macthesaint Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Really good interview/article on Steve Williams in the Pink. Some good little stories about life as an apprentice, having to deal with Ossie and Channon's jokes. He loved life as a youngster at the Dell. Wupert gets some stick over the Danny Wallace testimonial and the fact that legends of the past are not treated better by the club.He does not think someone like Lawrie should pay for a ticket. Outspoken as usual, but one of the best midfielders I've seen in a Saints shirt. One thing on these past player articles the Pink run, they never include a present day photo.I guess because the interviews aren't done face to face?
LaptopSaint Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 I used to worship Stevie Williams. ******* magic.
corsacar saint Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Exceptional player, Arsenal lost hardly any games he played for them.[shame George Graham, supposedly did not like his attitude, and did not play him as often as his ability warranted]. He won I beleive 6 England caps, scant reward for a player of his ability.
Nutwood2 Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Fantastic player. An absolute Rolls Royce on a football pitch.
Gemmel Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Fantastic player. An absolute Rolls Royce on a football pitch. Was it me or did he used to glide over the turf? A pure natural footballer, who we were lucky to see.
Dellman Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Yes he was class act and at his best in the '82 season (runners up to L'pool and semi final of Cup) but LM wrote in his book (Diary of a Season) that he was hard to handle and had an attitude problem

Dellman Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Thanks for correction, anyone know what he's doing now?
Gemmel Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 (edited) Thanks for correction, anyone know what he's doing now? wrong player - wrong tv program.....time for bed Edited 21 December, 2009 by Gemmel
scally Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 Thanks for correction, anyone know what he's doing now? Lives down near Exeter, he was buying old houses in Plymouth and renting them out last I time I heard. He's done very well for him self.
Hatch Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 My favourite ever player. Wonder what he would be worth in todays market
Nutwood2 Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 Was it me or did he used to glide over the turf? A pure natural footballer, who we were lucky to see. That's exactly the word to describe his style. He did used to glide and make it look effortless didn't he. A contrst in style to his mentor. Little Bally's short little legs pumping at 100 mph. Dave Armstrong used to glide as well didn't he.
chocco boxo Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 Arrogant interview from an arrogant player, but that arrogance made him one of the finest Saints player I have ever watched. Used to love the fact he never shied away from mixing it with the "big boys". Todays market ??? £ 22 million?
david in sweden Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 Yes he was class act and at his best in the '82 season (runners up to L'pool and semi final of Cup) but LM wrote in his book (Diary of a Season) that he was hard to handle and had an attitude problem I loved the tale about - when he was a kid he used to go to Highbury and his favourite Arsenal player was .. .Alan Ball. Some years later, Steve was playing in the Saints side ..together with Ballie, who served him up with great passes on the right wing. What a story.. to play League football alongside your boyhood hero !
Cricketphilly Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 Bought me a pint once. All it takes to become my hero!
Prince Jazzbo Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 He moaned at me once for swearing in the queue at the ABC Cinema when it was full and we couldn't get in. I made my feelings known and he turned round to everyone and said 'excuse his french'. Although he was just as unhappy as I was at not getting in. Can't remember the film though. I also saved a penalty from him in a kick about with him when he was an apprentice and he was playing for Saints Youth Team up at Stoneham lane.
The Majestic Channon Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 Steve williams was my idol as a lad along with channon and i was GUTTED when he left for arse, i will never forget his volley at elland road in the league cup semi 1st leg , he should have played foe england. I recently worked with one of the ex Norrköping players who was in the side when saints played them in the early 80's and he told me steve williams threw a chicken at some of their players after the game in the lounge in anger at only drawing

The Majestic Channon Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 Fowl behaviour if true! Anyway not as bad behaviour as 2 others?????? They were guilty though! actually my ex workmate told me the so called ' victim' was not all there and had tried the same thing a couple of times after the moran and wright episode with other players staying in hotels.

Leicestersaint Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 A truly great player for saints - and scored one of the best individual goals i have ever seen - against Norwich as i remember at the Milton end - beat about 9 players all by himself, several of them at least twice, before scoring!

In fact if he's nothing better to do on Boxing Day he might as well turn up at SMS with his boots.I'm sure he could still put Wotton,James and Hammond to shame.

Steve Williams was great and I was ****ed off when he left.
Ozkeith2 Posted 22 December, 2009 Posted 22 December, 2009 He's one of my all time faves. A real class act. He didn't score many in comparison to his England rivals (Robson, Hoddle), but I still think he could have done a job at international level in '82 or 86. (Bobby) Robson played him out of position against East Germany at Wembley. He missed a sitter early on & that was pretty much it for his England career. Does anyone remember the 25 yard volleyed goal against West Ham?

BGF Posted 22 December, 2009 Posted 22 December, 2009 Didnt SW make his debut after the semi final of the FA cup in 76' at skatesville then make his full debut against Fulham the following season. Fulham played with Rodney Marsh and George Best in the team, Best got sent off after a foul on SW I think. I can remember thinking what a player, we've never had anyone like this. I spoke to him a few years ago at a friends wedding, I asked him many questions the one that sticks in my memory is the one regarding him moving to Arsenal, I asked him why he moved as it destroyed his England career he just said they were his home team and it was always his ambition.

Yep, at Fratton Park, well Fratton Dark actually, they only could afford a couple of lamps per floodlight pylon, so I can remember struggling to see what was happening in the gloom. But SW brightened things up.
