Yeah beckford would be highly unlikely but would be amazing. If we were buying from this league Simeon Jackson would be my shout as well. Lets say lambo was injured, does anyone really think we could rely on papa & connolly as a pair week in week out? (as good as they are) Now add Jackson to one of those two and we look much stronger. Would also not fancy either of those two up on their own as lone striker.

Yes pacey cb needed, solid rb and a dominent ball winning midfielder.

4 players needed IMO to turn us into the best team in L1 & competitive championship team. Simples

This should probably be put on a different thread but I couldn't be arsed to sift through and find it...

I was at a Christmas do last night where I met the wife of one of Saints' physios who told me that Liebherr has released "sizeable funds" for Pardew to strengthen the playing squad in January. Interesting times ahead methinks!

Goody!!! Happy Christmas everyone!

I guess most of the funds will be used to secure players on loan?

Depends what happens with Saga and only AP knows about Connolly - if Saga goes and Connolly is likely to be in and out of the team, a striker would be my no.1 priority.

If not, I think we need an attacking central midfielder especially in a 4-5-1. Notwithstanding all the goals, the triad of Schneiderlin, Hammond and Wotton hardly exudes attacking intent while Mellis is likely to return to Chelsea. At times, there's been too much space between our midfield and forwards which has forced the long ball.

Rather than a CB, I would go for a DM who could play at the back if necessary while lesseingn the reliance on Wotton, a pacy, younger Christian Dailly. But pace is important. If Gillett goes to Donnie, then a DM becomes more important.

A photocopy of Dan Harding at RB would be useful -its singularly our weakest spot in the team though I don't think it has much impact on our overall balance.

Finally cover for Lallana at LM wouldnt go amiss as Holmes or Mills have hardly figured in Pards plans. Been impressed with Jeff Hughes of Bristol Rover who seems capable of covering the whole left-hand side. Doing so would free Lallana go to a more central AM position (see above) which in my view is his natural position.

not heard that - has it been reported?

Good thing is Pardew hardly had any time last window and got us

Lambert, Harding, Hammond, Jaidi, Trottman, Connolly - so pretty confident he will do well for us

I'd expect us to do another ''marquee'' signing. if that's beckford, i don't know - but Simeon Jackson is the next best option IMO...

What on earth is a "marquee" signing? Is it one that is on-off, on-off right up to the last day leaving us all feeling very tents?

Posted
So i'd expect us to get a striker of a similar stature...patrick agyemang? he was interesting us in the summer and has been transfer listed at QPR.

He'd be great in this league. He's started today for them though. Think the transfer listing was due to a bust-up with Magilton, so I guess he's staying with them, for now.

A little more likely after his reaction to be substituted today?

Nope, Leeds would want a premium to sell to another League One club. Plus Beckford almost certainly has had enough of this division and has the prospect of an out-of-contract payday at the end of the season.

Posted
The way out of this league is too buy the other league one teams best players.

True, but there is also a great deal of mileage to be gained from adding to the mix with experienced pros from a higher division; Jaidi being a point in case. It's all about getting the blend of the team right.

I think the team can get by in most areas of the pitch, though of course we can always improve. But I'd definitely like to see us sign another striker; I believe Lambert hasn't missed a game for us yet, and our style is very much defined by playing through him. I think Beckford is an unrealistic target, but he's certainly the type of player we need to be looking at, somewhere in the middle of the attributes of Lambert and Connolly.

Absolutely right. It's nice to play the fantasy football "who should we sign" game but Pardew has previously pulled quite a few rabbits out of the hat with some top signings that not too many people predicted or suggested. It's a very nice feeling to have a manager in whom you can place so much trust.

Based on what I saw today, if he has designs on Premiership football he needs a serious reality check. He would do well to join a club like us or stay at Leeds, clubs with the potential to go places and who mask his weaknesses by placing a good team around him. To quote the steward I was chatting with he needs 5 chances before he even gets close to scoring one, in a higher league he would get found out quite severely.

For me we need a new RB as a priority. Either keep Trotters or get another CB. We need a left midfielder as Lallana would be better utilised up front. We also need another striker to complement AL, RL and DC. Someone with a bit of pace and height. Another Kenny if you will.

Not sure about CM. Wotton, Schneiderlin, Mellis, Hammond and James have that reasonably well covered, although I wouldn't rely on James or Wotton as long term solutions.

What about Carl Baker at Stockport? Been attracting interest from a few championship clubs and has 9 goals from midfield this season in an awful team. I think we could do with an AMC type of player - and that's what he is.

With stockpot possibly about to fold, he could be worth a punt.

We have Mellis who's a decent attacking midfielder and can't get a look in. What we need is a central midfielder who can play as part of a 4-4-2 and get in the box and chip in with a few goals and not unbalance the side.

I don't think a midfield two of Hammond and Mellis or Schneiderlin and Mellis would work. Some sort of goal scoring midfielder would be nice but we have more pressing issues imo.

If that's the case then he wouldn't be worth buying until the summer, unless he reaches a point at Leeds where they'd take less to get him off the books.

However 'needs 5 chances before he even gets close to scoring one' criticism could also used to describe Andrew Cole and he did okay in the higher levels of the game!

Agree with above i'm not Waigo's biggest fan thought he looked class Tues but didn't seem up for it today at all. Definitely need a back up Striker and a Right Back possibly that McNaughton from Cardiff always looked class Vs us and doesn't seem to be getting a game for them of late. Does look over 40 tho

Antonio permanent deal

RB

Pacey CB to help Jaidi

Striker- Simeon Jackson or Lee Barnard

If we are lucky maybe even another CM so we have good quality in there for backup

Posted

There is Latvian former Watford player Aleksandrs Cauna, who scored against us last season. He is eager to move from Skonto. He is young (21) versatile winger playing regularly for National side scoring goals. Tracked by Strasbourg and Spartak Moscow.

Apart from there is other U-21 player Artjoms Rudņevs who is available from Hungarian side Zalaegerszegi TE for 250-300 thousands EUR. Banging goals there for fun. 12 goals in 12 games.

Would be great additions for Saints now and for the future as well, plus for reasonable money.

Hey. Alan!!!!!! Are u watching this thread???

I have said many a time before,

We need;

A decent RB

A Pacey CB, or a very competent CCC level one.

A CM, (i think James given time could be a very good DM) Mellis is not right for this league, rid of wotton.

Simeon Jackson, or basically something different to the hoof ball to Lambert that fails every so often.

Break the bank for Lee Carsley or Robbie Savage IMO

Carsley maybe, but Savage is a dirty little b*stard, who always seems to con the ref and convince him that he has been fouled, rather than the one who has committed the foul and he's always trying to get people sent off. I wouldn't want him at Saints under any circumstances.

I would like to see us go after Lisbie, he has pace and strength and would compliment Lambert and or Connolly perfectly.

Would also like to see us go for David Norris from Ipswich, the goal scoring midfieilder which people are saying that we could do with.

"Marquee" signing. How I've come to admire lazy b****** journalists. Somebody plucks a word out their a*** and all the lemmings follow. It seems that in addition to large tents, a canvas awning in front of a doorway is also a marquee. Well according to the "Seppos" ,(Australian for septic tanks = Yanks). So the welcome someone receives from a canvas cover hung with lights and baubles now becomes a "Marquee" signing. Tenuous at best I would have thought, but who can fathom the press?

Sorry to have ranted about that, when one gets old and grumpy, all manner of things p*** one off and I've been waiting to get that off my chest for some time.

Andy Todd is our local Perth Glory F.C."marquee" signing, so you can get an idea how much

it's used out here.

Thank you for your time in this matter.

Apart from that, how glad I am to see Saints going so well. Hopefully only a minor hiccup

against Leeds.

Merry Christmas to all.

Antonio permanent deal

Problem with Antonio in the last few games I have seen is that either he, or the rest of the team, have forgotten his strength. Deliver the ball in front of him so he can use his pace to skin the full back or centre half.

At the moment he is trying to play too much football, is trying to beat his man with skill rather than pace, and at present he isn't quite good enough for that. It will come, he is only 19, but his major asset and the thing that frightens the opposition is his electric pace.

IMHO he should go back to concentrating on that, especially when he comes on as a sub for the last 20 odd mins when they are flagging anyway.

For me, I would have him over Papa on the wing. He looks very dangerous and long throws are a great asset for Lambert in the box. I also believe he helps out the RB alot more defensively.

I agree he looks dangerous, helps the full back more and about his long throws being a bonus but I do believe that recently we haven't seen him run directly at the opposition as much as when he came into the team originally......and he needs to do that cos the potential is certainly there.

Papa is smarter, more skillful and better defensively than Antonio. I'm surprised that someone could say that Antonio helps out more defensively than Papa, to be honest.

I just think Antonio has been more effective than Papa that's all. I like his pace.

Defensively??? obviously you werent there yesterday. I think Antonio is a more direct and powerful player than Papa which perhaps work better in this league. But Papa is a more skillful team player who can make the step up -both in terms of league and working with better team mates around him.

Papa Waigo was almost playing as a wing back yesterday, he was doing so much work and running for Thomas.

Yes, using Papa like that was quite inspired, limited Leeds on their dangerous left hand side, they still made chances from there, but Papa made many crucial challenges.

I was there actually and to be fair to papa, yesterday he did well helping Thomas out but I think Antonio can do an equally as good job and looks great going forward. What do people think, sign him up or will it be a case of extending the loan till the end of the season (it runs until Jan at the moment doesn't it)?

Of couse, not hard to understand given snodgrass was playing on the left -and every Leeds supporter I spoke to- rates him as far and away as their best player.

Also interesting how many Leeds supporters think Beckford has gone off the boil this season and would be happy to offload him - word is that Newcastle might go for him.

Maybe its just a proud, c**tish Leeds thing but their delusions of grandeur still stagger. One Leeds fan told me before the game "with all due respect, we expect to hammer teams like you" while at the end of the game, fans were chanting "1 nil in your cup final". With big markus at the helm instead of that miserable bast**d bates, we'll see who has the last laugh.

Beckford is a real possibility

Only if we offer silly money in January. It would be the biggest statement of intent we could possibly make, though!

Wouldn't suprise me to see Leeds look at signing Jackson as a straight replacement for him.

ITK?

As i said in my earlier post, Leeds fans reckon he is going to Newcastle. While I would have dismissed it before yesterday, I got the sense even before Beckford's sulk and strop, the door is much more open for a cheeky offer.
