I think you're wrong, when James has been available to play at RB during Murty's absences (ie not required in midfield) he has always got the nod.

There is something about Thomas that AP doesn't care for, either at CD or RB.

He plays him when he absolutely has to because there is no other viable choice.

The team for Monday will be as it was today except for Jaidi in place of Trotman and perhaps Papa instead of Antonio.

For a while, yes, but after the Norwich game Thomas was left at RB.

James was caught sleeping several times. Three or four or five times he was actually snoring in the second half!

Nowhere near good enough for this team and should be dropped now - dreadful display again!

ok, if he was dropped today we would have lost 1-0.

managers play him because he is an honest guy, gives his all anywhere on the pitch - every team needs players like that and tbh i don't think he's as bad as people make out.

He gets done for pace at times, but he's come on so much since the start of last season. He's still only 21...

Like a few have said, the midfield were quite quiet going forward today, therefore Rickie & Connolly didn't have much. Thought Morgan had a very good game along with James. Great effort by Lambert at the end! Colchester will be a big test.

But with Exeter's first half structure it was up to the full backs to get forward as the midfield was completely saturated because Exeter were playing 5 or 6 in there. They started a sort of 3-5-1-1, not much space to get forward in, but James and Harding were freed up to get forward.

Meh the game was so so some player ratings.

Bart - Did well to make one good save in the first half didn't look shaky however one poor error in the first 10 minutes almost cost us, couldn't do anything about the goal poor kicking at times - 6

James - 7.5 - The goal was completely flukey but hey he had a go! and his delivery was inconsistant but the ball for Trotmans head was superb and his corners are a bit more dangerous especially when he takes them short and whips it in nicely, defended OK, still lacks a bit positionally but a good game.

Trottman - 8 - Great goal and battled well at the back no silly mistakes very consistant seemed to be a rock back there and didn't put a foot wrong all game

Perry - 7 Would be the same as Trotman but was lucky to stay on the field for an awful two footed challenge from behind in the second half when he didn't even need to make it, was solid and only looked troubled when Fleetwood came on.

Harding - 6 - Decent in places but really quiet started off brightly but faded out and end delivery was poor on alot of occasions not good at doing the early cross enough, okay defending but let them have ALOT of space in the second half.

Hammond - 5 Didn't control the midfeild at all poor passing at times, and just seemed off the pace

Morgan - 6 faired a bit better than Hammond for some good passing but needs to shoot more and we played better when he passed the ball to Lallana and linked up made some good challenges too but again was a bit off key with passes and lost control of the middle in the second half against 10 men not a good display.

Antonio - 5.5 - Meh was fairly anoynmous poor crossing most of the time again looks exciting but flatters to decieve at the best of times don't rate him as much as waigo and poor off the ball.

Lallana 7 - Played better when he was on the ball, took some really brutal challenges and made some good passes and troubled them alot I know it seems critical sometimes he just needs to do things a bit earlier! then he would be superb but battled in there well when he was clearly targeted.

Lambert - 6.5 again when he was on the ball he linked up with the middle causing our first goal but had a tough time against uncompromising Exeter centre halfs, superb effort in the last minute! that would have been even better than his freekick, needed better delivery frustrating that we couldn't give him better balls. Didn't link up with Connoly at all..

Connoly - 4.5 - Hit the bar in the first half but apart from that was really off the pace and probably our worst player just didn't seem in the game in the slightest or dangerous didn't link up with Lambert and just not his usual self at all.

Subs -

Mills - 5 - tried to run at them but wasn't what we needed and felt sorry when Pardew took him off seemed lightweight just needs to go out on loan again.

Waigo - 8 LOOKED SO MUCH BETTER with him on and well taken goal! his pace causes teams huge problems and we controlled the game better with him in the team has to start against Colchester.

Wotton 6 - Came on barked out some instructions like the fat guy in the pub team - Ball hit him the face (important block) and then thats about all he did.. well done for blocking the shot with his face however. Otherwise hardly noticable.

Ref - 7 - good call for the red card and controlled the game well but should have sent off Perry.

Touché, but as Merrington, and the other knob kept saying "Saints need to kill this off" that would indicate that Exeter were not superior.

No it would indicate that they had us worried - 2nd half you wouldn't believe we were playing against 10 men. I thought Exeter passed it around very well - looked a good side.

Good win, frustrating win.

Lovely to see the stadium so full, worthy of Premiership teams, just hoping it won't be too long before we're there!

Exeter were determined to stop us playing football, and they did it quite well. They were the better team to start off with, and as my missus noted, our first goal was against the run of play. I completely missed the second goal, I'll have to watch the highlights tonight, but thought Papa's goal was very well taken. He's got a cool head.

Lloyd James was my MOTM today, he's still not a brilliant defender, despite all the practise he's getting in that position, but attacking he was very good, he deserved his goal. On the contrary, Harding, my favourite player so far this season, was poor. Tackling poor, going forward poor. Hopefully a blip. Perry was very good. Has there ever been a shorter centre back?

My missus (a neutral) pointed Antonio out for special mention - she thought he was very hard working, with creativity to boot. I've been critical of him in the past, and I still think he's a touch of a one trick pony, but worth a loan extention nonetheless surely.

3 points, however they come, is much appreciated. Winning against Colchester is an absolute must, though that'll be a toughie!

I don't get down to many home games, but decided to sit in block 42 for this one.

Is it usually full of nobs?

Heard several comments from uber fans about how quiet it was, obviously these gob****es were having a dig at new faces in the crowd.

And got sat next to some gobby teen who thought he was the big man giving a running commentary.

Thank **** for the away games where you don't get these w4nkers.

I used to love the Northam, but it's full of idiots now.

Question:

Is our away support better now than it has ever been because home games are so boring to go to now?

In my post above I commented on the number of nobs that now infest the Northam and I reckon this is a big reason why more and more people are going to away games. I just hope the forementioned nobs don't start travelling.

St Marys is a nice ground and all that, but it's also lacking the necessary factors to make it a great experience.

Note to Nicola Cortese - BUY THE LAND OPPOSITE THE ITCHEN STAND AND BUILD US A PLEASURE BEACH.

To be fair though, it has been louder in recent matches.

Did anyone see that **** in Block 42?

I don't think he goes to many home matches but I'm sure I've seen him at a fair few aways.

Ha Ha, i'm guessing you're a block 42'er. If it makes you feel any better what i will say is that the Kingsland and the Chapel were just as rubbish as i remember them.

If James had stayed on the near post after the corner and until the ball was cleared Exeter wouldn't have scored. Casual defending.

Bart. Made a great save down at his near post but that apart flapped at a cross or two again, and kicking was woeful. I will be much happier when KD is back.

bart may flap at some crosses. Kelvin does as well and doesn't come for as many as Bart. Give the boy a break because he is improving and given the chance will continue to do so.

Lads waving their season tickets at unfamiliar faces in the Itchen North, especially those moaning at regulars to sit down. Like the good old days!

While we're unlikely to hit the heady heights of 30K anytime soon, I hope a few more stay aways were converted today - and the divide between regulars and the rest continues to thaw.

Also hope that the club will pay a little more attention to us in the Itchen North - we've put up with alot of s**t in the last few seasons and alot of resentment ultimately spills over into relations between fans. Again unnecessary and unfortunate stuff.

What about the guy in 41 about row CC who thought he was the manager and slated Pardew for everything he did. According to him Pardew 'Doesn't have a clue and is an idiot.'. He even was telling the defence how to position themselves. Makes me laugh.

No, but James as played at RM a fair few times when Antonio and Waigo have both been options...

Because in certain situations it's better to have a more defensive right hand side rather than a traditional winger like Waigo or Antonio.

It's clear as day that our first choice right back is Murty and when he's unavailable it's Lloyd James.

I think Lloyd James would have to score 10 in a row before some people changed their opinion on him now. He's improved dramatically since last Christmas where he was just a liability.

He's still weak in the air and his positional play isn't up to scratch but he offers us a threat going forward and takes a decent free kick. A player who can play in 3-4 different positions is valuable in any squad, he shouldn't be relied upon as our main right back mind.

Andy, i'm not trying to start an argument here, but have you had a sh*t Christmas or something? You seem to have a negative outlook on everything today.

I've had a great christmas thanks, just feel people give Lloyd James too much stick all the time. I just don't understand it, usually when a players crap or shows a lack of effort I can notice it straight away, don't see why James is made a scapegoat even when he's had a good game.

A couple of idiots behind me kept banging on about him all game and it really got on my tits. They also spent the first 60 minutes calling Antonio - Waigo.

I think James is quality - in midfield, where his average pace doesn't really make a difference.

At RB though he does struggle on the defensive side of things, which is why I would like to see Thomas there for the time being. I think a new RB is needed in january though, as we can't keep saying "they'll do a job till Murty gets fit again".

Agreed that we need a new right back, I think even when fit that Murty isn't anything special.

Don't think Thomas will be involved much, I get the impression that Pardew wants him out in January.

Pleased with the win and after the mess Markus, Cortese and Pardew inherited they are showing the cretins from the last 5 years (both Board and Managers) what a professional set-up looks like.

Mixed performance today - Lallana, Trotman, James all played well today. If Trotman is going back to PNE (he'll be missed if so) we need to sign 2 new CBs next week as Perry is miles past it (although terrific player for Spurs and Wimbledon in his prime) and Pardew doesn't seem to rate Thomas so that only leaves Jaidi. We also need full-back cover, particularly at RB as Murty looks unlikely to be fit again and a second striker (Barnard of Southend perhaps?). Connolly and Harding were unusually off-colour, Lambert produced bits of magic as ever but doesn't offer anywhere near enough from open play, Antonio kept falling over. Waigo was terrific as a sub though and helped us seal the win.
