Toomer Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 I think I am correct in thinking that he booked the Norwich number 6 twice, after he booked him the second time the 4th official tried to have words with him and he waved him away, it looked like AP was going mental in the technical area about it. Also when Antonio was brought down outside the box I he was through on goal and may well have scored, straight red IMO.
The Kraken Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Oh good, a separate thread. Because this hasn't been discussed at all in any of the match threads....
NickG Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 think yellow was right for the Antonio one - but he made a lot of other mistakes When Papa went down in box - didn't have clear view but to me looked like either pushed or dived -so penalty or booking? Two punches on James - yellow?
saints_is_the_south Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 think yellow was right for the Antonio one It was a deliberate foul though, whether there were other defenders around him doesn't really matter IMO, the Norwich defender deliberatly hacked Antonio down to stop him getting what would probably have been a clear run on goal or at the very least into a very dangerous position. Deliberate foul = proffesional foul = red card in my book. Didn't really see the punching incident. But yes as a conclusion, the referee was awful last night as were his "assistants"
NickG Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 The term that makes it subjective is "denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity". Think that is read that an almost certain goal - i.e. only had to put it into empty net, hand ball on the line. Think Antonio had a chance to score, but that far out and with other defenders around would expect yellow.

I was right next to pards and saw him with his finger on the 4th officials chest screaming at him with the 4th official repeatedly saying "dont touch me, dont touch me" So much drama in that game it was unbelievable. Slept with a smile on my face last night (in my saints shirt of course)
Kingsland Codger Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 You don't have to deny a scoring opportunity to be given a red card; a cynical and dangerous foul would be enough, wherever it happened on the pitch. The defender who hacked Antonio down should have been sent off.
NickG Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 think you are mixing two rules; dangerous - red card , violent play etc - it wasn't that there were many harsher tackles than that last night. cynical/professional foul - must be an obvious goal scoring opportunity - it wasn't, imho, it was good chance but still plenty of defenders coming in and still a little way out .

Spot on. 'Serious foul play' or 'violent conduct' plus the other, more technical offences. Cynical 'professional' fouls should be a red card in my book.
Scummer Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Linesman and ref may have done us a favour at the end. Bart moved forward off his line before the last penalty was struck. The officials had a good long look at each other before deciding to let it go.
Whitey Grandad Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Linesman and ref may have done us a favour at the end. Bart moved forward off his line before the last penalty was struck. The officials had a good long look at each other before deciding to let it go. I've looked at it again and paused the highlights and he does not leave his line until the ball is kicked. There was one instance where he definitely got it wrong. In the first half Norwich took a quick free-kick and Rickie intercepted but was not 10 yards away so the ref stopped play and had a word with Rickie. According to the Laws of the Game: 'If a player decides to take a free kick quickly and an opponent who is less than 9.15 m from the ball intercepts it, the referee must allow play to continue.' So there!
marc_saint Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 Grant Holt wasn't very happy with the ref. Never mind. Lol!!! http://new.eveningnews24.co.uk/content/Sport/story.aspx?brand=ENOnline&category=Sport&tBrand=ENOnline&tCategory=Sport&itemid=NOED16+Dec+2009+11%3A09%3A13%3A670

SoccerMom Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 “We got myself, Michael Nelson, Russell and Chris Martin, Gary Doherty all yellow carded and they never got any, so that tells you the measure of the game." S'not fair!! Well, quite.

The Godfather Posted 17 December, 2009 Posted 17 December, 2009 Nothing like a blinkered view is their Mr Holt, you moaning dirty bastard.
converted_saint Posted 18 December, 2009 Posted 18 December, 2009 Saw Holt after the game and asked him how his face was...didn't appreciate it much I don't think, just walked off, probably in search of a burger the dirty, fat ****
53andout Posted 18 December, 2009 Posted 18 December, 2009 This incident that Holt refers to what right in front of me Antonio did in fact put his body between Holt and the ball catching him no higher that the rib cage The ball remained in play and I believe the number 6 from Norwich wo was spoiling for a fight all night waded in for which the free kick was awarded. Bart wanted to take it quickly but was halted by the ref whilst he spoke with Holt who was off the pitch The ref gave him every opportunity to return to the field of play he decided to roll around a bit more. He was off the field of play and should have infact returned to the half way line before returning to the game Returning without permission as he did is in fact a yellow card offence 2 yellows = red he should have been sent off. which would have been harsh in the circumstances Rather than criticise the ref he needs to look at his own behaviour I sure without his antics the ref would have allowed the free kick to be taken and then blown the whistle Norwich win 2-1 ens of story Wembley here we come

The Norwich number 6 (my programme doesn't show them having a number 6!) should have been off for two punches to (I think) Lloydy while he was on the ground in front of the Itchen - the ref & linesman were both within a few feet of the incident & only booked the player. Norwich are one of the better footballing sides in this league but they got what they deserved out of the match - there was a cynical & dirty side to the team that was out there which ultimately cost them ...listen & learn Grant Holt!
