Another fatal accident, only 3 weeks after the last.

Time for it to be made a dual carriage way IMO. Of course it would mean faster speed limits but i don't feel this is the problem, its people pulling out of junctions. Put traffic lights on each junction & this would eradicate accidents.

A dual carriage way would also greatly improve traffic flow as the road is virtually a stand still during rush hour periods. Anybody else use the road on a daily basis??

My riding instructor (motorbikes) openly boasted of doing nearly 200mph down that road, in ear shot of his "students", "****" i thought... its already a dangerous road yeah, whether that be idiots riding too quick or (as was probably the case here) motorists not paying attention.

200mph!

I tend to go a little over the speed limit but that will only be at silly o'clock time when coming back from an evening shift, but no more than 70-75.

Your riding instructor is a knob, if he thinks he wants to go fast he should go racing then we'll see how fast he is, 200mph on a public road is just ridiculous and he's probably stretching the truth as well, takes a long way for a road bike to get to its maximum speed and not many go that fast anyway, even road based race bikes struggle with those speeds. Call him a liar not an instructor.

It's a strange road and i can see how there is so many accidents when your on a bike each lane is wide enough so you can filter at speed and when it's quite people just seem to ignore the speed limit i for one have been guilty of that.Be it a car or bike though you just can't account for what people will do pulling out of side junctions and maybe more roundabouts or traffic lights would help.

I've been using the road twice a day for years, although I go from home in Shirley to work in Hythe so I avoid the worst of the jams.

The problem as I see it is not the road but a minority of the bikers. Some of them go at such high speed when compared with the rest of the traffic that it's not surprising that they come to grief. It only needs one of the heavy trucks to wander slightly towards the middle of the road as they are being overtaken and these guys would get swatted into the undergrowth.

I keep a eye on the mirror and move over for bikes but some of them come up behind you so quickly that often, you don't have time to react.

Not condoning his actions but a decent bike could easily top out on the 'new' dual carriageway section.

IMO the road has too many large slow vehicles servicing the refinery, and too many right turns across the traffic flow. Couple this with the amount of bikes that use the road and that want to blast round the wagons, and its easy to see where the problems lie.

Apparently when the road was first built Esso were going to pay for it to be made dual carriageway (hence the width of the verges and the radius of the bends) but for whatever reason the council decided to keep it single.
