Thedelldays Posted 16 December, 2009 Share Posted 16 December, 2009 Population density is key. Hampshire has a similar population to Devon and Cornwall combined, but all within an hours drive of St Mary's. But saint's 'catchment' incorporates much of Dorset, and I'd guess parts of Wiltshire, Sussex and Surrey. Once you factor in the population density, Southampton is far more likely to have large attendances than Plymouth. but there are also other attractive alternatives for fair weather fans to go to...where as in plymouth, they have torquay, exeter and yeovil
The Kraken Posted 17 December, 2009 Share Posted 17 December, 2009 I'm not at all convinced that Plymouth would get anywhere near to capacity in the PL; all these "plastic" fans have gotten by without Premiership football for a very, very long time so I can't see why 35,000 extra would suddenly start following just because they're in one higher division. That said, you have to give credit to Plymouth as a whole for getting their arses in gear and achieving a successful bid. Something that was well beyond our own turgid rabble of civil servants. It's very much to the detriment of this city and beyond that we didn't come close to entering a bid ourselves.
Neil Posted 17 December, 2009 Share Posted 17 December, 2009 Plymouth have a big catchment area, but most of it is water! I've always thought that their potential was vastly over-rated, but if it gives their fans something to cling onto then fair enough! At least they've shown some ambition. I think Saints & Pompey have probably helped Bristol & Plymouth by not bidding or screwing up, if Saints or Pompey had been involved I guess it may have been two from Bristol, Plymouth & Saints/Pompey, despite the claims that geography was not a big factor in the decision.
