An effective means of protest in the heart of Southampton ...

It's an obviously harmless form of protest so no real issues with it.

They probably had a bit of fun doing it also. No doubt it started and ended in a pub.

Personally I think it's good to see a few young people making their point about climate change although clearly it doesn't affect the global political debate.

About 20 years back I was doing the same (though no flash mobs then :-( )...

Do you think it made any point though? Do you think the passers by had any idea what was really going on? Don't you think some of the kids were there just to play a part in the absurdity of it? Does that detract from the effects of the protest anyway or not?

I take your points Joe. But reiterate it caused no hassle to anyone apart from a few startled grannies probably.

No real gain from it, but no loss either.

I suppose they got some attention as it was covered by the local media.

hey topgun, i'm not against it mate, just asking the questions you know?

To be fair, I probably see it as a bunch of kids having a laugh, which is fine in itself. I don'treally see how it could have a worthwhile effect as a significant protest though.

I loved the comment on the Daily Echo site from the woman who suffers from 'panic attacks as a result of angst ridden scenarios' or something similar though. I think she was implying that she may have dropped dead at the sight of somebody apparently receiving ardiac arrest treatment! Whatever next!

Just a pointless attempt to show how "wacky" they are and no doubt get themselves on youtube.

That would have certainly been at the forefront of the minds of many of the participators.

Exactly, I bet the surrounding public didn't have a clue as to what point they were trying to get across.

IMO unconventional social activities when used as a protest or to make a statement just make the protestors look odd and would personally put me and a lot of people off from wanting to know their ideas or have any association from them

Another reason why I absolutely f*cking hate student c*nts.

They should've smashed up a Mosque instead, right? That's the only form of 'proper protest'.

Why?

He doesn't like them because he is jealous he has never had three/four years of zero responsibility, getting leathered and then getting an internationally recognised qualification.

Fair play to them, it got them the publicity that they obviously wanted for their cause.

Much more effective than the protest I saw in Knightsbridge yesterday outside Harrods anyway!

not to mention avoiding paying any tax.

Still from what I gather, the shock that a lot of students are getting when they realise the majority of employers vastly prefer 'experience' to 'qualifications' after they graduate starts to make up for it. All topped off with 20k debts.

Rather a rash statement! Have you included law firms and hospitals in there?

Very specialized jobs. I'm talking more generally.

There have been thousands and thousands of students over the last few years that have graduated from uni (after being told there was a 95% chance of the course leading straight to a job) and gone straight on to jobseekers allowance. A few recently graduated ex students have told me when they attend job interviews it's the same story, over and over again.

One of them has recently been 'successful'. She graduated, was on the dole 18 months and finally managed to get a 12k job in a call centre

And there are plenty more who haven't bothered signing up who aren't in any government figures. In these times you have the official government's employment figures, then you have the real employment figures. I was made redundant from my previous job nearly two years ago and after being 6 months on the dole I was told due to my financial situation and the amount of savings I had, I was no longer entitled to any jobseeker's allowance and therefore no longer classed as unemployed, and not in any government figures. I bet there have been and still are hundreds of thousands in that boat. I wouldn't mind betting the real unemployment rate isn't that far off what it was under Thatcher. Back then you didn't get the press manipulation and figure spin you get now.

Going back on topic, I don't get these publicity stunts, they conform to the Jeremy Clarkson like bigoted opinonated population who describe them as "eco-mentalists". If they had an eye-catching stand and took part in informative discussion, I'd be 100 times more likely to take notice to what they were standing for.

Instead I travelled the world, serving my country and getting absolutely leathered when I could as well.

90% of University degrees are completely pointless, with only the specialised ones worth anything... as someone else said, hard work and determination will get you to the top... not some poxy degree ( in most cases ).

Still at the gym Stu or are you now an internet giant?

Because they are just being attention whores.

Err... I think that was the point. To get people's attention. And then to direct them to reason why they were coming together.

Personally, I think it's an excellent way to protest. Nobody takes the blindest bit of notice of banner wavers anymore, and this causes no disruption, it doesn't harm anyone, and it looks like it's a fun thing to do.

Well done those attention whores. :)

why are they protesting for....we are doing something about climate change

those flying to the world cup will have to pay £40 each way to pay for their "carbon footprint"..

what that £80 will do for climate change is another story.

... or a load of students with nothing better to do than cause a scene in the precinct on a Saurday afternoon?

You decide.

****in morons, I'd like to kill each and every one of the stupid student ****s.

So they protested about climate change by sit for hours in front of their PC on facebook (creating CO2) then made a pointless journey into town (creating more CO2) to highlight something that doesn't need highlighting because it's on the national media 24/7.

****ing attention seeking retards.
