Thedelldays Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 are the goals/highlights available anywhere
shurlock Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 (edited) great stuff are any players suspended at the weekend after last night..? leeds did not even play beckford... should be a cracker No but Schneiderlin who's nearing a suspension was taken off. Not tactical but injured- is now a doubt for saturday. That does complicate things since hes been excellent and Wotton once again proved his shadow-chasing credentials. West End Saint Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 I thought we played some good stuff 1st half so did they looked like two very good sides & 1-1 was fair at half time. They battered us second half but fair play to Pards for trying to change it & fair play to the boys for not giving up Saints of recent years would have folded & gone out with a wimper but these boys have got some bottle desire & will to win I am loving being a Saint Get In.
krissyboy31 Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 (edited) A poor game tactically by [Paul] Lambert. Taking off Hoolahan and making a couple of defensive substitutions in the last 10 minutes (to shut up shop), handed us the initiative after they had comfortably controlled the majority of the second half. stevegrant Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 are the goals/highlights available anywhere Think they'll be on the BBC site from tomorrow.
Scummer Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 A poor game tactically by [Paul] Lambert. Taking off Hoolighan and making a couple of defensive substitutions in the last 10 minutes (to shut up shop), handed us the initiative after they had comfortably controlled the majority of the second half. Wonder if he took off people who would have taken penalties as well.
stevegrant Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Wonder if he took off people who would have taken penalties as well. Hoolahan takes their penalties, so he'd have certainly taken one in the shootout.
Scummer Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Why is Lloyd James never on the MOTM match polls. He'd have been on my shortlist for both last Saturday and last night.
stevegrant Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Why is Lloyd James never on the MOTM match polls. He'd have been on my shortlist for both last Saturday and last night. Previously, there's always been a limit of 10 options on a poll. I've only just noticed that there's an admin option to change this
saint_stevo Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Huge praise goes to Pards We were below par tonight, but AP has installed a mentality within in the team to keep going & believe We would have lost that game last season Disagree. Some odd substitutions IMO

Scummer Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Disagree. Some odd substitutions IMO Very imaginative though. When Thomas came on the simple option would have been to put him at centre back. Instead he moved James in there to dictate the play and bring it out from the back.
JackFrost Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 In the first half SSN were ranting on how good Jacob Mellis was playing
Saint Without a Halo Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Is it really us scoring last minutre goals now! I got so used to everyone else doing it to us when we hold a lead and us rolling over and giving up whenever anyone else held a lead over the last few years that I seem to have forgotten it is possible! Long may it last!
kpturner Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Strange - in more ways than one...!Inability to quote properly methinks.
Window Cleaner Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Really chuffed, couldn't follow the game after half-time last night because I had a very early start this morning.Beat Norwich on penalties and no yellows for us whereas they picked up 5 or 6.
saint_stevo Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 In the first half SSN were ranting on how good Jacob Mellis was playing Did well for the first 5 minutes. Missing thereafter
Saint Lindford Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Area final draw MK Dons v Southampton w/c Jan 18th Southampton v MK Dons w/c Feb 15th
Saint_clark Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Area final draw MK Dons v Southampton w/c Jan 18th Southampton v MK Dons w/c Feb 15th Confirmed?
Saint Lindford Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Confirmed? Yep on FL website http://www.football-league.co.uk/johnstonespainttrophy/news/trophy-area-finals-draw-20091216_2246525_1906481
The Cat Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Mellis did ok. Worked hard, made one 50 yard run to win possession when they were looking threatening on the break. Thought it was a good game between 2 teams who are playing way above League 1 standard at the moment. Main difference seemed to be that they kept Lallana quiet, whereas we failed to disrupt their midfield enough which let Hoolahan dictate play. As previously mentioned it was a big mistake by Lambert taking him off. Pretty amazing scenes at the end, and to get 15000+ for a JPT game is nothing short of fantastic. Fair play to everyone who turned out with the exception of the fool behind me who insisted on showing everyone around us exactly how little he knew about the game of football at an inadvisable volume....we can't man mark left backs for 90 minutes mate, it's just never gonna happen!
Saint_clark Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Yep on FL website http://www.football-league.co.uk/johnstonespainttrophy/news/trophy-area-finals-draw-20091216_2246525_1906481 Get in. So good to be playing second leg at home.
krissyboy31 Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Confirmed? Yes. http://www.football-league.co.uk/johnstonespainttrophy/news/trophy-area-finals-draw-20091216_2246525_1906481
RedAndWhite91 Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 In the first half SSN were ranting on how good Jacob Mellis was playing That's because Mellis did play well before he went off, he looked lively and had some good touches, he caused them a few problems in the middle as well in the first 25 minutes. A definite improvement on what I've seen from Mellis before this season.
krissyboy31 Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Strange how Norwich couldn't handle and seemed frightened to death by Antonio. Whereas his impact against Tranmere on Saturday, was minimal at best.
Window Cleaner Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Yes. http://www.football-league.co.uk/johnstonespainttrophy/news/trophy-area-finals-draw-20091216_2246525_1906481 Pretty heavy fixture list mid January then. Away to Millwall on the 16th, Away to MK midweek and then the FA Cup 4th Round (or Swindon at home) on the 23rd.
derry Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 OK down to earth time. Good first half from both sides. This was not Div 1 football it was far superior. 1-1 at half time was a fair reflection on the game. Worry was we were too narrow again, gave Norwich too much room on their right, our left. Assumed Pardew would correct it for the second half but he did not. Second half Norwich were the better side. Not saying they stepped up a gear, we stepped down one. Last gasp equaliser was thrilling and the penalty shoot out top class. Every penalty on target for both sides and some good saves from both keepers Happy again tonight. Spot on again Ron. The key to our whole game is Lallana. Tonight he was back to his best headless chicken mode almost never taking up an early wide left midfield position and floating around the centre of the pitch. In the first 20 minutes whilst Waigo was mostly wide right we had our best spell but as soon as he moved inside, more the fact that Lallana was narrow caused the back and midfield players to hit the ball up to the front. Lallana worked hard at what he was doing but it was counterproductive and caused him to be pretty much a non entity, it also allowed Norwich to get at us by picking off Harding as he wasn't tracking their wide runners. Starting with the Norwich league game, for 5 matches Lallana played like a proper left midfielder and we benefited, but on Saturday he was back to staying inside and going wide late, last night was even worse. Unless he disciplines himself and plays like a proper left sided midfielder we are going to get murdered down our left. We damn near lost that game last night because of it. Lambert up front on his own was only picking up scraps as we hardly put a move together after the first 20 minutes.

Tonight he was back to his best headless chicken mode almost never taking up an early wide left midfield position and floating around the centre of the pitch. He only played LMF in the first half, when Morgan was playing!!. In the second half we had a selection of players playing there. Waigo, Hammond (who was terrible there btw) and latterly Harding. You can't blame AL for not staying left when he had been pushed up top! HTH
Cabrone Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Sounded like a very good win last night. It's a great sign when the team can claw things back against one of the league 1 contenders even when we aren't playing too well. Although I rate this cup as mickey mouse I hope we get a big confidence boost from this game to take into our tough looking Dec\Jan fixture list.

Waigo, Hammond (who was terrible there btw) and latterly Harding. You can't blame AL for not staying left when he had been pushed up top! HTH You are missing the point, he didn't play left midfield at any time but stayed mostly central. When we changed to 4-4-2 he was still supposed to be LM and it was only when we went 3-5-2 at the end that we had Harding out wide.

Waigo went there originally, then after Norwich scored, we went to a sort of 4-1-2-2-1 with Wotton holding Mellis and Hammond widish and Waigo and Lallana behind Lambert. That didn't work at all and allowed Norwich to control the game but that id NOT Lallana's fault it was the system's. Eventually with the 3-5-2, we managed to get a foothold in the game and the rest is history.

RedAndWhite91 Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Better put some overtime in then cos January is gonna be bloody expensive.

Look I'm not arguing the toss with you about semantics, as I saw it Waigo played up in support of Lambert but does move across the line. Lallana did not play like a proper left sided midfielder and stayed most of the time in a central position. That allowed Harding to be picked off. If you don't understand the problem you aren't alone.
Whitey Grandad Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 & then away to Brentford on the 26th! If Luton force a replay (could happen) then 12th / 13th could also be needed.

Eventually with the 3-5-2, we managed to get a foothold in the game and the rest is history. When interviewed, Pardew said we changed our formation around several times during the match, just to try and get back into it. That's quite tough to do, with everyone knowing their jobs. So we can add flexibility and brains to the CV of this team.

He sometimes gets indifferent reviews on here like "did what was necessary 6" that's him all over, makes it look so simple that most of it goes unnoticed half the time.

Didnt get to the game but on the radio Merrington said that in the second half we were going with Lallana and Lambert up top with Waigo in the hole. He grumbled that it would be better for Waigo to go up top and Lallana to play in the hole but the assumption was that Pards had told all three to play in more central positions rather than for Lallana or Waigo to hug the touchline. To the extent that this was tactical, its hard to criticise any of our players for neglcting their responsibilities and not getting wide. Not saying that this is always the case but it seems yesterday there were special circumstances.

He sometimes gets indifferent reviews on here like "did what was necessary 6" that's him all over, makes it look so simple that most of it goes unnoticed half the time. The central midfield have a hard time when the wide midfielders tuck in, as the place they mostly want to play the ball to is out to the touchlines. With the wide midfielders tight to them and the opponents allowed to compact, it forces them to have to knock the ball forward. Schneiderlin is at his best when the touchlines are occupied.

Not saying that this is always the case but it seems yesterday there were special circumstances. It was very narrow and pretty chaotic in the middle and up front there was precious little shape. Norwich were well on top for all but the last 10 minutes when they backed off and allowed our 3-5-2 or whatever to knock balls into the box. For the record they replaced Schneiderlin at half time but kept the same formation, on the hour Antonio came on for Mellis and we went 4-4-2 with Lallana still LM, then 15 mins from the end, Thomas replaced Perry and went to the right of Trotman with James to the left in a back three with Harding and Antonio wide, Hammond and Wotton were central with only Waigo and Lambert doing anything up front as Lallana was really only on the periphary. To sum it up, to date, 230 have voted in MOTM, but Lallana didn't get a vote. Edited 16 December, 2009 by derry
dubai_phil Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 Really enjoyed that, two teams playing good football, lots of positives (and of course some negatives), but a great evening if feckin cold for me having flown in the afternoon before. James made a mistake and was beaten for pace but made up for it with a great defensive header in the first half, WTF was this Papa offside stuff all about? Thought he showed real signs of being able to become a really good player (Work in progress still) Will have more time to read the reports tomorrow darned library has a timer on me! Lol at poor Norwich conceding an equaliser with about 10 seconds to go, lol at their forward who should have been back defending the free kick not rolling around for an oscar and well done on the penalties, Wayne Thomas was never going to miss the body language from the moment he started the walk. Excellent early Christmas Present but FFS install some central heating for me before I come back next time!

Excellent early Christmas Present but FFS install some central heating for me before I come back next time! I know exactly what you mean. I've always said in a penalty shoot out you need experienced heads, it's just too much pressure on a youngster, I think there's a significant difference and it was the case last night. I was always 100% Thomas was gonna score the deciding penalty. I remember in the playoff shootout against Derby, I know Idiakez taints my theory but I had my head in my hands as soon as Leon Best walked up. . . .
Saint_clark Posted 16 December, 2009 Posted 16 December, 2009 When Antonio ran up to take his penalty, who was it that ran after him and said something in his ear?
