View From The Top Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 Simply not an attacking player. In fact, he's awful. All, of course, IMHO.
benjii Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 I won't slag Mills because I haven't seen much of him but I think it's pretty clear that we need to sign some cover for Harding.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 Out of his depth today, felt sorry for him coming back off though.
Trumush Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 The first sub I've seen subbed since Ali Dia. Seriously !!!

Saint_clark Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 Thought it was very harsh. Don't see what he did wrong. He certainly wasn't having a BAD game. And yeah, Wotton really shored things up when he came on...
beatlesaint Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 Subbed because our game plan had to change but Well yeah but he could have taken Antonio off if itwas just to change the game plan. Been very disappointed with Mills when I have seen him this season. He might be ok as cover for Harding but he isnt much cop as a left sided midfield player.
Bensfcno1 Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 Pardew got the re-sub spot on! Waigo and mills seemed to get in each others way, plus he didnt have a great game.Lastly as mentioned Wotton did a good job to cover the defense late on!

Waigo and mills seemed to get in each others way, plus he didnt have a great game.Lastly as mentioned Wotton did a good job to cover the defense late on! Erm that was sarcasm from me mate. He ran away from the ball, leaving it to an Exeter player, and didn't even try to tackle a bloke down on the byline but just pulled his shirt off him. Not to mention the few sliced clearances straight to Exeter lot. He has been solid most of the time, but he was f*cking awful today.

I did`nt say he was having a good game, but having said that antonio offer`s more. I thought he had 2-3 decent run into their box
markr27 Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 Mumours at the time around where I sit in the Itchen is why did AP not take Harding off (presumably the thought was to rest him and move Mills back to LB) for Wotton?

CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 It's the manager prerogative to select the team and as we won the game you can't really argue that he got it wrong - but at the very least it can't have done this young players confidence any good can it ?
beatlesaint Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 Where was Jaidi today? Being rested for Monday I would imagine. He wouldnt be able to play two games in three days.
oxfordshire_saint Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 Would be good to see Lee Holmes given a chance. Is he fit at the moment or is that a silly question?

This is the main point for me - he had done absolutely nothing wrong and he gets hauled off. Wouldn't surprise me if he leaves in january now, which is a real shame as he has bags of potential.
saintsforlife7 Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 Would be good to see Lee Holmes given a chance. Is he fit at the moment or is that a silly question? He's fit, been playing for reserves, and doing a decent job of it too
Andy_Porter Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 This is the main point for me - he had done absolutely nothing wrong and he gets hauled off. Wouldn't surprise me if he leaves in january now, which is a real shame as he has bags of potential. Agreed, he's obviously not suited to playing left wing. He's a decent attacking full back and should be played there or loaned out to a club who needs him to play full back. From all accounts he was brilliant for S****horpe last season on loan. Just doesn't seem to be happening for him with us so far.

Absolutly right this youngster could go far , you can see the talent there if you only have eyes to look . All those on here stating he's rubbish clearly don't know what they're talking about .
Saint_clark Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 The main thing that impresses me about him is that he has pace and a willingness to run to the byline. Only being 19 he still has time to improve his technical side of the game, but his mentality is fantastic already (or is was before he was double subbed).
Andy_Porter Posted 26 December, 2009 Posted 26 December, 2009 Absolutly right this youngster could go far , you can see the talent there if you only have eyes to look . All those on here stating he's rubbish clearly don't know what they're talking about . He was actually linking up quite well for the brief time he was on the pitch, probably just needs some game time. I don't see the need to sign another left back, Harding and Mills should be fine. LB is his proper position, he's not a winger imo.

Im not a fan of him, but he did make a couple of challenges, all be it also a few sliced clearance but did more to support the defense than mills and we had completely lost our shape b4 that sub! He just added an extra presence in front of our goal which enabled us to keep them out and counter attack for the 3rd! i think that Pardew deserves praise for his bravoury and believe the last goal would have gone the other way if he left it as it was!

Saint Fan CaM Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 Holmes is a better player than Mills.
team-saint Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 Holmes is a better player than Mills. In what way? Holmes is a standard left winger. Fish is a full back.

Mills cannont handle this league and has been well off the olace every time he has played this year. I'm afraid he's not going to make it...
SparkySaint Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 A sign of a good manager is a manager that is prepared to make a change like that
southamptonfclegend Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 I thought he did alright, put in some nice balls couple of nice touches, then gets taken off.. after coming on as a sub!?

Mills cannont handle this league and has been well off the olace every time he has played this year. I'm afraid he's not going to make it... You do know he was a first teamer for S****horpe who got promoted last season, don't you? And he has looked decent whenever he has come on - he is still only 19! Thank f*ck we didn't write Lallana off at the same age, eh!
niceandfriendly Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 Erm that was sarcasm from me mate. Not to mention the few sliced clearances straight to Exeter lot. He has been solid most of the time, but he was f*cking awful today. No no no no nooooo. Perfect sub by Pardew. Do you remember who it was who won the ball well to pass to Lambert who set up Waigo's goal? I think you'll find it was Wotton. He made one fantastic block late on, too. Don't get me wrong I'm no Wotton lover, but credit where credit is due. He helped us out today. Oh and as for Mills, it was just unfortunate for him because our game plan changed so AP had to sacrifice him. He wasn't doing badly, just a tactical thing. I'd like to see more of him though, I've hardly seen the lad play.
Niemster Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 I hope it was purely a tactical decision because mills did bugger all wrong, infact from what i saw he nutmegged a player and whipped in a beautiful cross. spread exeter wide and linked up with harding well.
Arizona Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 Mills is a LB, we've just been playing him LM because there is no other option. I think LM should be a transfer target in January. We need, dare I say it, a Skacel type winger. Someone who can put in a decent cross and make things happen, even if he doesn't get the goals Lallana gets.

Wotton did more harm than good when he came on.
Jack the Saint Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 Mills just took it on the chin and sat back down in the dug-out, credit to him for that, could easily have just stormed down the tunnel.
70's Mike Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 think it was purely a tactical decision because once Waigo came on we were stretched in midfield with only Hammond, MS and Mills, AP stuck PW on to break up Exeters play. imo Antionio should have gone off rather than Mills because he was poor for the last 20 mins

whizzpop Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 I dont think its fair to slate him after this game, I have been impressed with Mills's contributions so far. He was our best player against Ajax in pre-season
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 I know what I'm talking about alright. Mills is cr@p as an attacking midfielder. You may find this diagram useful :
Gis Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 Fish can be a great little left back, he can tackle, and has the pace and skill to be a real threat when defence turns to attack. He's shown all of that at U18 level and now needs to make the big jump to first team level. But for now it's simple Harding is better so he will have to bide his time. There will be a time when he makes this position his own but Pardew obviously wants an experienced player there now. It's been great seeing Morgan, Lallana, and Lloyd James make stake their claims in the team this year. To be honest with us pushing for the play-offs -that's enough youngsters for now though.
View From The Top Posted 27 December, 2009 Author Posted 27 December, 2009 You may find this diagram useful : You clearly can't tell them apart, lucky for me that I can but it's good that you've recorgnised your shortcomings are are endeavoring to do something the remedy them.
david in sweden Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 Would be good to see Lee Holmes given a chance. Is he fit at the moment or is that a silly question? Not a silly q. IMHO He played in the last reserve game and really ought to have Mills' place on the bench. Mills is still developing and Holmes does have experience of League football at a higher level then L1. If AP can put Gobern and Mellis on the bench... he should certainly consider Holmes.
david in sweden Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 In what way? Holmes is a standard left winger. Fish is a full back. Which makes me task WHY did he replace Lallana ..surely Gobern would have been a better choice?
Chez Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 Which makes me task WHY did he replace Lallana ..surely Gobern would have been a better choice? Gobern is a centre midfielder from what I can see. He came on and did a great job there at Leeds. I'm tempted to say he should be picked ahead of Wotton, but I'm reminded of his ten minute nightmare at Bristol Rovers. I think Gobern has a decent future at CM.

Mills is still developing and Holmes does have experience of League football at a higher level then L1. If AP can put Gobern and Mellis on the bench... he should certainly consider Holmes. I'm with Pardew on this - in that he continues to overlook him. Holmes is lightweight, slow and has no trick. Exactly the facits you look for in a winger.
Saint_Mabes Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 I think Wotton did a solid job when he came on, quite suprised people are questioning this sub. I'm sure AP will have explained clearly to Fish why he needed to take him off, as others said it was a tactical change he was forced to make as the game turned. I think Fish has potential but was a big fan of Holmes so would like to see him given a chance. Then if he's no good I think a LM signing is in order. Here's to a playoff place!
Crab Lungs Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 I think LM should be a transfer target in January. We need, dare I say it, a Skacel type winger. Someone who can put in a decent cross and make things happen, even if he doesn't get the goals Lallana gets. you mean, like.... Lee Holmes?
The Banana Factor Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 Pardew made a snap decision to take mills off after a very poor defensive header from him at the edge of the box. Pardew flung round and pointed aggressively at wotton. Wilkins then came rushing out of the box perhaps asking him the reason and pardew was visibly angry with him. Possibly pards felt mills wasn't keepin the shape as he had been asked to do and if so fair enough to AP to have the courage to take him off. it's just a shame for the lads confidence and that he had to be replaced by wotton who gave away 3 free kicks and possesion twice with his first five touches!!
Saint Fan CaM Posted 27 December, 2009 Posted 27 December, 2009 In what way? Holmes is a standard left winger. Fish is a full back. Exactly - if you're going to replace Lallana with someone then why Fish? Holmes would be a better choice IMO.
