Colchester is potentially a huge game, but we can't underestimate Exeter too. This game will be a slog, with the cold weather and rough'n'tuff attitude of Exeter. We should keep key players like Lambert, Hammond etc in the team but maybe rest others such as Waigo and Harding.

In my opinion we should line up like:

------------Bart-------------

Thomas--Jaidi--Trotman--Mills

------Morgan---Hammond----

Antonio----------------Holmes

-----Lambert---Patterson-----

Subs: Davis, Perry, Wotton, Mellis, Saga

That team is more than capable of getting 3 points, and we'd still have players like James, Connolly, Lallana and Harding 100% fit, who are all potentially match winners on the day. We should place the emphasis on the Colchester game, but I think we should also regard the Exeter game as important, as any points dropped could be potentially disastrous for our play-off hopes.

A week since the last game is plenty of time to be rested for a game. Saints should play strongest team available to win game rather than risk losing/drawing then adding more pressure to Colchester game.

Exeter is on Saturday 26th December, Colchester is on Monday 28th December. But I do agree with you, we should play a strong team, but making the same team play two important matches within 48 hours of each other and expect to win both of them is absurd, especially in the middle of bloody December.

Our team has been playing week in/week out since August now, players will be tired and need resting, especially the likes of DC, who's just come back from 18 months injured.

Bringing 2 of my kids (8 and 5) , my Brother in Law and Nephew (6) - all for their first game. Row C in the Family enclosure. None of them know about it as I saved the tickets for a Christmas present. Should be a good day out for them

Sounds awesome, hope they have a great day out!

FWIW, let's just get the winning ways back please... I'd like Leeds to be a "blip" rather than the end of the run, so will happily take a scuffed one nil-er of James backside... performance can follow at Colchester.

Happy Cyber Christmas y'all, have a good one!

Realistically, we should beat Exeter even with a couple of our 'star' players missing. As long as we match them for endeavour we'll be ok. We have more quality than them in every department, it's just the work-rate that will be an issue. Backed by a 30,000 strong crowd, work-rate ought to be no trouble.

In terms of the team, I think Wotton could do a job in place of Hammond...he'd be up for it too being a Devonian. Trotman and Thomas for Jaidi and Perry...don't think the latter 2 can cope with 2 games in 2 days.

It depends what Pardew has in mind as a starting 11 for Colchester. IMO he has to start there and work backwards (i.e. decide which team will play Colchester and then from that, decide which players would be ok to play 2 games in 48 hours). I know there's the cliche of 'never look further ahead than the next game' but that goes out of the window when playing twice in such a short space of time.

I don't think our record on Boxing Day has been that great in the past? Not as bad as the first match of the season but still we're not great at the 26th December game.

Hopefully the big crowd will not make Exeter play above their ability, and hopefully it will not freak out our boys. It's probably one of the biggest home crowds that the likes of James, Hammond, Lambert, Schniederlin and Lallana have played in so they need to react well and not poorly.

We must win this game if we want to have a chance of the play offs. This is Exeter. They are rubbish compared to us, and we need to make sure we prove this on the pitch. COYR!!!

Head: Saints 2-1 Exeter

Heart: Saints 3-0 Exeter

A big day out for Tisdale and his team - they will raise their game for sure - so we must be up for it too.

I think the defeat to Leeds will focus everyone - 13 games and counting after Saturday to hit the play offs according to The Echo!

And I hope memories of why we lost to Brighton will stir the players to start positively. Too often at home (not always) they begin tentatively, miskicking and generally look out of sorts, allowing away teams to dominate tackles and effort. They must not allow this to happen against a fired-up Exeter and their travelling fans. So I fear we may have to be patient and fight back after conceding an early sloppy goal.

So my message to the players is REMEMBER BRIGHTON. Keep tight at the back.

Result 2-1 to Saints, class telling after a scrappy first half.

What relevance does how a completely different set of players and coaching staff did on boxing day 10, 20 or even 1 year ago have to how we will play against Exeter?

I was looking for past results, because I thought the time we beat Tottenham 1-0 was on boxing day, but turns out it was on New Year's day. Anyway, it reminded me why I should hate Tottenham. The first sentence of the Spurs written article reads

That Spurs came away with nothing from this game is a massive travesty of justice. Southampton, ******s that they are were quiet for the first 82 minutes, did a bit of gloating and then were quiet while their no marks were hanging on and on the way out, we did not get a murmur from them
lol

Same season we destroyed them in the cup, no wonder they were bitter.

Actually this season we have started pretty well in every game, including Brighton - where Hammond missed a great chance.

What we must do is start well AND score.

And THEN keen it up.

Norwich being a prime example where we were out of the blocks early, scored but then did not pressure and kill the game early with a second goal.

Hello Norman

The christmas was exelent this year - the youngest aged 2 1/2 really made christmas fun this year.

We have about 40 centimeters of snow and -4 degrees so it perfect for wintersports now - and we don´t see footie as a wintersport sadly : )

I hope everything is OK with you and the family Norman.

Come on you reds !!!!!

I would play;

Bart

Thomas Jaidi Perry Harding

Waigo Hammond Morgan Lallana

Lambert Connelly

Subs; Davis, Antonio, Mellis, Trotman, Gobern.

Although would put matthew bound in for jaidi if hes fit:). Anyone who disputes waigo starting then look at his record, 7 goals in 10 starts! Also, vs norwich he was superb and wasnt offside once. Has to start at home imo.

Is it a SELL OUT? picked up my tickets at 9 this morning, they couldnt put myself and my 7 year old together and only 800 tickets left. Should make for a cracking atmosphere. 3-1 win

Also we need to keep winning in order to keep the season alive. If we save important players now and lose, the hunt for the playoffs can quickly fade away leaving us with less important games for the rest of the season. So we need to come out all guns blazing to keep the season interesting :)

Cant be there today due to unneccesary but diplomatically important family stuff!!! Absouloutly gutted, am sure we will bow out of 2009 with bang, play the strongest team and send a message to all those above us, we are heading for the playoffs. Happy New Year to all on the board, the nipper and I will be back at SMs for the Luton game.

was shocking against Leeds but do agree he has to start when at home

Presume the weather is nicer down south than oop north......... Black Ice and still plenty of icy snow. Our snowman is still standing guard out in the front garden, made him on the 23rd

Beers are chilling nicely in the snow (just as well as there isn't any room in the fridge  )

Hope the boys put on a great show for the sell out crowd. All too often in the past they've screwed up both home and away when they've had a massive support.

I've gone for the good old 3-1 even though it is a home game :D

Totally agree the way he links up is like a third striker whilst Connoly and Lambert cause problems, Lamberts physical presence and Connoly's intelligence and movement Waigo goes by unnoticed with his pace, whilst not a natural winger of sorts remember he busts a gut to get in dangerous positions and into the box. While Antonio looks good by beating his man and having pace on the ball off the ball he's really no danger to other teams.

Remember Waigo scores with his head and is superb in goalmouth scrambles just remember the two goals against Torquay and Norwich, a rather underatted part of his game.

Is Jaidi injured? Surely he's one of the first names on Pards' team sheet?

I'll be following the game from start to finish, but have to use my remaining two posts wisely.........

I guess he's one of the players who can't handle 2 matches in 3 days that AP was talking about

Jaidi not on subs bench even, so at a guess injured? Trotman and Perry in the middle.

Spiderman and Antonio in midfield with James to full back and Thomas and Papa on the bench.

COYS. Nothing on Saints Player yet :( No tx from Solent either yet due to them covering Pimpsqueak who are losing 1-0 at WHU :D

Aarron Martin on the bench.

Bit shocked at this to be honest. This kid has come from no-where straight into the bench of a club that has on paper one of the strongest teams in this division.

Is he really that good? not trying to suggest we are amazing or above ourselves but still seems a bit odd.

Good luck to the lad and I hope Pards has found a gem.

Will be trying to find a radio link for this one so if anyone has anything other than saints player id appreciate it.

I hope we haven't underestimated Exeter with that ridiculous back 4.With

Swindon leading at Charlton,Colchester and Norwich winning if we get today wrong our play-off hopes (slight that they are) will be toast.Especially with Huddersfield having a nice rest so that they'll be fresh to take on a knackered team on Monday. That shouldn't be allowed, they should be made to play the postponed match 2 days after another game, same as everybody else.
