Cheeky Monkey Posted 24 December, 2009 Share Posted 24 December, 2009 No one has mentioned Telfer yet. I've never understood why some people rated him. As I recall - he was a decent signing and weighed in with some useful goals. Bargain at £1 million at the time as well. I don't see how any of the players that played for us in the Premiership could possibly be in a worst Saints team of the decade, bar perhaps Alan Blayney. I thought he looked good, head and shoulders above a lot of the team. Just bought 5 years too late, and suffering from injury. He also played a big part in raising the team in the play off against Derby when he came on with Belmadi and Rasiak, and played a big part in keeping us up in 07/08. SaintRobbie Posted 28 December, 2009 Share Posted 28 December, 2009 (edited) Good shout. Close the thread, Ponty has nailed it! :smt116 Agreed! Although to really add the final ingredients to Ponty's picture you need to add a picture of Lowe as Chairman and Wotte as manager - for me Wotte was easily worse than JP. That said, it is a time of good cheer and all that so perhaps lets not remind ourselves of either of them! They were all good enough to play in the Premiership! Most of the players should be from the past two years. And Wotton absolutely has to be in there. you must have been watching a different player then, from what i remember he was alwasys injured, only played a handful of games, none of which he he shone in and only scored one or two. Shame as i rated him before he joined us but hardly a bargain at £1m. His biggest success in Southampton was nailing a really fit girl who worked behind the bar in the Lizard Lounge at the time he was here.
Huntingdon Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 pulis like forecast hasn't played a game I agree, it's ridiculous to put Pulis in He's never played a first team game, so he's hardly contributed to our downfall has he? I bet there's a number of terrible players that have been on the books who never played. To many people jump on the bandwagon. I wouldn't mind betting that 95% of posters who recommend Pulis have never seen him play, and wouldn't even know who he was if they stood next to him in Tesco

Patrick Colleter may not have been great but he was much better than Olivier Bernard who was an absolute liability in a defence that had no leadership. My 11 would be Blayney Thomson Davenport Lancashire Bernard Kanchelskis Bleidelis Folly Ripley Rosler Pericard I've tried to be fair by picking players who were poor for Saints regardless of the division we were in. I wouldn't expect Thomson to be as good as Dodd or Lancashire to be as good as Richards. Unfortunately, Thomson has looked poor for us at RB and RW and Lancashire is a shadow of the player we expected to see before his major hamstring problems a couple of years back. Stattmeister Posted 30 December, 2009 Share Posted 30 December, 2009 Apologies, I've forgotten his name - Arias? The torpedo or something....? He was not too hot if I can remember. Peckhart, Kanchelskis and Almeida certainly spring to mind. It is difficult to not pick Bernard or Davenport (in fact, any of that back 4), despite us playing in the prem then. O'Halloran was so brief he can't be included, surely...? Recently, Olly "red card" Lancashire was proper calamitous, despite having a great rep. I also thought Paul Smith was pretty decent all in all - however he was in and around the team when we had Niemi, so sadly no contest for the lad. Incidentally, what was the name of that Czech Republic midfielder we had a couple of seasons ago, came as A Trialist I think, looked ok in fits and starts - curly blonde hair (no, not Bary Venison), and scored a couple of crackers. Been bugging me for weeks! Cheers!

I think we can do a lot better than Pericard although he'd be a physical presence up front for the times when Lambert is unavailable.
