benjii Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 There will be more games like this one until AP sorts the squad out completely. Hopefully that will happen in January. Key issues are poor defence make-up and an unbalanced midfield. In short we need a RB, CB, CAM, LW, RW and a large mobile striker. Trouble is we also have OK players that are a bit of a luxury as they take up a squad place yet they not good enough or not suitable to do a basic job. I refer to James, Waigo, Wotton, Antonio, Thomas for example. Even Lallana is a bit of an enigma - is he a winger, central mid, striker? He is a great player but who do you sacrifice to allow him a place? For me this is significant issue for AP - what is his first choice midfield four/five? These two are patently good enough to play for virtually any League One club.
Whitey Grandad Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 All this discussion about our best midfield positions confirms to me that the balance is not right with the players that we have at present. I've seen very few games where we have totally bossed midfield. We have lots of good individual players who have got us some good results through moments of brilliance but we don't have a good team who play as a cohesive unit. Sometimes I think we make too many changes, but maybe AP is still trying to get a fell for his squad and what it can do. January should certainly be interesting.
S-Clarke Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 This Chris Lines rumour seems to be getting up speed - theres a thread on it on the B Rovers forum and also a couple of posts on 606 (i know, i know...) saying that we have made an official bid and offered him 5k a week. Can't really say i've seen too much of him....but he's been an ever present in central midfield for rovers this year (he's only 22 as well)
krissyboy31 Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 Defenders by the sounds of it. http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/4823050.Pardew_set_to_strengthen_defence_/

Getting up speed could just mean that one person made up the rumour and posted it on a forum. Another person saw that rumour and posted in somewhere else and then again until each of the places it is posted become used to back up each other.

Matthew Le God Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 was mentioned on here a few weeks back, we've been scouting him. Yep and that could have been the original made up rumour from where all the others have come from. It may be true but you may also have been taken in by what happens when one small rumour spreads out on the internet and backs itself up by being in many places.
scotty Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 I havent trawled through all the posts, did Cortese have anything interesting to say on the Solent interview?
Granadino Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 was mentioned on here a few weeks back, we've been scouting him. Indeed. Also been monitoring the Brighton Messageboard, and some people on there are convinced we will be signing Adam Virgo - he threw his shirt in to the crowd at the end of their game yesterday and waved goodbye to the fans, so seems certain to be on the move somewhere. Another player with a strong relagtionship with Wilkins by all accounts.

Primarily yes, though I think he has played all over the park. Having read more into the subject though, the latest opinions seem to be that Millwall or Norwich are more likely destinations, so this may be a bit of a non-starter!

I guess we'll be linked with alot of Wilkins old players though.
corsacar saint Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 Prefer Glen Murray if were to sign any Brighton player. Virgo has never been the same since he failed to make it at Celtic, pretty ordinary at best.
hamster Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 Chris Dickson is a half decent solid player and I think he is still a loanee at Bristol Rovers. hcdajfu
Tac-tics Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 Mr Whitbread is someone I'm keeping an eye on, would'nt surprise me if Pards made a cheeky offer.
Window Cleaner Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A61211459 In fact Lines has just turned 24

Charlie Wayman Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 After four successive dismal inept displays we'll need more than a couple of inspired signings in January to get anywhere in this league, we'll need a whole ****ing team bar two - Schneiderlin and Davies. Suddenly our emperor is wearing very translucent clothes. What can we expect in January? My guess is very little... It's beginning to have the feel of those not very lond ago days when we were supposed to be grateful during the January window that we hadn't actually had to sell any more of our players and had taken a mediocre loanee that nobody else wanted onto our permanent staff. Now it could be that no news is good news and AP has 4 aces up his sleeve and is keeping mumsie in case the Gooners or Spuds get the whisper and beat us to it.... Somehow, though one sense that Saints will be forever Saints and Woking's third choice right back will be the height of our ambition. Maybe Jason is about to make a big comeback? I'll pass on the swiss roll, if it's all the same to you.

Chez Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 After four successive dismal inept displays . below par or poor might be a better description - and I've seen all four before you ask. we'll need more than a couple of inspired signings in January to get anywhere in this league, we'll need a whole ****ing team bar two - Schneiderlin and Davies.. I'd add Lambert, Connelly, Jardi, Lambert and Lallana to those two. Suddenly our emperor is wearing very translucent clothes.. not sure why you say that seeing how we have turned the season round completely usingAPs signings. What can we expect in January? My guess is very little.... why do you say that. We spent a few bob on Lambert and Hammond, so I'd expect funds to be there if the right player comes available. Cheer up lad, its been a fun packed season so far. No reason why we can't improve further and make a chase for a play off spot.

Matthew Le God Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 Saints don't even have a player called Davies, so Charlie Wayman really has no idea!

Obviously overhauling our 10 point deficit, getting to the top half of our division, and within touch of a play-off place, when most people thought that survival this season would be considered a success this season, plus being close to a Wembley final isn`t enough for you. What would be?? Edited 29 December, 2009 by miserableoldgit
Gordon Mockles Posted 29 December, 2009 Posted 29 December, 2009 None. I would expect the business to be done in the last couple of days of the window. Teams will be holding out for silly money from Saints. I would be very surprised if we signed more than two players in the January window. WHY?! I think it's more than likely transfer targets have already been discussed, approved & identified. Cortese has stated his intentions & prudently embarked on his campaign to take the club forward & strengthening the squad is paramount to achieving progression & taking the club forwards!

JustMike Posted 30 December, 2009 Posted 30 December, 2009 Just spoken to my Rovers mate and had this to say re Chris Lines "Sometimes good, he can ghost past players. His passing is woeful at times though and can look uninterested. Likes his nights out on the town. With your money, you could get better (ie houlahan (spl) at Norwich)"

I do hope this post is a wind up, you were bored, couldn't think of anything to write so thought you would stir the pot a little.....cos if you really think this then, oh dear oh dear. Had you taken up your Arsenal option no doubt you would have called for that little Spanish midfielder to be dropped

Glasgow_Saint Posted 30 December, 2009 Posted 30 December, 2009 Why the hell are we being linked with crappy BR players when we have a Billionaire owner? Surely he/we should be looking to sign superstars....not Chris Lines (who?) I give up! Am I the only one with ambition?

Surely he/we should be looking to sign superstars....not Chris Lines (who?) I give up! Am I the only one with ambition? There is ambition and there is attracting the sort of players you and the rest of us want to the club whilst in League 1. Anyone from the Championship (or higher ? ) joining now will have to look and say to themselves "realistically this is 18 months in League 1 at least". Yes we could reach the play offs but even if we do that is a lottery so realisitcally we are looking to go up automatically next season. If a player hasn't got the intelligence to work that out his agent/advisors will and unless the wages are really good they wont come here, and why should NC/ML pay out top wages to players that wont set the world alight in the Championship ? Build a team to get out of League 1, build a team to get out of the Championship, build a team to stay in the Premiership.....and they have a 5 year plan to get us back there ? Don't see how that lacks ambition to be honest.

Realistically we need to be building a team for automatic promotion next season so I will be interested in the signings we make in January for this to happen It should be relatively easy to get to the CCC but getting to the Premiership is not going to be easy Edited 30 December, 2009 by John B

Saint-Reece Posted 30 December, 2009 Posted 30 December, 2009 I don't mind if we really did sign this Lines guy, i've heard good things and Charlie Wayman you seriously need to sort it out mate. All i can say is I hope Mr Liebherr will pull some dosh out of his pocket for The coming Month and if we can get some decent players (i.e RB, LM?(cover lallana) and maybe another ST to cover connolly) we will be in this league for no more than the end of 10-11 season if not this May (which i fully believe at least playoff's are possible with some good players coming in. COYR's! Onwards and Upwards and a Happy New Year.
