Brussel Sprouts At Christmas

What is this new thing about brussel sprouts and the festive season..? You can't blink for some particular celebrity saying how they have to be forced to eat them. And just the other day I saw an advert where some actor was talking about blaming the dog, if you eat them..! And brussel sprouts are not just for Xmas, you know.

Earlier today I bought a load of brussels for a tiny price. Brilliant quality too. I love it that people supposedly hate them. They're gorgeous with melted butter and black pepper. Yum..! And if you don't gulp them down you don't become a wind instrument either. :)

Sprouts are the veg of Kings.

Steam them and mix them with bacon pieces for a real wind explosion.

Happy Christmas everyone.

Bring them to the boil, immediately drain them and place them in a pot which should be placed in the lower oven in your AGA. They then steam in their own juices retaining all the goodness and the flavour.

I quite enjoy farting, as it happens. Sprouts are excellent veg, especially when slightly over-cooked, preferably boiled.

Some very encouraging posts in this thread. Good to see people being led by their own taste buds and not by what they're supposed to eat.

I grew up with sprouts being overcooked to the point of them almost being a form of green mashed potato. yes, I know that's how veg was cooked decades ago, but it's surprising that even today, veg is overcooked. Sprouts are absolutely beautiful ever so slightly under cooked, but when they are perfectly cooked with that bite, they are worth writing reams about. Which we are doing at the moment.

BTW, is it broccoli and almond shavings, or sprouts and almond shavings..?

Al dente - as the Italians say, to the teeth. Which is why I prefer broccoli stalks rather than the florets.

Merry Christmas

After a roast, we often have a few Sprouts left over in the net bag and was looking for a way to use them up.

They work really well in a Stir Fry, they don't get overcooked and add a great flavour to a Sweet & Sour. (Use Blue Dragon sauce not the bottled cr*p). Wouldn't do it every time but yummy

Sprouts are the only food I've ever tried that has made me physically sick. Growing up, my dad never got the hint and always put one on my plate, which of course made everything else taste like sprout. My gag reflex worked overtime.

My missus loves them. She will not be getting any loving after Christmas dinner.

Indeed, I expected to find post after post of denouncers telling me how they hate them!

I love 'em too, and haven't tried doing much with them before so I'll take up some of these suggestions when next I cook them.

This is so re-assuring as yes, all you seem to hear about sprouts is how horrible they are. Thay are the best veg ever, people who 'don't like them' ususally haven't ever eaten one.

I like them in all of their guises but last year found a new method of preparing them that simply is delishous.

1. Bring a pan of water to the boil

2. Chuck the sprouts in

3. Bring back to the boil

4. Turn gas off and leave for 20 mnutes (have a berr or glass of Sloe Gin while you wait)

5. Throw them in a blender with a pot of double cream, pinch of salt and a shake of pepper

6. Blend until smooooth

7. Taste

8. Try to leave some for your guests.

This came from a Waitrose recipe I think, it is simply gorgeous, please try it you will not be dissapointed.

The real beauty of this is that you still get to serve proper sprouts as an accompaniment.
