Crab Lungs Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 I'd recently had a conversation with a friend regarding those moments, as a fan, that are simply irreplaceable. The moments of pure ecstasy (or agony, if you're a masochist) we endure as football fans. THAT feeling you get (or got, especially when we were at The Dell) for an evening game... the smell of the putrid fast food, the icy air or perhaps the smell of the grass. For you, what memories (good and bad) do you remember the most? And of course, what are your favourite recurring feelings attending and watching football matches? I'll kick things off: Fondest memory in recent history - The Derby playoff final, away when Rasiak slammed home the winner (or equaliser on aggregate.) Tumbling over bodies, people you don't even know hugging and embracing, screaming at the Derby fans and giving them the obligatory (and deserved) ****** gestures. Worst memory in recent history - Any of the humblings from last year with a team full of youngsters blessed with technique but not the necessary guidance to succeed in a tough league, capitulate. Recurring Feelings - Like above; the icy air and the whole 'pre-match' routine (that said, the pre-match routine differs from person-to-person.) Conversely, some of the balmier, early fixtures at the end of Summer too. The smell, the sounds, the familiar sights... Gah, you can probably tell I'm looking forward to coming home this Xmas and watching the Saints at home for the first time in ages, freezing my arse off and paying out of pocket for refreshments in a packed, shivering concourse)
Saint_clark Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 On the pitch V Sheffield United. I was emotionally drained all summer long and I swear to god the events of that day changed me as a person. Worst i've felt was last season, he Notts Forest game. Lost 2-0 and I felt like crying. And the recurring feeling for me is walking over the train bridge, and coming round the corner to see St Marys. I'm always filled with optimism, no matter who the opposition, whenever I walk over that bridge.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Great thread.. My fondest memory probably has to be when we beat West Ham 2-0 in 2002... It was back when I didn't go to many games and I went with my Dad, who is a West Ham fan. It was an evening game and the sight of St. Mary's all lit up will stay with me forever. We won through Kevin Davies' tap in and a great free kick from Fernandes and it was a record attendance back then of about 31,800-ish. Needless to say I bragged all the way home (well, until I fell asleep in the car, I was only 11). Great times. Worst memory was being there as we got relegated after the crap that was last season. Recurring feelings, same as you, pre-match routine, having a laugh home and away with my mates and just loving watching my team. Ahhhhhhhhhhh

That goal made a complete mockery of Burley's decision to leave him out the side. Pure class. The one I will always remember is MLT's audacious 45 yard lob against Blackburn in 94' was it? I was at that game with a mate of mine and during the celebrations he threw his arms in the air. Unfortunately in the excitement he forgot which side of him I was standing on and he ended up hugging the attractive wife of this bloke who must have been 6" 8" at least. Fortunately he saw the funny side of it. MLT's shot against Massimo Taibi always makes me laugh to this day also. The Arsenal and saints teams walking out for the FA cup final. Also the day Branfoot left. As for worst I will forever remember that long term feeling of dread when WGS drove out of the training ground in his car for the last time Edited 16 December, 2009 by JackFrost

If I remember rightly we ended up underneath about 10 people when Rasia slammed the ball home. Was a night of pure emotion. Didn't Skacel go through after Rasiak had scored but was on his tight foot and he blazed it wide?? I remember at 1 point we'd have both taken penalties going in to extra time Still to this day can only watch highlights up to Rasiaks equaliser!
View From The Top Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 3 for me. MLT v Arsenal. The sheer mentalness of it all, that my/our hero had cracked in a beauty in the last ever league game at The Dell. MLT's 45yarder away at Blackburn. Corky Morris and I looked at each other in stunned silence at the sheer quality of it before going nuts. From The Darwin end you had a great view of the swerve of the ball, which you don't really get on the TV. Man City away. Corky and I were sat in with the city fans as guest of a mate of his at Eastlands and as the ball was crossed in from the left we were out of out seats in tandem, both nodding an imaginary ball into the net, just as BT did the same.

Yes mate, this thread was with reference to you and our conversation! I think it may have been just after that Skacel missed.. Oh, what could have been The highlights... the commentator saying "It just had to be him!" as Rasiak slides along the turf... brilliant... the only time I'd ever joined in with the rather mundane 'Yellows!' chant... Thedelldays Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 my moment was MLT scoring the second wonder goal at the dell V newcastle... I ended up about 10 yards further down the Milton End...lol

Crab Lungs Posted 16 December, 2009 Author Posted 16 December, 2009 Not necessarily related to being at a football match, but I remember scouring teams message boards for hours before ther Derby away game and seeing that practically the whole country wanted us to beat them after their kick-anything-that-moves tactics of the first leg....
Whitey Grandad Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 BT's goal at dellhurst park is a special memory.

And to think we were 3-1 down on Agg after 2mins of that game. I always forget Chris Makin played as well. I always wonder how we'd have done if we had got promoted. Remember everyone was behind us, my mate who supports Cardiff text me when Rasiak scored 'if only you could see Billy Davies face now' lol. Anyone got a link to a video of highlights would like to see them again. Bloody Derby fans invading the pitch at the end, have never seen a more arrogant lot in my life
Wes Tender Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 MLT's last Dell goal against the Arse for me too, together with the 3-1 win against Newcastle after Flash, Shipperley and Heaney (I thought Le tiss, but apparently Heaney) scored in March 1995. There were about 3 minutes of the 90 remaining and we trailed 1-0 to newcastle who were pretty near the top of the Premiership, whereas we were close to our customary foot of the table position. Many had already left having consoled themselves that it was no disgrace losing narrowly to them when we scored three times and left Newcastle stunned. Naturally, I would also have to include the four years that ManUre gained just one point out of 12 against us, the 2-2, 6-3, 3-1 and 1-0 years at the Dell.
Crab Lungs Posted 16 December, 2009 Author Posted 16 December, 2009 I was just looking for the Derby game online! Has anyone still got it? I think I remember texting about 20 people a profanity laden 'Get In!' message on every goal that night, not to mention all the ones I received during game... Amazing night, shame it ended so badly but thats what this thread is about, the emotions, the feelings you get. It was definitely charged that night... As for the Derby inbreds.... they are from the same school of delusions of grandeur as Charlton and Pompey fans. It was hardly an isolated case of complete buffoonery - they were complete dickheads when they came down to SMS on both ocassions..

Never mind the penalty shoot out and what happened next, when Rasiak scored I went completely mental. I will never forget how great that felt, looking forward to a few more moments like that over the next few seasons. Another moment I won't forget was at Watford away last season. It was the first match I went to post-admin and midway through the second half a chorus of Oh When The Saints piped up (the proper, slow version) and I got very, very emotional :smt022
Thedelldays Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 why oh why did leon best not head it away....
Cheeky Monkey Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 When i bored I think about the Tin man and his gaol against arsenal. He could have been a great player for the saints in another dimension. When I am really bored I like to remember Jason Dod scoring from a corner against pompey... But, When I am super bored I like to remember Riise own goal when we beat liverpool in january 2002. He had a habit of scoring own goals!!! ( as per chelsea).......at this point I start thinking - "who has scored the most own goals in top flight history". Would benali be in there?
Appy Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 The 6-0 at wolves. Just remembering how i turned up to the game, knowing the likes of Jones, Rasiak, Baird and Bale were all out and somehow, without dominating the game, but with some incredible finishing, won 6-0.
SFKA South Woodford Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 The three recent home wins over the skates stand out for me, they make the hurt of the 4-1 at their sh*tehole a little more bearable. I remember the pride I felt on leaving the Travel Inn on Northam road in 2003 and walking over Northam Bridge to see the Northam car park chock full of coaches and people waiting to board them, all dressed in yellow and blue, and looking back and seeing the length of the convoy of coaches as we were driving out of Le gods country, and all of the cars and mini busses full of Saints fans and with their horns beeping as we made our way towards cardiff, then finally that which I felt on seeing half the millenium stadium a mass of blue and yellow, and at the final whistle and the minutes afterwards, when we showed the world that even though our team of players had lost, we the fans had won for our actions and support of our team.
Golden Balls Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 So many times I like to think back to when I need reminding why I love Saints.... THAT Derby goal in the play offs!! - All I remember is the ball falling to his feet and I knew it was a goal. Got bundled forward and was celebrating right where he slid! Never have I ever ever hugged so many people, let alone strangers! The fact we lost on pens does not even put the slightest downer on that memory!! Camera V Norwich - I remember turning to my old man and saying 'I'd do anything for a goal right now' and then suddenly the whole ground rose to its feet and roared. 10 seconds later we scored and to this day, I have never heard a bigger cheer! I feel I will look back at last night a few times in the future Everton last game of the season in 1999. Pahars saves us to complete the Great Escape! I remember walking to the ground and as I was crossing Archers Road I nearly got knocked over as I was literally praying for us to win and didn’t look when I crossed. Then at the end of the game 'What a beautiful day' by The Levellers came on and everyone was singing along. Obviously the last league game at The Dell One of the biggest memories however though is being 3-0 down to the mighty Liverpool with 17 mins to play. We all know the rest...once we got one back, I knew, (along with the rest of The Dell) we were going to get something from the game. That last 17 minutes The Dell really did act as the 12th, 13th and even 14th man. From the Archers we were literally pulling the ball into the net and when little Marian popped up and sent The Dell mental....5-6 mins of mad celebration followed. To me, that epitomised what The Dell was about!
70's Mike Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 SO many Penalty in the semi final in 76, and the realisation i was going to watch my team in a Cup final Le Tiss against the Arse Pahars second goal against Everton to avoid relegation As a 12 year old the roar that greeted Paines goal against Charlton in the promotion season Lawrie Mac leading the team onto the pitch against Notts County after the rape allegations The high i was on in 84 after Moran slotted home in front of 36000 at Fratton One i try to forget is that bl**dy song as we were locked in at Fratton in the relegation season. Watching Saints has been a huge part of my life, ups and downs
Redondo Saint Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Beating West Ham away about 10 years ago and then on the **** in Leicester Square before getting the mail train to Eastleigh! All of us in our late 30's/early 40's. Bloody marvellous!

macthesaint Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Matty's free kick at West Ham in 3-3 draw under Bally. I was going through a really bad spell in my life and that goal was a huge lift and also put us on the way to safety.I was sat with some West Ham mates in their stand but still jumped up along with our 4000 fans.'He scores some ****in good goals'. Any of our goals against skates, manure,Liverpool, arsenal, spurs.Camara of course! Brett's Villa park header. Worst memories...Watford 7-1 and other cup humiliations.Semi Final defeats, last season. I sincerely think we will have some great memorable moments coming soon!
SparkySaint Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Strangest Moment - Watching SSN from a hospital bed in Salisbury after breaking both of my legs in a car crash. I was buzzing off Morphine so the screen was a bit of a mush, and small, but I knew what was going on...... well sort of. I had so little energy I don't think i celebrated at all but my memory of those few days is limited My brother came down from Scotland so he took my season ticket and went with my dad. Best Moment - Wolves away 2007. I don't have to explain that one, we all know what happened Worst Moment - Sheffield Wednesday 2008. Had to drive back to Dorset after watching a inept Saints side completely fall apart. Punched my head unit so had no music all the way home Most precious moment - Watching Saints beat Ipswich 3-1 and seeing Chris Marsden score his greatest goal and Brett get his first for Saints. Good day
lambertsrightleg Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 even viafara's second goal against derby stands out for me. talk about going mental. other than that: dellhurst park and beatties goal beatties goal against man u pahars screamer against the skates crouchie's penalty against the skates!! the relief and emotion when the final whistle went against sheff utd watford away and saejis free kick but above all.....rasiak's equaliser at derby
It's There Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Best moments- coming back from 3 : 1 down against Ipswich in early 80s. Saints 3 Ars 2 when Tin Man scored. Worst Jan 08 losing 3 0 to Watford- no idea - players playing in wrong positions Special moments: In a bath listening to commerntry in the early 80s when Moran scored the winner v Pompy in the FA cup, with very little time left. Also, At a petrol station when Saints were playing Newcastle, in the 1990s and equalised with 3 mins remaining. As the commentator was bringing national radio up to speed the crowd erupted, the line went crackly and he mentioned Saints were 2 up...and within another minute Watson, I think, had scored the 3rd. I was a happy driver that evening!

CB Saint Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Well the 6 - 3 against Man U certainly was responsible for worst of the most catastrophic hangovers I have ever had. But the best moment was winning at Villa Park in the FA cup knowing that the next stop was Wembly. The build up to the final including the journey up to cardiff was pretty special too.
Kingsland Red Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Of course Pahers v Everton, Camara v Norwich and MLT v Arsenal. Also having to avoid the low level beams in the top corridor above the changing rooms when buying some half time sustinence and the general chaos in that area with people going in all directions.
Saint137 Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 Liverpool 3-3 @ The Dell The Wolves cup 1/4 final, was just a great atmosphere of togetherness, similar to last night Beating Liverpool @ Anfield in 96/97 Abide with Me @ Cardiff, and being so proud of my team at the end Dellhurst Matty against Arsenal (complete blank of the last few minutes and then on the pitch) Getting completely hammered on the last game of the season when Man U won the title against Boro, was that when we stayed up on GD over Man City? 95 or 96. Was in a pub in Nottingham and remember absolutely nothing, ended up checking teletext at 4am to confirm we'd stayed up. One of those being a Saint on foreign territory moments.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 Oh, walking up Leyton high street with a load of Saints fans who I didn't know, shouting Saints songs as the majority of the locals turned and watched us carry on up the street singing our songs. Brilliant away day.
saint_stevo Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 v Derby Play Offs home leg. Surman curling one home from 25yards, and turning and giving the moron Derby fans abuse Thomas scoring the wining Penalty in the L1 play-offs having come from behind twice and surviving extra time with 9 men
SaintsAddict Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 Lallana's goal to put us 1 up away at West Brom a few days before the Sheff Utd game is one that I won't forget in a while. Apart from that, Derby away in the playoffs, and the final in 2003 were very special days. Loving this thread, bringing back so many great memories.
edprice1984 Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 Rasiak v Derby: The single greatest moment in football (including England etc) I was in a pub in Swansea with 20 other Saints Fans (God knows where they came from...) The look on the lone Derby fans face as we all jumped around like loons was priceless. I thought he was going to cry. He was a true gent at the end, left quietly after shaking all of our hands! Le Tiss v Villa in 94/95 I think. Last minute from about 40 yards out! It was my first league away game, sat in the Villa end got us a 1-1 draw. Brett's goal against Watford in the Semi! I scared the neighbours with my screams... Outside of Saints: Michael Owen v Brazil WC QF, 2002 - I had a Biology A level exam after the game, went to the pub down from my school and ended up hugging randoms and kissing a very large woman who just happened to be walking her dog outside. Frank Lampard v Portugal, equaliser in Extra time.
Thedelldays Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 owen v argentina was pretty special as was sol campbells goal that never was in the same game.. I was in HotShots watching the game and people were still celebrating for (it seemed) ages until they realised the ref ruled it out..
Bucks Saint Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 Surprised this has not come up but then not that many were there: Norwich away, April 94. Saints were dead and buried that season, had already lost 19 games by January when Bally took over. We went into the Easter weekend losing a "must win" game at home. I went to Norwich convinced that we were down. Le Tiss scored a hat-trick. Terrible defending from both teams. We were 3-1 down, got back to 3-3 and they immediately went up the other end to go 4-3 up. But Ken Monkou scored from a corner, in front of our fans, in injury time to win it 5-4. The only time in the whole match we were in front. Our crowd celebrated like we were possessed. I remember how one of our players grabbed the ball and threw into our crowd to waste a few more seconds just to make sure. Mad mad mad day but never to be forgotten. Went on to stay up, of course!
theyin Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 Looking at the snow outside reminds me of Feb 14th 94??? MLT's volley from the edge of the box as a blizzard suddenly appeared. I think we won 4-1. The gf of the time wasn't best pleased as I was supposed to be at a Valentines ball with her. Needless to say, that relationship went to the wall
St Michael Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 All of the above (especially the Derby play-off, Brett's header at Villa Park - I was sat in the press box and cried, Millennium Stadium - cried again, all the MLT moments etc), but here's one from left field that i always think back to and it sends shivers up my spine. It was a nothing end of season away game at Newcastle in the early 2000s (I will look it up on Soccerbase later), which I believe was live on Sky. Me and a mate were one of about 200 Saints fans up there and we went 1-0 down. Kachloul (I believe) raced through one-on-one and somehow missed and the longer the game went on the more we looked likely to get nothing, having played pretty well. Then someone got to the byline and crossed for Pahars to bury a header and we went absolutely f'ing mental. It was like we'd won the FA Cup. I ended up about five rows down from where I'd originally been sitting before eventually coming to my sense with the hugest headache and raspnig throat. It was a great 'away from home' moment and summed up just why we all bother turning up. Marvellous. Would be interested to hear from one of the other 200 who were there to see if they remember it!
Sevvy Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 At the dell versus Coventry football at its best won 8 - 2 with 2 hatricks one for wallace and one for moran i think
Iowsaintsfan Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 The FA Cup semi final at Villa Park the whole atmosphere the joy when we scored and knowledge we were going to the cup final when the 2nd goal went in, the joy and excitement was overwelming i remember hugging some complete stranger as we did we where swamped by another 5 or 6 other people and ended up falling down the upper tier behind the goal, battered and bruised but im sure none of us felt it, well maybe not until the next day
warsash saint Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 Best moments......Walking into the Millenium Stadium & seeing the sea of yellow / Barry Horne's goal against Bolton & the best for me - Ken Monkou's injury time winner at Carrow Road to win 5-4 in the Bally days Worst - Darren Bent's injury time goal for Everton & realising that Redknapp was taking us down
Foxstone Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 The 6-3 home win against Manure takes some beating especially as all the goals scored by us (Le Tiss, Berkovic and Ostenstad) were absolute corkers ! Just loved looking towards the dugout at the Glasgow Groaner's face which was redder and more incandescent with rage than usual - Was it after that game that he grizzled about the grey shirts ? The televised 4-0 rout of Spurs in the FA Cup 3rd round was memorable for many reasons. We absolutely outclassed them in front of the TV cameras and how we laughed as a forlorn Glenda watched from the sidelines not knowing what to do or where to hide! Somehow I think we are not that many years away from being able to enjoy similar moments again !

My favourite part was Anders Svensson dribbling the ball from the halfway line, the defence backing off and backing off, and anders thinking "ok if you won't tackle me I'll shoot".
