a tight ship. Okay, ultimately it failed, but I think we would have been in worse shape quicker if the Board at that time had not kept a tight hand on the reins. It should also be remembered that Jonah was 100% right about Wilde. He understands finance. Many of us here don't have a clue. Sadly football now is a business first and a sport second. And I would second what someone else posted - wouldn't a better question be where is Michael Wilde now???

Despite his success with Celtic I don't think he was widely loved up there - shame he didn't take the Scotland job, that would have been interesting! If we can keep hold of Pardew I think he could become one of our best managers. We need to give him time though.

The only positive thing I can say about Wilde is that he was right that the only way for SFC to succed was to have an involvement of a ML figure. Leading us into Administration was a bizarre but ultimately very successful journey
View From The Top Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 Considering the stick he got when he posted warnings about The Wilde Bunch I really don't blame him. It was also the fact that other people in the finance industry took apart everything he said. I loved watching him flounder when challenged about the validity of share buybacks as a business tool. He talked a good game but was vacuous in reality.

sadoldgit Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 Just noticed Megson has been sacked by Bolton to be replaced temporarily by Wigley and someone else Feel sorry for Wigley, did a good job for us before he made the step up. I wonder if things had been different if someone like Bobby Robson could have been brough in as DoF to hold his hand while he got used to the new job. He was hampered by injuries to key players and not being able at that point to bring in players. Still, it is all in the past and I wish him well. saintbletch Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 So, after 2 days and 68 posts nobody has any idea what he is up to ! Ah well, such is life, I promise I will never ask again ! I don't know how up-to-date this is but according to the W H Ireland Director's bios web page.... Rupert Lowe (Non-executive Chairman) Rupert was previously a Director of LIFFE and Chairman of Southampton Leisure Holdings plc. He is currently Chairman of The Prince’s Trust (South East), and is also Director of Lowe Holdings Limited and Jubilee Insurance Limited. Rupert has gained significant financial services experience with Phillips and Drew (now part of UBS), Deutsche Bank, Barings and Morgan Grenfell. His old mate (Lord) Jonathan Marland is also on the board and they were both involved in a messy boardroom shake-up in April that saw two directors ousted that wanted to remove Rupert and some other members from the board. I don't think he's purposely keeping a low profile, I just think that whatever business interests he has are not newsworthy.

View From The Top Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 Still spot on about Wilde though Didn't take a genius to work out that gambling the house on going straight back up was iffy. Nor that the failure to do so would lead to pain. Still if you want to credit him with seeing that early then you best also big up Alpine as he also said so. No big deal with Alpine, he expects everything/one to fail! Jonah was one of the few to call it right when most people were going ape about the prospect of a new team in charge - before we knew anything about them.
