Saint Samuel Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 The Echo is a mess of a paper. Just one example - Normal to have sports on the back 4 or 5 pages but what idiot thinks its a good idea to have the TV and Radio guide in the middle of that section? I think thats a practice used by every newspaper owned by Newsquest, I know the Bradford T & A do the same.
Matthew Le God Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 Wrong again. MB lifted the link from somewhere else, he didn't "notice" them. Repeating the same fiction over and over again doesn't eventually make it become fact. He posted them just before 11am on 7th December. Can you find an article on the internet written about it before then?
The9 Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 lol! He'll only blow it on Guinness. Hopefully some of it on me, that was kinda the point.
Matthew Le God Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 (edited) Erm... they were published on Nov 25th. I just had a quick look and put 19th as that is when the club sent them to the council. Ok that may be wrong. But it is irrelevant whether it is the 19th or 25th, the point is it was a long gap to December 7th and anyone publishing the story. Thus not an exclusive and didn't matter if the Echo waited a day. Minty Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 He posted them just before 11am on 7th December. Can you find an article on the internet written about it before then? Jeez, does it really need all this in depth analysis?! Simple facts are that MB noticed this post: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A60412934 on 606, and then posted it on here. It is simply coincidence that it was noticed by that person, at that time, and that it took that long between them being published on the 25th Nov, and being noticed by a fan who then posted the link on 7th Dec on 606. Fan The Flames Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 Everything I just said in that bit you quoted is fact. Which bits aren't? You are clearly trying to be obtuse. You don’t know anymore than a couple of dates, when the plans were published, when it was mentioned on here and when the echo mentioned them. You could choose from those facts to see the story your way or your could accept that there may be a little bit more to it that this simplistic reading of events. In my experience things are normally slightly more complex than the simplistic version.

Matthew Le God Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A60412934 That was where MB got it from. Ok maybe he did, but still not a professional article dated before that point. Echo had from 25th November until 7th December to run the story. However they just happened to run it the day after it breaks on 606 and Saints web. Members on Echo sports team likely to have read it on here as some are members. If I was an Echo sports reporter when the multi-million pound takeover from a billionaire takeover happened I would have had a 10 SECOND check every morning or at least once a week at the planning section of the councils that covered the training ground(New Forest District Council) and stadium(Southampton City Council) for any planned developments. Just put the Southampton FC sites as favourites and check them every so often for any plans. Would be sad if you weren't paid to, but as a journalist a chance of an exclusive was missed and only made the Echo over a week after it first appeared on the New Forrest councils website. All could have been done for only 10 seconds work a day or maybe a week.

If anybody should be checking planning applications it is the newsdesk.

Just as well you're not in charge at the Echo really, they'd have gone bust years ago with time and task management like that.
OldNick Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 Reading through a lot of these posts is depressing reading. It is sad that on this straw poll how low the Echo has sunk. Time for some PR from them to get people back on board. It would be a sad day if we had no southampton newspaper.
Matthew Le God Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 Worth closing this thread as it is the smaller of the two? Both are basically discussing the same thing and two threads is diluting it.

I agree but the standard of reporting in the Echo, in relation to what it was 5 (or so) years ago, is very poor. In this day and age, where information is so readily available on the net and through other media, local newspapers need to really step up to the mark, in order to survive. Unfortunately, the Echo falls way short and Murray has to take the lions share of the blame for that.

Redondo Saint Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 I always buy the Echo when I am back in Blighty, for the local news, heritage section and non league footy. They do a pretty good job on the whole. However, I do think since Ian Murray became editor it has lost identity and believes it is way too important and influential than it really is. Ever since Murray and Lowe fell out, the Echo stirred trouble between fans and the club in a cynical attempt to sell more papers - in my opinion. Murray and Lowe are very similar in letting their egos get in the way of making good decisions. What other local paper has several pictures of its editor in every publication? What other football club chairman had his own initials on his tracksuit?!! This latest episode highlights again, Murray's ego and desperation at the expense of a good working relationship with the city's football club.
