Saint J 77 Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Great result today, the only thing that took the shine off today’s result for me was pompey getting an injury time goal to earn a them point But the main thing is a Saints win with Leeds up next, it’s going to be tough but I would not rule out a win with the confidents being high going into the game. Toomer Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Thought the ref had lost it in the first half and the way Rovers set out their stall in the first half it looked like they came for a draw. Second half we came out with more about us and took the game by the scruff on the neck, great strike from Harding and Lamberts free kick rolled back the years. Papa given off side a couple of times when through on goal and IMO and others around me he was on side both times as one came off a Rovers defender, all in all a good day at the office. gjphilsaint Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Again brilliant job from the Saints, just enjoying being happy on Sat afternoon. Only slight downer is we made no progress on 6th, thats what I always look for now. Still, I reckon if we could be between 6 and 8 points short by Jan 1st, we have a good chance of making the playoffs. Hold on.. in real terms our 3-0 win was the best result in the division today (along with bristol R) so we did make progress against all of the other teams even if just on GD gains and last week only hartlepool had a better win than we did... so all in all... progress continues!! Straws being clutched...? Not entirely!

Um Bongo Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Lambert's Free kick was just out of this world. Perfect view from the Northam, arrowed straight into the top right hand corner. Was a poor game, but if we can win 3-0 without getting out of first gear, shows what a good team we are becoming. Bart - Didn't have anything to do. 7/10 James - NOT A RIGHT BACK. Will get ripped apart next week. 6/10 Jaidi - Won everything in the air again. 7/10 Perry - Did well. 7/10 Harding - Great goal and did well defending. 8/10 Antonio - Should not be starting games. No touch and headless. 5/10 Hammond - Lots of running and tracking back. 7/10 Schniderlin - No wonder his passing rates are so good. Only goes backwards. Lucky not to have been sent off. 6/10 Lallana - Lots of effort, not much reward. 7/10 Conerlly - Worked his socks off. 8/10 Lambert - Worth every penny of the £1M. 9/10 MOTM. Some awful dives today, Antonio when he was 'kicked in the face' was amusing, as was the tranmere bloke we dived 5 seconds after Jaidi ran towards him. toofarnorth Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Awful first half, not helped by a useless referee. To be honest we didn't play massively better in the second but we managed to get the goals. Hardings goal was fantastic, but then the free kick from Rickie was just sublime. Thought we only really played with 10 men today as Antonio really was that bad!
Big_Bald_Si Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 I see Antonio has no votes in our poll. lol He had his worst game for a long time today. Much better as an impact player from the bench in my opinion

up and away Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 W00T!!! Missed the first 15 minutes because of queues at the flippin' ticket office. TBH though, I could have been an hour late into the ground and not missed any action. Great second half though. This had 0-0 or 0-1 written all over it at HT, but Saints are made from sterner stuff these days. Two candidates for goal of the season in a game I never thought I'd be able to get to. :D 'ave it!! Players: Bart - 8 No problems with having him in for Davis IMO. Dealt with everything that came his way expertly. Had one flap at a corner, but only because Jaidi got to it first. James - 6 Was decent enough by his standards. One horror backpass though. Jaidi - 7 Won a lot in the air, a few sliced clearances. Perry - 7 I don't think he's up to it against tougher opposition, but there was nothing wrong tonight. Harding - 8 Dealt with the long balls that came his way. Brilliant goal. Antonio - 7 Good running and made a lot of space. Hammond - 7 Got around the midfield well. Schneiderlin - 6 Seemed a bit quiet. A few quality crossfield balls. Guessing he got taken off because he was booked. Lallana - 7 Decent movement, worked well with Harding down the left. Connolly - 7 Everything is just so much better with him up front. He moves, he shoots, he passes, he scores. Lambert plays a lot better when Connolly plays. 4-4-2, it's the future. Lambert - 9 A decent strikers performance, but that free kick gives him the MOTM award on it's own. Worthy of Ronaldo in a World Cup final. Fantastic!!! Subs: Wotton - 7 Came on and was solid. Pretty reliable passing too. Waigo - 6 I didn't have the best view from the Kingsland North, but I could have sworn he was 3 yards onside for THAT chance. I think the lino panicked when their defender messed up and stuck his flag up in sympathy. Mellis - n/a Meh. P.S. Thankyou Tranmere for not bringing any strikers to this match. If other teams could be this generous, I'd much appreciate it. Just as well, this had all the hall marks of Brighton all over again. You can see the game plan teams are playing against us, pressurise the midfield and it will open up before you. Tranmere never had anyone who could take advantage so at the end of the day it ended up an easy win. Harding's goal went in and we looked a different team and so did Tranmere, end of story. Lambert's strikes were awesome, but Connolly is absolute class. Lallana is now doing a very solid job, maybe not so pleasing on the eye, but more effective overall. Bart now just about has it over Kelvin, just because of his height and reach. If this midfield turns up against Leeds, it will be Huddersfield all over again. If we gain control, Leeds could easily get the same fate.
Saintandy666 Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Brilliant second half today. Astonishing free kick from Lambert and a far from easy goal well taken by Harding who gets my man of the match today; really good defending as well as a good goal. I was impressed. These are the matches we need to come through if we want to get out of these league next season. The real test is next week though.
Lazlo78 Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Great 3-0 win from a difficult match. Sounded a bit like the Brighton game only this time we stood firm until half time where Pardew could reorganise the team... A much appreciated clean sheet gained... 3 points gained on Walsall, Swindon (+ Hartlepool) 2 points gained on Leeds, Norwich (+ Brentford, Yeovil) 0 points dropped on Charlton, Millwall, Bristol R., MK Dons, Huddersfield, Colchester (+ Southend, Carlisle)

Saints Warrior Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Two brilliant goals. And a good second half display, Bart is looking good also. We just need to keep the same week in week out. If we can add to the team in Jan then 6th really would be a target. All bottom 9 teams lost so only 14th but that will do.

corsacar saint Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Game of two halves, ran out easy winners in the end against another very poor side. I think we are well capable of getting at least a point at Leeds, however we need to start playing from the first minute[ not 50th , as in todays game], against the league leaders and best team in this league. CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 (edited) My ratings for Saints v Tranmere Rovers (3-0 home win) First half : Everyone (players/management/fans/officials) gets a 5 for turning out . Second half : Bart 6 - He did all he had to perfectly well , it'll be interesting to see how he copes under real pressure one day . L James 6 - I appreciate him standing in as a full back for the team but surely he's not the long term answer . R Jaidi 7.5 - I didn't see him make one significant mistake all game , a big strong brute of a CB that can play a bit as well . C Perry 6.5 - Steady Perry reads the game so well it can go along way towards compensating for his (age related) limitations . D Harding 7.5 MOTM - A fine defensive display was capped by a superb goal that changed the whole game . Smashing little player . M Antonio 6 - Worked his socks off but hardly got himself into the game today frankly . D Hammond 7 - The usual 'man sized' midfield performance from one of our very best players . M Schneiderlin 7 - Looking like a proper hard English style midfielder now , which I put down to following Hammond's (excellent) example . A Lallana 7 - Not at his very best today but still class , as fit as a butchers dog these days . D Connolly 6.5 - Was struggling to make much of an impact until a wonderfully insightful lay off set up the 1st gaol . R Lambert 7.5 - Hard working but like DC not having a great game until THAT wonder free kick - a privilege to witness . Substitutes : P Wotton 5 - Mr Invisible to me I must admit , he may be doing great thinks but I just can't see it . Papa 5 - He's offside so often because he's too quick for the officials half the time - has goals in him I reckon . J Mellis - Late sub . Conclusions : After a first half that was as dire a football game as I've seen for some time we eventually came out as easy winners once the game opened up after Dan the Man's fine opening goal . That gulf in class our better players process over the typical journeyman pro's smaller clubs such as Tranmere can field in this division proved decisive - as it was always likely to be . The play-offs are still just about 'doable' I suppose but only if we can avoid letting inferior teams sides such as Tranmere drag us down to their level for long periods again . Both Lambert's superb goal from a long range free kick and the crucial Harding/Connolly opener were absolutely first class and enlightened what would otherwise have been a extremely dull contest to be frank . Papa was offside when Bart kicked it. The flag went up when he went for the ball. The fact that it later came off a defender's head is irrelevant. The ref had lost it a bit in the first half but the players weren't helping. Fir play to him for giving Morgan a final warning and involving Hammond, Morgan was subbed soon after. I've been one of James' fiercest critics when he plays at right back but he wasn't too bad today. It's the first game in years when I haven't been staring at my stopwatch in stoppage time. And a clean sheet!
markr27 Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 The first half was dire, mirroring the Brighton game but thankfully without any goals conceded on this occasion. The countless efforts to time waste by the Tranmere players weren't that surprising, I'm sure one of their players went down and began to roll, but managed to stop when he realised close he was to the touchline! They needed a fast start second half and got it, and now under Pardew seem to be prepared to push on more for the second goal, rather than sit back in fear of getting done on the break but inviting pressure. Antonio just didn't seem to be at the races, but I guess that's too be expected from a player that is still very much hit or miss at the moment and is still learning. Lloyd James was competent at right back, but wasn't really tested today. Good to see Hammond taking responsiblity when Morgan was close to getting the red, so much better having a captain that see things AROUND him rather than in front of him. With Bart in goal, Saints playing tempo also seems to have improved, as he seems to have more confidence getting some momentum going quickly compared to Kelvin. Lambert's ball control and lay off play is fantastic though, he's always associated with scoring but he gives so much more to the team... top player! Clifford Nelson Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 First things first. We are in L1 and we won 3-0. Very good. And then some serious considerations: What happened with the fantastic football we produced in late September against Bristol and early October against Gillingham? I thought it was a sign of what we wanted to achieve, but it isn't there anymore. Instead there is a preponderence of head tennis and quick balls out of defence to the forward line. We have the players to take the ball down and pass it to feet, so why have we stopped doing it? The first goal tonight came from our only second decent attempt att playing the ball rather than launching it. I don't condemn the quick ball when something is on, but not all the time, eh? Mikhail Antonio showed again tonight why he dwelled for a long time in non-league football. If he were to have a future with us into the CCC and onwards he should at least be able to do the simple stuff well. Sadly he made no contribution tonight, no telliing passes or crosses and no successes against the Tranmere fullback. It was bad enought to border the embarassing. I really struggle to understand why a talent like Waigo sits on the bench for Antonio to perform like this. I've seen it all before, and his performance is not improving. There surely must be some other peculiar and unspoken reason why he keeps starting the games. I'm afraid that we are going backwards in footballing terms, sweat instead of skills, which is why Lallana, for instance, was failing to shine like we know he can. I'm somewhat worried that Leeds will take us apart. I hope I'm wrong, but please send Antonio back to Reading!!!

We're probably more effective now but obviously don't have the extra man in the middle to exploit teams. Our first goal was well worked after keeping the ball for a while. We've got it in us, just need a little bit more composure playing from defence, a centre half who can pass a bit alongside Jaidi would be perfect. eelpie Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 great result... we sounded very average in the first half and they sounded quite lively... I guess pards did his stuff at half time and we could have had 4 or 5... we are going up.. No, Saints weren't average, they were diabolical in the first half, and came onto the pitch looking like they wished they were still in bed. It must've been some office party! More miskicks, and wayward booting than I've seen for years. Their kicking (when they connected) was to anywhich way. Antonio was by far the worse culprit. They just weren't looking before they booted. Much worse than against Brighton, and Saints were lucky not to concede. AP looked pretty furious at times, scribbling notes on his pad. It must have been some half time rant!.

sfc6mufc3 Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Really no REALLY well done lads, great result today against another team in form (although in the bottom three). Our hardest test of the season next week and THIS match will sure how far we have come under AP. I'd settle for a point now with a win against Exeter before a tough match against Colchester to come. Sounds like Lambert scored a screamer and IS the country's top goal scorer across all 4 leagues no? Looking at the table we are the second highest scoring team AWAY from home so that is something to take inot next week. Great run...........good times again. derry Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 This was another of those essential ugly wins, like Wycombe but worse, we got away with it and collected another three points. The lack of width was appalling and the fundamental reason we played poorly. The only move with any passing and width led to Harding's goal. Antonio was poor, played far too narrow, positional play was amateurish, control non existent, pace was completely negated by his poor positioning. He gave us no width and by coming into the middle played into the defence's hands. Lallana after 5 games of proper footballing, back to a narrow, cameo, non productive performance that again played into the defence's hands. James is a liability at right back, the lad means well but that is not good enough. Against quicker opponents he will be our achilles heel. Bialkowski isn't a bad keeper and I feel more comfortable with him there. The rest of the players were decent without playing well but I think that had more to do with the narrow way we played, allowing the defence and midfield to compact and deny us the space and stopping us passing and moving. One goal from play, hardly a shot of note, plus a penalty and a direct free kick summed it up, it could easily have been another 1-0 ugly win. The best thing is the ability to scrape a win out of a poor performance but I really did expect us to play better football against the bottom side. I felt sorry for Waigo feeding off scraps and Mellis doesn't look at all convincing when he came on. Wotton was, well Wotton! Although Pardew dodged the question when asked about potential transfers we need four or five more decent players.

shurlock Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Great result but we were frankly garbage in the 1st half and not that much better in the second. If we retain the ball as poorly as we did today against Leeds, we'll get spanked. And this was not the first time. I can find 17 teams worse than us in this division -thats easy- but whether we are good enough to kick on is doubtful. Certainly we're no way as good as our form suggests - but given its early days in the new regime maybe that's to be expected.

Yup - was impressed with Tranmere the first half the way they came to spoil the game. They marked tight and I was seriously worried about the 2nd half. However, we continued to run around and eventually they slipped up to allow Hammond to score and they looked shattered from then on. After the match the girlfriend said "I knew we were going to win when that first goal went in". I had to remind her that she's a Saints supporter and we just don't say things like that ! However, I knew I felt the same as well, today was going to be our day and the real turning point in the season (backed up by an emphatic win against Norwich on Tuesday night). Second half we also played wide (specially in the last half of the 2nd half) - stretched Tranmere, need more of that please. On a fantastic high tonight. Only area for improvement is James - someone shoot him please. Sorry but I truely hope that's the last time I see him play at St Mary's. AP is playing an extremely dangerous game putting him in that position. Anyhow, great game, great result, great position in the league (come on, at the start of the season we were glad to a. have a team and b. try to end up mid-table and build on the team for promotion next season). Good crowd today - the 'Papa is always offside' was good and was a great Markus song. When we sang 'Pardew Pardew give us a wave' was impressed the speed he responded. And finally, last 10 mins when OWTS started off slow - lump in the throat time, looks like we're getting back to 'the good ol' days' ! COYR. Lallana after 5 games of proper footballing, back to a narrow, cameo, non productive performance that again played into the defence's hands. derry do you ever stop prattling on about width? There was absolutely nothing wrong with either Antonio or Lallana's positional play. Neither came inside. Antonio had a poor game, but his pace was nullified by Bakayogos pace not his positional play. Lallana didn't come narrow at all. He failed to have an impact simply because we never passed to him. He saw absolutely nothing of the ball and spent a lot of energy keeping the terrific Shaleum Logan under wraps when he overlapped. I wish you'd stop moaning about him coming inside. When he does drift in it is often to our benefit anyway. Our failure to shine today was because our widemen were nullified by Tranmere. The opposition deserve credit for this. You won't see a better right back all season. The left back wasn't bad either.

countysaint Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 great result, didn't sound like the best first half, but we came out with much more drive in the 2nd and our class showed in the end. 3 more goals, 2 more for lambert. It's great, we're so free scoring at the moment. Cannot wait for the Leeds game next weekend, time to show the league what we're all about. If we play like we did today, then next week will end in tears for sure. We huffed and puffed our way through Tranmere until we got the breakthrough. We cannot afford to do the same at Leeds. Whilst I was extatic at the final whistle, I didnt feel we played that well today. All that said, the referee was real pants today and made the game worse for all his petty little descisions that he could have allowed to go and let the game flow a bit. (Tin hat at the ready now!) Chez Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 and Mellis doesn't look at all convincing when he came on. Not sure how you came to that conclusion based on those 7 minutes. He hardly touched the ball and when he did he kept posession. Where do you sit, cos you see a bloody different game from me.

I'd agree with that but with the caveat that Leeds won't park the bus as Tranmere attempted to do.
Chez Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Corky Morris and I said the exact same thing during the second half. Logan would be my number one target. Extremely impressed by him,but City aren't going to let him go.
suewhistle Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 For those interested can I just say that going to an after party where 85% of the ladies present are happy to let it be known that they bat for the other side really is weird, especially when the DJ played I kissed a girl... trying to find the defibrillator for the suddenly dodgy ticker after watching them dance to that..... S******.(or as I recall this board has stupid American software [half suppressed laugh OED])... whatever your preferences it's easy to wind you lot up! Personally I wouldn't want to be dogmatic about who I fancied as my basic requirement is intelligence and I've learnt in life never to say never... It helps if they're not Pompey fans though!!
