alpine_saint Posted 15 September, 2008 Share Posted 15 September, 2008 Production is being halved and Swaythling will only get the cab chassis version of the new Transit (probably only because biggest demand is the UK). Yes, it really is the beginning of the end for Swaythling, the last Ford production line in the UK........ VT has gone BAT has gone Pirelli has gone BAE Systems has almost gone NXP has almost gone Alstom has gone Manor Bakeries has gone Wix Filtering has gone Does everyone in Southampton work in pubs and shops now ? A C Delco to the older posters, also 90% of the docks is just a container store now and Bacardi has gone as well. As for for people working in pubs, fat chance of that as most of them have closed. OldNick Posted 15 September, 2008 Author Share Posted 15 September, 2008 it is sad times for the city.IMO the council was too worried debating where to put the next set of traffic lights instead of doing what Portsmouth did which was to woo business away from us and made the economy strong before worrying about the more social issues. Mostly pretentious or yobbish, you are almost guaranteed to see a couple of fights if you go out on a Friday or Saturday night. EastleighSoulBoy Posted 15 September, 2008 Share Posted 15 September, 2008 1. Current model to be built at Swaythling until 2011 2. A 'commitment' to build chassis cab variants of the 'new' van at southampton from 2011 This means that current volumes of c.70,000 per annum will drop to a forecast of some 30,000 per annum. Oh! (and there's always an Oh!) Ford will review the situation in 2009. Which means that almost any scenario may happen! Radio 1 did lead with 'Transit production to cease at Southampton' on the 15.30 news. The 'new' Turkey plant, Kocaeli, has been operational for at least two years to my knowledge. Don't write it off yet, there may be life in the old girl!

exit2 Posted 17 September, 2008 Share Posted 17 September, 2008 My mate worked at Fords for 30yrs and speaking to him recently he says the unions havent helped at all with the ford situation. He says they basically run the show. I know Ford pay thousands of pounds on basic roles and jobs. His son currently is moving Transit vans from one side of the yard to the other on overtime at £35 per hour! They also have unskilled workers being paid around £40k for production line work such as fitting wind screen wipers and wheels!

They also have unskilled workers being paid around £40k for production line work such as fitting wind screen wipers and wheels!I worked at Fords for 5yrs when i left, and i have to say the unions have to take alot of the blame for this situation, like the sicknotes who cant work on the line and so get cushey jobs on the off line where their sickness disappears and they are able to work any overtime that comes up(7 day working) but cannot do a single shift on their old job and the company can do nothing about these leeches, because the union protects them! And no i'm not a company man! P.S your 40K for unskilled workers is very wide of the mark! my older brother works there, and does a reasonable amount of overtime and has earnt at most 33k. red&white4life Posted 19 September, 2008 Share Posted 19 September, 2008 R & D, not production. And they are cutting those jobs by about 50%. They are also knocking down both production buildings as some kind of tax write off. T0ssers. Crying shame about Fords. Worked there for 8 years and know a lot of people that still do. Good luck to them all. Col.

Totally agree - the city has become a toilet and SCC take the blame for this. It needs investment as badly as the football club. What would happen if Skandia went? The last person would have to turn out the light. Is there anything that Soton makes or is distinctive for anymore? Such a shame, the city has so much potential but decades of zero ambition and infighting has taken it's toll. Don't even get me started on infrastructure!
