Tac-tics Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 So can not believed we done that, we are the better side than Norwich, maybe not tonight I was 50/50 listiening on the boom box. Anotonio, jesus I went nuts and had a skate laughing in my face, then bloody Bart and Big Wayne. Well up for MK Dons. still think Carlisle will go for Leeds.
Mark`` Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 The question is. What the **** was Antonio doing when he took his penalty. Nice 2 Step stroll then a side foot straight at the keeper...
saint_stevo Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 um.....we were ****e. Good first 20mins. Then we looked poor, backed off, Hoolahan came into it (best player on the park IMO) and we looked clueless, much like Swindon away..... Lambert spent the game getting outjumped and outmuscled by Doherty and Nelson with his back to goal. Looked like he needed help up there. Strange subs as well IMO, need a goal with 15mins left so we change our defence around completely, may have gone to 3 at the back but not sure exactly what happened. Harding LM? James LB? Waigo very good in fits and starts, at times looks like he has never played, and at others like a world beater. Reacted quickly to equalise. Nice foul throw....no offsides though. Wotton came on and was tripe. Utter Pony. Rubbish. GO AWAY. Mellis was missing, few nice touches but L1 doesn't seem to suit his style. Needs time and space. Lucky to be looking forward to an area final i'd say. Oh and the BBC think Harding scored the equaliser.....strange.
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 We had a free-kick right by our own corner flag. If he'd just got on with the game, he'd have been back defending on his 18-yard line and then back right in the thick of it when the ball went further. When you've got a one-goal lead in the last minute of injury time and the opposition launch a free-kick into the area, you get everyone back, especially if they're as good as Holt is in the air. Not if Nick H is your manager you don't!
Um Bongo Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Agreed, however you cannot deny that we didn't deserve to win that game! Antonio could have been sent off at the end for an elbow: that could have changed everything. Regardless, we're through! We can play attractive footy in the next round! :-) Rubbish, it wasn't an elbow and Holt was a cheating ****. Player Ratings: Bart: Finally saved some penalties, not too troubled in the game. 9/10 James: Did well, and moved to the center without any problems. 7/10 Trotman: Get rid, we can buy better. 6/10 Perry: Did well untill he was kicked in the head. 7/10 Harding: Some good runs, and supported Lallana well. 7/10 Waigo: MOTM. Looked confident and took his goals well. A must start on Saturday. 9/10 Schniderlin: Was rubbish really, and glad he went off. 6/10 Hammond: Did well, didn't get booked and put himself about. 8/10 Mellis: Can go back to Chelsea. Not good enough for our team. 5/10 Lallana: Lots of running again, a key player. 8/10 Lambert: Probably the worst player for us tonight. But scored his penalty, so thats good. 6/10 Subs: Wotton: Did alright. 7/10 Thomas: Should start saturday at Leeds. 7/10 Antonio: He's getting Worse & worse. 5/10.
kpturner Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 I feel it depends on the spirit of the invasion... for instance last game at the Dell, good hearted and joyus. the season we beat the drop against Sheffield United...no drama's. Any non league giant killing. Nothwich Victoria v Norwich this year and it does n't even get mentioned only in the light that the media love it as it is all part of the atmosphere of the cup. It is another example of taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut. a futile law that is only used when it suits. I went to watch Rotherham at Shrewsbury a couple of weeks ago and had my coke bottle top removed, even though there was about 100 rotherham fans, what is the point of that apart from me ending up with wind as I have drunk my coke to fast! the country has gone nuts when you get ****s on here moaning on a night like tonight about a small kid running on a football field. twists my melon. You can list plenty of pitch invasions that are not good hearted and joyous (I think that is what you meant) also - i.e. Burnley at home. What are you going to have - a bloke on the PA saying "OK, today you may invade the pitch because it clearly a joyous occasion"? It doesn't work, so you have to blanket ban it.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Penalty shootouts are great. At the moment. And not in playoff semi-finals.
stevegrant Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 the country has gone nuts when you get ****s on here moaning on a night like tonight about a small kid running on a football field. twists my melon. Mike, I don't think anyone would be making anything of it at all if it didn't have such an obvious impact on what was actually going on on the pitch. You've got a young player who's only been a pro for 18 months stepping up to take a match-winning penalty in a sudden-death situation and then some little **** decides he's going to act the idiot for a laugh. I'll tell you one thing, I wasn't laughing. Antonio looked confident when he walked up, but he clearly wanted to get it over and done with. That delay was critical, IMO. Fortunately, we got away with it thanks to Bart's excellent third save.
miserableoldgit Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 The question is. What the **** was Antonio doing when he took his penalty. Nice 2 Step stroll then a side foot straight at the keeper... Oh, he was distracted by the 5 year old that ran on the pitch and jumped into Waigos arms apparently.
kpturner Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 oh no you didntOkay - so how much did you pay?
Jimmy_D Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Oh and the BBC think Harding scored the equaliser.....strange. Was announced on the PA system at St Mary's as Harding for some reason, hence all the news places reporting it as that.
Andy_Porter Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 That was an absolutley mental end to the game, the last 20 minutes and the penalty kicks where just mental. First half was some of the best football i've seen at St Marys for a while, certainly didn't look like two league one sides. For the first 20 we where all over them and should have won the game considering all our chances. Then they started exploting our left hand side, having Schneiderlin there didn't work imo and was a good idea taking him off and changing it. The second half was very ugly and bitty, not got a clue what sort of formation we where trying to play for the first 20-25 minutes before Antonio came on and we switched to a 4-4-2, whatever it just wasn't working until Antonio came on. Lloyd James moving to centre half was one of the strangest moves i've seen from a manager in a long time, seemed to work though he was a lot more assured in posession and played the ball out from defence and started our attack where previously we where just hoofing it any where. All the shootout credit has to go to Bart, three great saves under a fair bit of pressure. Superb all night, can't see Davis getting back into the side.
Tractor_Saint Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Bang on! Frankly glad that the younger generation are loving watching Saints again. The future fanbase begins here.... Right, my two penneth and I think I might be the minority here. 1. I doubt he was 5 - more like 7. I have a 4 year old and a 7 year old who come the football with me and I'd never ever ever allow them to run onto the pitch during a game on their own. I *think* he was with a group of young 'lads' who spilled into the front of Kingsland having left the Northam early before the equaliser (great support lads) and constantly were told to sit down by the stewards and find seats rather than stand but failed to do as requested. 2. No one is going to convince me that it's OK to run onto the pitch during a game no matter how old they are 3. The young 'fans' obviously thought this was funny and, therefore, led on by a 7 year old, some of them decided to try the pitch invasion themselves - how clever was that (especially for the 'fan' that was tackled to the ground and sat on by two police officers and two officials). 4. I'm sure the 5/6/7 year old is really chuffed now. I was sat right behind the 'lads' when he was handed back and he was in tears because he was very very scared (and don't you dare tell me it was because of the way the stewards handled him).
saint_stevo Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 not sure the chorus of boos for the steward taking the kid (about 5yrs old Granty, not sure u can call him a ****!) out of Waigo's arms helped Antonio when he stepped up....
Andy_Porter Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Strange subs as well IMO, need a goal with 15mins left so we change our defence around completely, may have gone to 3 at the back but not sure exactly what happened. Harding LM? James LB? Wotton came on and was tripe. Utter Pony. Rubbish. GO AWAY. Think it was still same as before just James at cb, Harding did seem to play a lot further forward. We seemed to lose the little bit of shape we did have at that point and play really direct with James starting most our attacks.
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 um.....we were ****e. Good first 20mins. Pw has been pretty good the last few times he's came off the bench - we have a good first team squad so don't start picking on people- The team is a very hard to beat unit with a cracking never say die attitude at the moment - just give thanks ffs
Tractor_Saint Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Penalties question - was it (in order): Lambert (goal) Papa (goal) James (miss) Lallana (goal) Wotton (goal) Antonio (miss) Hammond (goal) Thomas (goal) Is that right?
rallyboy Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 If Holt had been booked twice he should have been booked a third time for his appalling acting display that fooled no one and gave us the extra seconds to equalise and send him and his tubby chums home shell-shocked. Mmmm, a good night, no - a great night!
saint_stevo Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Pw has been pretty good the last few times he's came off the bench - we have a good first team squad so don't start picking on people- The team is a very hard to beat unit with a cracking never say die attitude at the moment - just give thanks ffs He was crap. So i shall say, he was crap. oh and slow.
jawillwill Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Was it a full strength team from Norwich?
stevegrant Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Was it a full strength team from Norwich? Similar to us, think they had two injuries to their regular first choice.
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 You can list plenty of pitch invasions that are not good hearted and joyous (I think that is what you meant) also - i.e. Burnley at home. It doesn't work, so you have to blanket ban it. so if you blanket ban it - why not at all sports, cricket, motor racing rugby. not in favour of blanket bans as you end up living in a dictatorship with no freedom of speach or freedom of movement. so because some people 'drink drive we will blanket ban alchol'.... and so on.
saint_stevo Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Was it a full strength team from Norwich? Pretty much. Holt and Hoolahan played. NB- Holt was booked twice yeah? And not sent off? EDIT- BBC Live text- 34:57 Booking The referee cautions Grant Holt for unsporting behaviour. 89:01 Booking Grant Holt is booked.

I was right next to that incident and I beg to differ, but anyway. Lambert worst player on the pitch? He didn't really have much to work with, plus surely Mellis was the worst on the pitch going by your team ratings? I disagree with Waigo being MOTM too but apart from that spot on assessment.
Whitey Grandad Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Shall think themselves accursed they were not here... Just got back and I'm still buzzing. We were doing well until they scored and then they just gradually took control until I could see no way that we could score. I saw loads leaving with 10 minutes to go and for once I could understand why, but I always stick it out to the end and now I always shall. Papa was very disciplined and not offside once. A well timed run for his first goal and he gobbled up a loose ball for his second with the last kick of the match. A special mention for Wotton. Who else thought he was going to blow it? I'd have preferred a clean sheet. It was daylight robbery but 'who cares'? \\:D/

saint_stevo Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Would struggle to pick a MOTM. Probably Waigo just for goals and a decent display. Harding did ok
miserableoldgit Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 I feel it depends on the spirit of the invasion... for instance last game at the Dell, good hearted and joyus. the season we beat the drop against Sheffield United...no drama's. I agree. I am generally against pitch invasions of any sort but tonight a 5 year old, caught up in the atmosphere like everyone else, ran up to Waigo and jumped up into his arms. Two stewards , IMHO, roughly carried him off. I thought that on this occaision, Waigo going over and giving him his shirt was a lovely touch which added to the joyous feeling at the end. Will it encourage hordes of 5 year olds to carry out "pitch invasions?? Of course it won`t.
Andy_Porter Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Schneiderlin was the worst player on the pitch, shouldn't be asked to play that role ever again. Doesn't suit him or the team.
opthomps Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 so cold here -10 walking to work, but who cares coz I have just found out saints have done the business again. Bring on dirty Leeds!
kpturner Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 so if you blanket ban it - why not at all sports, cricket, motor racing rugby. not in favour of blanket bans as you end up living in a dictatorship with no freedom of speach or freedom of movement. so because some people 'drink drive we will blanket ban alchol'.... and so on.I cannot continue with this side-issue - you are now spouting badly spelled drivel. Get back to sorting out that sheep.
stevegrant Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Why didn't Wotton take a pen? He's been a set piece taker most his career. He was brilliant at it for Plymouth, yet not in our 7. Antonio wasn't a better bet! Wotton took the 5th one. Lambert Papa Waigo James Lallana Wotton Hammond Antonio Thomas
Colinjb Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Right, my two penneth and I think I might be the minority here. 1. I doubt he was 5 - more like 7. Lets stamp out all feeling and make the sport the sterile pro spectacle it deserves to be. Remove all emotion and lets make it the stoic respectable event football should be. Regardless of fear they may have felt they where emotional and excited children and they where seemingly treated like hardened criminals. That sounds like a horrible lack of perspective to me. Some people need to get a life, and yes equally some parents may need to buy a leash.
Tractor_Saint Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Thought Norwich played well and didn't allow Saints to play their game. Seemed every loose ball was picked up by a yellow shirt. Their number 14 (sorry, Hoolahan or something) was fantastic and a real playmaker into everything. Glad he was subbed! Papa was good and held the line well ! I usually don't like James but today was not too bad and the penalty miss is just one of those things and I can't blame him for that. Hopefully he won't be too hard on himself. Lallana chased a lot but didn't really make great inroads. Those of you in the Itchen - didn't their number 6 punch one of players a few times right in front of the linesman? Thought he was off but only a yellow card ffs?? Can't believe we scored in injury time - that's not what we do ? I need a few more beers tonight to understand why I feel so so so happy and we didn't really play that well !!
saint_stevo Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Why didn't Wotton take a pen? He's been a set piece taker most his career. He was brilliant at it for Plymouth, yet not in our 7. Antonio wasn't a better bet! He did. the 5th i think
RedAndWhite91 Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Absolutely mental. When we scored the last-kick equaliser I fell over the seat behind me and ended up on my back, with some lad I don't even know leaning over cheering. The whole place went mad. Even more mental when we won the shoot out. I never witnessed a penalty shoot out before and it is up there as one of the most nerve wracking, tense moments of my life. Gutted to f*ck all of you who left early, you know who you are. You missed out on an exciting climax. Some were even leaving before 80 minutes was on the board, I wouldn't want to get away from the ground and escape 5 minutes of queueing for all that excitement, sod that. And to top off the quality night (of which the ticket only cost me a fiver) I won £45 on my accy. Lovely.
saint_stevo Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Looked like matey did land a few on Lloyd James to me as well
the saint in winchester Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Just not the Saints we all know is it? Closing games down, keeping slender leads, fighting back and winning penalty shoot outs? Alan Pardew WTF have you done with our team?! :-) ..... we love it!
Bailey Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Wow. That's not the Saints we're all used to. Since when did we have the character to score a late goal AND go on to win the game on penalties? Can't fault the effort of the lads tonight though, their attitude was spot on. Still, I can't help but feel we're very fortunate to have progressed tonight. Norwich were by far the better side for the majority of the game, and I have to admit, I think Pards got the tactics wrong. We were too narrow in midfield and we isolated Harding. Norwich had more than their fair share of possession and on another day, they would have won that in normal time. Having said that, we did well to claw our way back into the game, so full credit to the lads for that. Special mention to Waigo; took both of his goals brilliantly tonight, great to see his infamous celebration once more! And well done Bialkowski too! I haven't always been his biggest fan, but he was superb tonight. He commanded his area superbly and made some vital saves in the shoot-out. At this rate, Davis may have a job on trying to get back into the starting XI! Delighted to progress, now lets go the whole way and make it to Wembley. It would be fantastic to see Saints Vs Leeds in front of a sell-out crowd in the final. Here's hoping anyway!
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Mike, I don't think anyone would be making anything of it at all if it didn't have such an obvious impact on what was actually going on on the pitch. I'll tell you one thing, I wasn't laughing. Antonio looked confident when he walked up, but he clearly wanted to get it over and done with. That delay was critical, IMO. Fortunately, we got away with it thanks to Bart's excellent third save. Steve...its all part of the pressure of being a footballer - either you handle it or you don't. He will have to learn to block things like this out.As you say fortunately it does n't matter. But to be suggesting you ban a five year old kid who has got a little bit carried away/excited/confused is really quite annal and a prime example of why this country is such a mess. The guy has no common sense. I'm thirty seven and still find my self acting the idiot from time to time for a laugh. I guess thats the kid in me - and I guess i come from an era when it was n't against the law to run on the pitch and I can still remember that buzz of excitment on the last day of the season in getting onto the pitch and running around on the place where my hero's play.... perhaps the good news for us is that it seems we now five year olds that have hero's in red and white stripes again!!!
saintchris Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Agree, Paul Wotton was awfull when he came on, considering he was bought onto break up play i dont think he made 1 tackle or interception, and he hardly has the vision of morgan either.
the saint in winchester Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 I lost the feed off the Saints player I am in New York what the fffff happened? I know we went to pens but what next, did Bart save any? Any? He saved hundreds of them!
kpturner Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 I never witnessed a penalty shoot out before and it is up there as one of the most nerve wracking, tense moments of my life. Just wait until it really matters - like the Championship play-off final in a coupla years ;-)

The linesman could not have missed it. Clearly two punches is only worth a yellow
