Master Bates Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 (edited) Nicola Cortese has banned the Daily Echo from St Mary's. The Echo wanted to run a story RE the Staplewood Development as it was already in the public domain (this forum, BBC, Sky), however Cortese wished to keep it underwraps. The Echo decided to print what information they had. The following day the bomb was dropped, Cortese decided to ban the Echo from covering Saints unless a meeting could be arranged. This didn't happen. The Echo were also banned from taking pictures of the annual Christmas visit by Saints players to Southampton General Hospital. The Echo say how Lowe would never have done this and.............. "When this tiff will end I cannot say. But of one thing I am certain. That if a certain Mr Lowe finds the time while writing his lists to Santa to read this article he will manage a deep chuckle." With the last 3 words being............ "Merry Christmas, Rupert". Buy the Echo today, page 16. I guess The Pink will no longer continue. Edited 11 December, 2009 by Master Bates
Toadhall Saint Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 See where impatience gets you eh? Press conf was called but no, the Echo has to "spill the beans" for the sake of what? Thought it was strange that a PC was called but all the news was reported the day before the PC.
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 I couldn't give a ****! If I had to choose between Cortese and the Echo, I know who I would go for!
Glasgow_Saint Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 I couldn't give a ****! If I had to choose between Cortese and the Echo, I know who I would go for! Me too the echo rocks! who the hell doers Cortese think he is huh
slickmick Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 Bit confused by this. If it was public knowledge before the Echo ran the story, then why try and keep it underwraps ?
MusicMan Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 It’s not the first time something like this has happened. Echo staff can come on very friendly to SFC staff to try and get info from them. Staff are warned about friendly members of the press.
CB Fry Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 (edited) It’s not the first time something like this has happened. Echo staff can come on very friendly to SFC staff to try and get info from them. Staff are warned about friendly members of the press. Diddums. Whereas some chump on here with a bit of "inside info" is lauded as a hero. If people didn't want inside information on their football club, there would be no need for sites like this for a start. Do you really want all your Saints news spoon fed to you via official, generic, anodyne diktats from the official site? This is a worrying and unnessesary development and should be reversed immediately. Edited 11 December, 2009 by CB Fry
Badger Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 Nicola Cortese has banned the Daily Echo from St Mary's. The Echo were also banned from taking pictures of the annual Christmas visit by Saints players to Southampton General Hospital. The Echo say how Lowe would never have done it with the last 3 words being...... "Merry Christmas, Rupert".Buy the Echo today, page 16. I guess The Pink will no longer continue. This is a shame, with no one really benefitting from the outcome.Hardly a major scoop for the Echo and as the news was out there already there was no real breach of confidence or damage done to the club. The publicity from the hospital visit would have generated some goodwill locally and Saints have been denied the free publicity. The Echo need interest in the Saints to keep going to sell their paper. Unfortunately trust has gone on both sides and it does seem a bit of a 'dummy spit' by the club. The last bit though is ridiculous as the Echo enjoyed their part in the hate campaign at the end of Rupert's tenure(s).
rallyboy Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 The info was in the public domain as a planning application so I can see why they went with it, I can also see why Nicola wasn't happy. Let's not turn into Pompey and ban the local paper every three games over nowt - the News wrote that a game was poor and are still banned.... Whatever we think and I know who who I would chose as well, both parties need each other so sit down and have a chat, it can be sorted in 5mins. Storm in one of those little thimbles that they drink coffee out of in Italy.
Legod Third Coming Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 The truth is no one buys newspapers any more, or if they do it won't be for long.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 A storm in a tea cup probably but it's in both parties interest to ensure that a good working relationship is maintained . Falling out with the local press over a minor issue such as this just might be the first mistake we've seen from our new chairman . Never mind I'm sure they'll kiss and make up before very long .
Wes Tender Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 Nicola Cortese has banned the Daily Echo from St Mary's. The Echo say how Lowe would never have done it with the last 3 words being...... "Merry Christmas, Rupert". Buy the Echo today, page 16. I guess The Pink will no longer continue. I'm pretty impressed at how the Echo knew Rupert so well that they could predict with such certainty how he might have handled things. Shame he didn't have such a cosy relationship with the BBC, because he threw his rattle out of the pram with them. I take this as being a shot over the Echo's bows by Cortese and a good thing too. The Echo have much more to lose by not having a good relationship with the club and if they choose to antagonise the chief executive, then they will think twice the next time. I'm sure that the two parties will have a discussion about it soon and some ground rules will be laid down so it doesn't happen again.
Toadhall Saint Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 Where does the Echo get off comparing he who shall not be named with the current incumbents? If it wasn't for NC/ML the bloody echo reporters would be stood on the Common with a flask of bovril.
JustMike Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 the echo is a pile of crap made up of re-hashed stories where thier main source is this forum!
Master Bates Posted 11 December, 2009 Author Posted 11 December, 2009 I missed this bit: "When this tiff will end I cannot say. But of one thing I am certain. That if a certain Mr Lowe finds the time while writing his lists to Santa to read this article he will manage a deep chuckle."
John B Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 (edited) Nicola Cortose is being a prize banker:D If true seems childish and vindictive similar to how Lowe was perceived Edited 11 December, 2009 by John B
once_bitterne Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 Very odd! Firstly this seems at odds with Cortese's charm offensive but also I can't think for a second how NC thought he could really keep news of the Staplewood redevelopment underwraps! The planning application and full plans to go with it were posted on the internet last week and were completely in the public domain days before the Echo printed the story.....
John B Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 The truth is no one buys newspapers any more, or if they do it won't be for long. People do buy newspapers these days though in not so large numbers as before but the Echo does have a Website if you did not realise where people like me who no longer live in Southampton can read the news
Minty Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 There's several parts to this. 1 - The actual 'story'... well as discussed on here, the planning application is in the public domain, and so there is absolutely no reason why the Echo shouldn't publish it. The club could've worked with the Echo and said something like 'OK, publish a small teaser first, but please hold off with the details and we'll give you some in depth content to print in return.' It's all about dialogue. 2 -The Lowe comment is just ridiculous, petty crap which helps nothing or no one, except making the Echo look like a spoilt child spitting out it's dummy. 3 - The whole issue is, in the great scheme of things, not really that important and I'm nto gonna lose any sleep over it.
Hatch Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 The Daily Echo could cease to exist and I wouldn't even notice.
Saint_clark Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 I think there is more to this than meets the eye. As people have said, it was already in the public domain - have they banned the Beeb as well? Nope...
Panda Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 There are two sides to every story - we have heard the Echo's version but not NC's. There is more to this than we can understand but there is obviously a problem here that needs sorting and I am sure the will when the posturing ends. I don't think the Echo have done themselves any favours frankly, their relationship with the club has been strained for many years. I guess the Echo needs to Saints more than the other way round these days and if they want the fast track to breaking news to help them sell their rag then they need to respect the clubs wishes when asked. If they don't then they get what they deserve!
jam Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 See where impatience gets you eh? Press conf was called but no, the Echo has to "spill the beans" for the sake of what? Thought it was strange that a PC was called but all the news was reported the day before the PC. Are you seriously having a moan because the local newspaper has printed a news story at the point when it was news as opposed to when it happened to suit another local business? We've had a few threads on here saying the echo doesn't report news properly any more and when they do people get on there case for that...
Scummer Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 I can't think for a second how NC thought he could really keep news of the Staplewood redevelopment underwraps! But they weren't trying to keep it under wraps. They'd already scheduled a press conference for the following day to give the details. It seems they are annoyed that, having gone to the effort of setting up a press conference, the Echo decided they couldn't wait 24 hours. After all, the Echo would be the main people any press conference was being held for.
jam Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 People do buy newspapers these days though in not so large numbers as before but the Echo does have a Website if you did not realise where people like me who no longer live in Southampton can read the news I've not heard of a single newspaper that makes an income from their website. No paper - no website.
madsent Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 The Daily Echo could cease to exist and I wouldn't even notice. My sentiments exactly. For a local paper, they seem to show no allegiance at all to their local club. Their match reports are appalling and often have no information at all about the match itself. Also, I can't remember the last time the Echo actually printed something positive about Saints.
Matthew Le Tissier Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 its pathetic. saints need the echo as much as the echo needs saints. why on earth would you want this story kept a secret from the fans? Bit confused by this. If it was public knowledge before the Echo ran the story, then why try and keep it underwraps ?
Saint_clark Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 its pathetic. saints need the echo as much as the echo needs saints. why on earth would you want this story kept a secret from the fans? He'd scheduled a press conference, do you really think he was trying to keep it a secret? Is this the start of "Cortese out"?
dronskisaint Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 NC & ML saved Southampton Football Club - where was the Echo then? It shows a lack of respect not to work with the release of good news in conjunction with the bringers of the same - yes the planning application made it within the public domain but if they were requested to cooperate & didn't (we're not talking about hiding tax dodging, bungs etc - this is good news all round) then they should expect the same in return - i.e. the ban. 100% applaud the action - they were asked to respect a request, they declined - now they should go out & buy their match ticket!
Matthew Le Tissier Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 He'd scheduled a press conference, do you really think he was trying to keep it a secret? Is this the start of "Cortese out"? no way he is part of the best thing that has happened to us in years. However. just curious?? why all the fuss if its no secret?
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 (edited) As Master Bates created a thread on here re the planning application before the news conference, in order NC is seen to be consistent, he too should be banned from St Marys !!!!! The Echo need SFC more, so suggest they swallow, apologise for stealing their thunder and move on Edited 11 December, 2009 by INFLUENCED.COM
Saint_clark Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 no way he is part of the best thing that has happened to us in years. However. just curious?? why all the fuss if its no secret? Because Cortese went to the trouble of organising a press conference which was rendered pointless by the echos article.
Saint Richard of Woolston Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 The Echo has been a very poor 'red top' for some time, desperately trying to get the scoop and sensationalise everything. Peter East, Bob Brunskell, Johnnie May - a football following turns its lonely eyes to you. That said, the apparent action by the Club is very strange indeed. I cannot help but think there is more to it. I think the Lowe comment by the rag in question may be their attempt at irony in all fairness - there was certainly no love lost between Rupey and Echo Towers.
Matthew Le Tissier Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 Because Cortese went to the trouble of organising a press conference which was rendered pointless by the echos article. i dont think so, everyone knows to take what the echo prints with a pinch of salt and a press confrence would be straight from the horses mouth The echo run storys on player signings, managers and take over storys etc, however the club shouldnt then deem a press confrence pointlless as the echo has already told the story? or part of the story. Once again Who actualy cares? Maybe you should tell the echo. i have started a topic for you so they can take all your advise onboard
Saint_clark Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 i dont think so, everyone knows to take what the echo prints with a pinch of salt and a press confrence would be straight from the horses mouth The echo run storys on player signings, managers and take over storys etc, however the club shouldnt then deem a press confrence pointlless as the echo has already told the story? or part of the story. Al de Man Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 The Echo say how Lowe would never have done this and.............. This is complete and utter bs. The Echo knew full well that Lowe would have been more than happy to ban them from the Dell and SMS, so the reporters kept their noses very clean because if they were banned, they were as good as out of their job. Once the new administration came in, the Echo saw them as a soft touch. They're playing a game of brinkmanship seeing just how far they can push their luck. It happens in football all the time. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/broadcasting/news/a187050/sir-alex-ferguson-forced-to-end-bbc-ban.html

I don't know about printing but on the Saints page on the echo website there are the following rather positive stories all published this week: http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/4782013.Saints_building_for_the_future/ http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/4786454.Lambert_on_course_to_join_the_most_illustrious_of_Saints_lists/ http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/4789234.Saints_could_burst_into_top_half/.

Matthew Le Tissier Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 But the echo is still the main outlet of Saints news - it is pointless calling a press conference for a story they have already run. so when the echo run a story on lets say the takeover, saying who has purchased the club before the club anounce it? (as they did). Was it then pointless to have the press confrence with the new owners.
krissyboy31 Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 I wonder if it was more about publishing part of the document (and pictures) itself, than just breaking the story? The club had obviously spent a deal of time and money, putting together the presentation and model for the PC and therefore, I guess, the pictures (although in the public domain) were copyright of the club and designers until permissions to publish was given.

Plus, let's not forget that Cortese asked them not to publish for another day (one day FFS) and they still went ahead and published.

Thats me done on this subject now as ive wasted far to much of my life talking about it.

I suspect The Echo will have been issued pictures and details with came with an embargo date that they broke.
OldNick Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 I havent read the echo's piece, but if they have published a story about the spat, then I suggest there is a big rift. The Echo's influence is minor to what it was and so they, I believe are the losers in the long run.
ART Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 Certainly shows what someone previous noted of Nicolas Cortese's lack of patience and I suppose tolerance. Could provide answers for how Andrew Oldknow was so quick to leave a few weeks back. I just hope Pardieu continues to produce the results. We may see Rupert Lowe one day considered slow in management changes in comparison to Cortese.

I was told that allegedly WGS turned down the director of football role due to Oldknow being at the club, so I suggest his departure was not a surprise to me.
