You will be pleased to know that this is all a figment of your imagination

The BBC forecast is for Grey skies and sleet for North Hampshire

So you're all making it up just like the Hurricane

BBC Weather what do they know!:smt072

Looked on there to see what the weather was supposed to be like tonight and it told me that Bracknell was Grey skies at 3pm. The snow was just starting to cause problems at this point

My boyfriend has not got any further that just outside Bracknell. He is now in a pub waiting for things to improve.

The wife left Reading at 2:30 and is still trying to get through Basingstoke, how the **** can a few inches of snow cause so much trouble. Why don't the councils ever plan for these things properly.

There's a lot of rain coming up from the southwest which is turning to snow over the higher ground around Salisbury - Andover - Basingstoke. Southampton's fine at the moment :)

Well truth is, many people in Southern England don't know how to drive in snowy/sleety conditions, and who could blame them. They get little opportunity to practice. However, many people don't take the opportunity to read up, and put into practice the reams of information and advice that can be had for driving in such conditions. Hence, they get stuck, or hit things, get hit because they put themselves in the way, or several other combinations of screw-up. And some of them shouldn't be on the bloody road whether or not the conditions are dodgy.

This afternoon in Southampton, while it was snowing, I saw car drivers screwing up all over the show. I saw ABS brakes chomping at the snowy tarmac. I was driving my crappy old Fiat with the heater de-misting away. A few cars in front of me was a motorcyclist, riding a powerful V-Twin motorcycle. If he made any error, he was likely to be off his bike. All the car drivers around him screwed up. They didn't allow for him at all, but he managed. He rode excellently in the slick conditions, and I take my hat off to him.

Fact is, there is no nannying on a bike. Your safety is entirely up to you. That's why that bloke made not the slightest error. Actually, I think he was an idiot for riding in such conditions, with mobile deathtraps surrounding him. ;)

Just got back from what was supposed to be a business trip to Cologne. All German airports seemed to shut down with an horrendous snow storm, and we landed at Paderborn, which is god knows where up in the hills.

The tiny airport was crowded with jets that were supposed to have landed at Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Cologne. And I thought that was it: I'm going to spend a week in a half-lit airport lounge living off Turkish coffee and apple pies. There were no taxis leaving the town, and the buses weren't taking the risk. The hotels were full. Things got worse when the roads into town were blocked by accidents. But within two hours, Paderborn airport reopened - the slowploughs running up and down the runway continuously. We took off into a blizzard and landed in one - after an aborted attempt.

I missed my meeting but made it to Cologne - and I was only about four hours late getting into the city. The Germans just made it work. When I got to Cologne, the taxi driver told me it had snowed only twice in eleven years, so snowstorms are not something they're used to. Yet they made things work without any real fuss - just got on with the job of solving an inconvenient problem.

Yet it is not uncommon in England and I was on the coach from London to Southampton for 6 hours earlier!

Congratulations, your gift is some genuine Christmas spirit...

Maidstone is completely covered in a thick layer of ice this morning, thank God for my Kentish traits of (a) hardiness and (b) excellent balance 8)

I stacked it on the way home from the station tonight :smt011 bugger, thought I was going to get through the whole cold snap without falling on my arse once. In my defence, I had had a drop of beer after football lol.

Sout-east London go hit badly last night. We were in town visiting my brother and driving home was not pleasant. There seemed to be no awareness on a council level of what was coming - no gritters out, nothing. And to add to what somebody posted earlier, the major problem is idiots driving badly. They drive poorly in normal conditions and the snow seems to exacerbate their lack of ability; they get worse! Coming up Maze Hill there was some guy in a big old Beemer revving his engine to **** and wondering why he was gradually sliding down the hill towards me. I kept my distance, kept the revs as low as I could and was able to calmly move out of the way to let him (un)gracefully slide past me. There is a God.... :-)

On the plus side, the temperatures are set to rise over the next few days - up to 8/10 degrees on Boxing Day down in Hampshire - so I think the problems will ease, even if the lack of driving ability doesn't improve...

Oh tell me about it, too many morons driving.

In February when we had the big snow fall, you could barley drive down my road...was like an ice rink, i was taking it steady as you do...so some stupid prat comes right up behind me, toots me then speeds up and overtakes me...only to then skid onto the pavement.

seriously, what on earth are some people on? impatient bastards.

For the benefit of those of us overseas, please attach some pics of the snow in and around God's country.

Can't beat a bit of nostalgia during this time of year - plus I am getting ****ed off with hearing "Happy Holidays" and all the other BS.

Honda have wheeled out their old Christmas advertising slogan again - 'Happy Hondadays'! :(

It's just remined me why next year we will be spending Christmas back in Southampton!!

Hope Eric's enjoying his skiing holiday in Lancashire

After the 4th day of having to scrape snow and ice off the car windscreen and windows the novelty is wearing off  But sat in doors in the warmth with a bottle of Old Speckled Hen, looking out into the garden is nice :D

Our Cul de Sac is still looking very Christmassy although the snowman collapsed overnight and is now just pile a messy of snow with twigs hanging out of it :(

I see rain is forecast in Dubai for 25th ... you may have to cancel the bar b que :p

Not looking forward to the slushy meelting days coming up, shame it probably won't last till Xmas Day.

Yay, basingstoke made headline news because so many people just abandoned their cars. 6 inches of snow here :)

Ah, must be the first time ever that Basingstoke has had something in common with the car park at Dubai Airport.......

Although I doubt they leave the keys in over there

Probably not too many Cortinas and Allegros in Dubai...

And, to be fair, not many of those here will be found sitting up on house bricks :D

Hell, I loved my Cortina with it's rear spoiler & almost Starsky & Hutch stripe... those were the days. Heck, I even had an Allaggro.... Worrying.

Anybody been affected by the ice this morning? Sounds pretty bad on the motorway from what I've heard.

I had two accidents in the space of five minutes :mad::mad:

Both times cars sliding into me.:mad:

Should have bought shares in a car body shop:mad::mad::mad:

As you can tell, I am a little bit irritated

was pretty icy and pretty slippy, but you get on with it. Yeah the traffic was bad and it took me 1hr30 to travel the 6 miles to work, but im here, as are a lot of other people. drive slowly and carefully and plot your route. They have worse conditions up north and in Scotland every year and they dont grind to a halt.

Would help if the local councils had the 'grit' bins around. Everyone tried, and failed, to get out of the road this morning. It really was a like an ice rink. And we're on a slight slope.

I'm working from home, Millbrook flyover was closed westbound and the traffic on Millbrook Road out of town is solid. Buses aren't running, ice all around my roads (Shirley)... all a bit of a nightmare really!

Minty me ol china, could you pop down to the airport with your magic mop and get the runway and taxiways and apron re-opened ;)

My son is supposed to be on the 2005 to Manchester tonight and bugger all seems to have moved today so far :( Wouldn't have happened in your day

I heard on Radio 2 news on the way home last night that there was going to be a huge national shortage of sprouts this christmas due to the crops freezing over in the cold snap or something.

Lucky for me I can't stand the damn things :o

I was in the Black Forest last February, snow everywhere. They all change to snow tyres for the winter and they have two sets of wheels. Snow tyres are fantastic. I was in Canada once and my friend came flying into the car park, screeched to a halt, got out and went arse over tip on the sheet ice. He had snow tyres.

Drove up to the hole in the wall in RAK - how funny that was driving through the Desert singing along to Merry Christmas Everyone by Slade after reading this thread and then hearing the news about the European Transport "collapse" - surreal. (a baking hot 28C today BTW)

Anyway my lad now has 6 bottles of Vodka for his New Year's Eve party while we're away and they cost exactly 10 quid for the lot.

Result - not only saved me a fortune, but that stuff should put him off booze for life. Kremlin Vodka, made in Dehli. Bless
