Legod Third Coming Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 The Chelsea starting lineup against QPR in the Carling Cup game this year... Hilario Ivanovic Ferreira Belletti Hutchinson J Cole Mikel Malouda Zhirkov Kalou Borini I wonder what the team would have been if they had been playing Arsenal though? If we were playing Totton maybe we could go with 8 internationals and rest 8 others too...
Stu Man Do Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 I remember the last time we rested players in a cup game. Against United in the FA Cup in our relegation season. The clue as to how that turned out can be found in the previous sentence... I remember (if you're thinking of the same game as me) old Bagpuss allegedly made a deal with Fergie that if we put out a weakend team in the cup, they would put a weakend team out in the last league game ... That worked well ey!? As for this game to my mind, keep us winning = keeping a full strength team on the pitch. I appreciate the league is the priority but damn it I want us to win a trophy this year!!
CB Saint Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 Seeing as the Leeds game is the hardest and their is a good chance we may not pick up any points, perhaps we should rest our first team for that match and ensure we a fully fit, rested squad (with no suspensions) to guarentee picking up points against the "easier" teams.... ....just to be argumentative
dannysfc Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 Put Thomas in for Jaidi and Wotton in for Morgan. That'll do, thanks. I would also be happy with that but although we could either play Trotman with Perry or is Trotman cup-tied or not?! Also do we stick with Lambert and Connolly or do we rest Lambert and play Paterson instead or what?!
The9 Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 I remember the last time we rested players in a cup game. Me too, it was in our first match in the JPT this season. v Torquay Saints: Davis, James, Thomas, Perry, Harding, Wotton, Hammond, Gillett (Saganowski 46), Waigo, Antonio (Mills 46), Lambert. Subs (not used): Bialkowski, Lancashire, Paterson. The following match at Southend : Saints: Davis, James, Jaidi, Trotman, Harding, Wotton (Perry 85), Hammond, Schneiderlin (Mills 90), Lallana, Waigo, (Antonio 76), Lambert. Subs: Bialkowski, Thomas, Saganowski, Connolly So against Torquay we rested Jaidi, Trotman, Schneiderlin and Lallana, plus we picked Waigo and Antonio which I think we've only done together once since. And started Wotton in both...

That is quite clearly preposterous nonsense though, even for Redknapp. It's also the first time I've heard it, I'm wondering how far beyond your mates in the pub this rumour got, I don't remember it on Saints Forever and I was practically living on there at the time.
Plumstead_Saint Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 Why is the leeds game classed as more important than any other league game? Its of a higher profile for sure but really its just as important as beating tranmere or anyone else. Therefore we should play strong teams in both comps and thats exactly what we will do Easy. It's actually a less important game - Leeds will certainly finish above us so it's just a 3 pointer. Playing teams that we have a chance of overtaking are really 6 pointers... IMHO
the saint in winchester Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 yes...only idiots would put a cup ahead of the league when in the position we are in. NO ... only idiots would put so more store on an away game against the runaway leaders of the league over a genuine chance of Wembley and silverware, given the position we are in.

SaintBobby Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 says who...you..? just like a few weeks back thinking about promotion was unrealistic..? 9 points is feck all...if we were 9 points from safety would you say it was all over now..? of course you would not The bookmakers and betting exchanges is the answer to your first question. We're about 5/1 to be promoted, see http://www.oddschecker.com/football/english/league-one/coca-cola-league-1/promotion That's to say, the people putting their money where their mouth is reckon our chances at promotion are about 1 in 6. I'd guess this parcels out as about a c.35% chance of getting to the play-offs and a c. 40% chance of winning the play-offs if we get there. It is worth pointing out - just for the avoidance of doubt - that "getting to the play-offs" is not synonymous with getting promoted. I don't think anyone has explicitly stated that they amount to the same thing, but it is worth noting that even if we make it to the top six, we will still be odds against being promoted. In contrast, we are 7/2 to win the JPT and 4/3 to make the JPT final. That's to say, we have a VERY good chance - at least of a day out at Wembley. So, if you asked me: 1. Would I prefer promotion or winning the JPT? Obviously, promotion. 2. Would I prefer getting to the play-offs or winning the JPT? Hmmm...getting to the play-offs makes sense surely, but there's not an utterly massive amount in it. 3. Would I prefer to beat Norwich tomorrow or Leeds on Saturday? I'd definitely prefer to lose to Leeds on Saturday and beat Norwich tomorrow. That would make us heavily odds on to get to Wembley, and close to evens to win some silverware, whereas losing to Leeds would probably only damage our promotion chances by 2% or 3%, it certainly wouldn't extinguish them. QED. Field our best team tomorrow.
aintforever Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 I wonder what the team would have been if they had been playing Arsenal though? If we were playing Totton maybe we could go with 8 internationals and rest 8 others too... You're talking ******, by your rationalle Chelsea would have fielded their strongest side against QPR, not their reserves. All good manager prioritise certain games over others, it's not even just the big 4 all the other teams do it, even some in our league.

No, as I said above, the difference between us and the clubs you are using is that we don't have 22 internationals. I understand fully that managers rest players and prioritise. Chelsea are still taking the game against QPR seriously by dropping Ballak and replacing him with Joe Cole! They can still put out 11 players who are better than QPR. If we rest Hammond and Lallana....
teamsaint Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 It's actually a less important game - Leeds will certainly finish above us so it's just a 3 pointer. Playing teams that we have a chance of overtaking are really 6 pointers... IMHO indeed. Given that to make the playoffs we need something like 15 wins 5 draws 5 defeats, we can probably "afford" to lose away to Leeds. And if you assume that the top 5 will be Leeds Charlton Norwich Colu and Hudds, we might even be able to "afford" a defeat at Colchester. Really vital games will be Bristol Rovers MK and Millwall away, Swindon and Huddersfield at home. However, we really just need that two points per game average. I would take 3 wins 2 draws and a defeat from the next 6, which is a point short, but from a tough set of fixtures.
Born In The 80s Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 I would rest all the players who are a booking away from a ban as well as one or two other key starters and leave them on the bench (Lambert and Lallana). We all want a nice day out on the beer at Wembley, but in the grand scheme of things there are FAR more important things, such as a busy xmas schedule over the next few weeks. Lets face it, this competition is a complete joke and i am still completely stunned that we are competing in it.

You may think of it as a joke, but I suspect that a final of Southampton vs Leeds, two former Prem clubs, will raise its profile somewhat. Also, I'm 23, I've NEVER seen Saints win any silverware at all, unless you include the Ted Bates cup... I want to see us win this. Edited 15 December, 2009 by Jimmy_D
Harry Faz Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 We have to go for it on Tuesday , no resting players, or half measures. This is effectively a cup -qtr final. Given what we have been through the last few seasons, if we were to win a trophy at Wembley with 30000 + saints fans ,it would be a tremendous lift for the club, the players, the fans and the city. It would be a great way to celebrate the new era and put the past behind us. And of course lets get promotion as well...... I really dont think we need to prioritise one over the other at this stage.
RedAndWhite91 Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Norwich HAVE to leave out a few injured first team players, so why not capitalise on this and go full out for the win. Put out a strong side, stronger than theirs. If we win this then I fully believe we'll be at Wembley. Go for it.

Well I am 40 years older and I have not seen us win much silverware either. Seen great games seen great players as well

Lets face it, this competition is a complete joke and i am still completely stunned that we are competing in it. This is where I disagree. I would prefer to see players on 4 booking playing tonight and being suspended for Leeds, but ready to play against Exeter. Exeter is a must win, but we'd be happy with a draw at Leeds and if we lost it would only be a point lost to our expectations.

Exactly what I was thinking (well, replace 23 with 18 but same thing). I've never seen a game at the new Wembley and there would not be a more fitting first game than a final featuring Southampton.
Saint_clark Posted 15 December, 2009 Posted 15 December, 2009 Even if we didn't see them win, a great day out watching Saints at Wembley - how can anyone turn that down?
