We were trying to sign him in the summer, from what I (and a few others) were told. We may well go back for him.

"He's different, and they (Beckford and Lambert) would actually make a great pair. He's a real handful in behind the defence and if you give him space, then he will expose you, so we will try to limit the space that he operates in, but that's easier said than done.

"He's just a very, very good player and it's good for Leeds which is a club that's always been big for names, but they've managed to get one from within so to speak, so power to them"

Interesting comment...!

"because when we went down we lost some of our better players"

I'm turning into a big fan of Pardew, but I'm not sure of this comment (which he has said before); who does he mean? Surman? Yes, probably. Dyer? BWP? Rasiak?

Personally I feel he could big himself up more and say that the team we have now is stronger, more reliable, grittier and much more suited to the challenges we face. Really, of the players we lost, is anyone regretting the loss of those gone?

The whole article is a good read. It prepares the way very nicely.

One of the best articles Ive ever read from a Saints manager,....of course it heps when youre thinking what he is saying, but for me is spot on.

He certainly means Surman and probably means McGoldrick as well. Personally, not too bothered about any of the players that left (with the exception of Drew), because the replacements have generally been better than what we had before.

Apart from Beckford having a longer career in front of him, I wouldn't swop him for Connolly. We will score at Leeds, so its really down to the defence as to how good a result we get.

This Saturdays game is massive and AP is doing the right thing by turning up the pressure on Leeds in his article. When he talks about "losing SOME of the best players" I am sure he means out of the ones in the squad THEN...not from the ones he has now as generally the squad is better. FWIW I am not sure we will win this weekend - it will be part of the learning curve for the team and one more short hiccup before a renewed surge starting with Exeter on the 26th. We might be lucky and steal a draw, but there's a reason Leeds are top of the league, so don't be surprised if they win.

Personally I think he's saying just the right thing. He points out that Leeds have been here a while whereas we are just beginning our recovery. He says we lost some of our BETTER players, not our BEST - players like Surman and Dyer and MacGoldrick would have been very useful I think, especially under a more talented manager and alongside more skilled teammates. He rightly says that the current team had to be built afresh but is exceeding his expectations. He is painting us as plucky (and talented) underdogs. Leeds by contrast are expected to win and anything less would be a failure.

Good article IMHO.

Pardew's doing exactly the right thing in playing bigging up Leeds and playing down our chances. We can now really go there and 'let our hair down' as he said. And when we let our hair down and play in a relaxed style, we're good. You only have to look at the Walsall game to see that.

Leeds is a test of the 'new southampton' If we can go to a strong team in cold and wintery conditions with a baying crowd on their backs and get a positive result, then I will believe it.

Sadly I expect a 2-0 defeat

A good read and a good article by AP. Agree he always talks so much sense. Interesting to note too, that Bartman is the only survivor from the team the last time we played them nearly 3 years ago. Guthrie and Belmadi were in the team then.

Totally agree:

Totally different to the lacklustre weasel words of Burley for instance - Pards is positive, focussed and seemingly a great motivator!

Great Stuff !

Agree, not only is he getting the team in the right mindset of late, but he is whipping us fans up along the way. Its like we are being included in the team talk.

I like this line;

But, the players' commitment to what we're wanting to do can't be faulted, they've been absolutely brilliant and I think our fans know that when the players put on the stripes of Southampton, they're seeing a committed performance from people who are going to perform to the best of their ability, which is what we'll do at Leeds.

We have not seen enough players playing for the stripes in recent years, we all know those are the players we want to see.
