ooohTerryHurlock Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Do they still exist and if so why not used in a few games to day....watching the FLS on BBC1 it looked like they could have come in handy in a few games!

A throwback from the 70's if ever there was. As kids we always had an orange ball with Wembley written on them and one kick against a brick wall and that was that, end of ball. Orange balls? More like to be Yellow and Purple or some other garish colour combination and probably designed by the the likes of our clever marketing friends in America and Germany under the pretence it helps players read the flight or some such sports 'science' rubbish.

Ahhh, the famous ol' 'Wembley Trophy' orange plastic football, was like heading a ball made of sandpaper...still with scars to prove it!
Toadhall Saint Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 I feel a trip down memory lane coming on! ;-)
ibizasaint Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Bayern Munich used an orange ball yesterday i think.
VectisSaint Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Bayern Munich used an orange ball yesterday i think. Probably one they stole from Wembley, bloody Germans, they should give it back
St Landrew Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Channel flicking the other evening, and I saw some obscure game going on from Norway, or somewhere, I don't know. The peculiar thing was the ball, which had a garish red and blue, and slighty sparkly finish to it [i think]. It also looked twice the size of a normal fooball. Anyway, it looked really odd against the snow. No, it wasn't beach volleyball, or extreme football, but a regular game for some Euro competition, that I don't have the slightest interest in, between two sides that I have the same indifference to.
Huffton Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Wasn't there a rule a couple of years ago about FL matches during the winter months using a yellow ball? Maybe it went out the wndow when teams started using balls in club colours.
macthesaint Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Was it an orange ball when Matty scored the hat trick v Liverpool at the Dell? I remember being at Bristol City in the snow when we won an orange ball match, courtesy of Mick Channon.
alehouseboys Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Jumpers for goalposts and all that lol. ...that's me about to stick it in the bottom corner...marvelous.......

Yeah thats right, but I think it was changed to the orange ball half way through the game when we where 4-0 up. After it was changed to the orange ball Liverpool got two back to make it 4-2. It was a good game though!
THEVMAN Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 ...that's me about to stick it in the bottom corner...marvelous....... I remeber you tucking it away that day that was me coming back from the shops, i`m the one on the path.
Simples Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Bloody cold (-9) where I am, got blue balls. Hope nobody kicks mine  Simples.
JackFrost Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 Fairly obvious answer Orange balls are still used in matches where snow is on the pitch or is falling, so it shows up on the TV. I remember when Chelsea played Tromso in Norway in the UEFA cup in the late 90s and there was a blizzard at half time. They had to play the second half on snow. How it wasn't abandoned I will never know
The9 Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 This is last season's "snow" ball (not in club colours) : And this is this season's : All of this season's Mitre FL balls have that net/sparkle/mesh type pattern on them, last season's didn't have that. There's only one snow/hi vis ball, they're not in club colours.
RonManager Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 ...that's me about to stick it in the bottom corner...marvelous....... You know, isn't it? Notice the lad farthest left, on the pavement, sporting a giant 'beehive afro' - as was the fashion at the time. Also, nice bit of buttressing at No.42 in the distance.

Maybe it went out the wndow when teams started using balls in club colours. Yes there was, and yes it did. It was this one : Which as you can see is the old pattern, replaced by the "Revolve" at the start of last season.
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 20 December, 2009 Author Posted 20 December, 2009 so why were n't more used yesterday?
Whitey Grandad Posted 20 December, 2009 Posted 20 December, 2009 so why were n't more used yesterday? I suspect that commercial reasons are the culprits. Isn't there an approved ball that must be used?
