hamster Posted 19 December, 2009 Posted 19 December, 2009 What Christmas song is your all time favourite? There are some standarsd out there but for me (and mrs hamster ftm) it was is and always will be this beautiful little ditty by Steeleye Span - Gaudete, enjoy: Part of my reasoning is it comes across as a proper religious hymnal song, quite spellbinding, whack the volume up to 11 and listen, really listen to it. PS I also like 'All around My Hat' fwiw.
TopGun Posted 19 December, 2009 Posted 19 December, 2009 Not Xmas songs specifically but just remember my parent's ABBA LP always being on.

PS I also like 'All around My Hat' fwiw. Thanks for that. It takes me back to the glory days of English folk-rock in the 70s. By the way, Maddy Prior did a lovely album of Christmas music with The Carnival Band in 1987, called Tapestry of Carols. It's a collection of ancient Christmas carols from around Europe. The Carnival Band play replicas of medieval period instruments. If you like traditional carols, and/or are sick of the slick, commercial Christmas stuff, check this out. Not quite classic Steeleye but very good nevertheless.
Atticus Finch of Maycomb Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upQYFzqE02U this is my favourite christmas song. It is acoustic, and is called 'Fit Again'
Deppo Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 That's a nasty stutter you've got there, young man.
Sheaf Saint Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 Asking what is my favourite christmas song is like asking what is my favourite sexually transmitted disease. If I absolutely had to choose one that I don't mind it would be The Pogues' Fairytal of New York. Can't bear the rest of them. It's not because I'm a grump who hates christmas, it's just that I am admittedlky a bit opf a music snob and they are invariably just cheesy crap.
Bath Saint Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 How about 'Christmas card from a hooker in Minneapolis' by Tom Waits? Here's a version with a sweet rendition of 'Silent Night' to get you all in the spirit that is Christmas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STXF9PZkjSQ

Imho their best song is 'Drink Down the Moon'.
hamster Posted 21 December, 2009 Author Posted 21 December, 2009 If you want something to drink hot toddys or whisky and ginger ale to then the Tull deliver every time with their unique style imo. Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yibz4xAejos
badgerx16 Posted 21 December, 2009 Posted 21 December, 2009 "All I Want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit" by Half man Half Biscuit, or most of the tracks on Phil Spector's "A Christmas Gift For You"

Incidently - a quick 'Google' has confirmed my suspicion that Waits did a version of 'When the Saints go Marching In' too.
