JustMike Posted 10 December, 2009 Share Posted 10 December, 2009 (edited) Arizona, Pardew may well buy a right back in January. However James is more than good enough to cover Murty for 6 weeks. When Murty is back he will do a great job in this league. He may well get injured again but then James/Thomas can fill in again. If however we do sign a new right back in January that would mean we are potentially paying Murty's wage (which for League One will be high) and also the new right back who will want to be starting. No point imo when we have 3 right backs more than good enough already to get promotion. Better to save the cash and wait until we are in the Championship and then buy a new right back. In January the priority should be a new striker to cover Lambert/Connolly, a centre back and perhaps a defensive midfielder to replace Wotton/give James competition when Saints play 451. sorry dont agree, James is awful at RB and after his efforts at RW would rather he stayed there. Thomas doesnt stay fit long enough either. We need a RB in January Edited 10 December, 2009 by JustMike
Andy_Porter Posted 10 December, 2009 Share Posted 10 December, 2009 Thomas did a good job at Stockport earlier in the season, and even made some great overlaps but having said that Stockport were dire and of little threat going wide. Also with Thommo in the full back position against a nippy winger you'd get the feeling that a penalty is in the post  I wasn't really impressed with Thomas at Stockport, he gets down the line well enough but his crossing isn't really up to scratch. Maybe Thomas with James in front is worth a try.
Whitey Grandad Posted 10 December, 2009 Share Posted 10 December, 2009 The more we discuss this the worse it looks. Emergency right-back purchase in January it is then.

James has cost us whilst playing at RB, there is no getting away from it. And we can't keep saying "he will do a job until Murty gets back", as on the evidence Murty will not be fit often enough. derry Posted 10 December, 2009 Share Posted 10 December, 2009 I know James for once had a decent game but what did he create. Schneiderlin's pass for Connolly, a through ball for Lambert and a deflected Connolly shot for Hammond. Waigo has to play wide right if he is fit. Thomas is a better defender than James. I think Pardew prefers James but he is on borrowed time, the more players we bring in the less he will fill in. His lack of pace is the big impediment for me. We need more pace and dynamism not less. We got away with James wide right at Walsall but we need Waigo's pace.

Glasgow_Saint Posted 10 December, 2009 Share Posted 10 December, 2009 I got a question: WTF is Pardew doing signing injury prone players like Murty!? He's asking for trouble!!
derry Posted 10 December, 2009 Share Posted 10 December, 2009 James created the first goal. And was MOTM. I've just checked the replays, the Echo and newspapers all said Schneiderlin. It was James played the ball down the line but hardly MOTM. Connolly- first goal - individual, second goal dribble and shot deflected to give Hammond an open goal then a beautiful through ball for Lambert to score and James MOTM- no way. Maybe Thomas with James in front is worth a try. Thomas played a home game at right back and I felt he did very well. A bit annoying as I'd slated him as a right back a couple of day previous... He gives is a bit more height too. On the other side he is nowhere near as good as Murty or James going forward.
Charlie Wayman Posted 10 December, 2009 Share Posted 10 December, 2009 Not Wotton, he would be a disaster. His tackling is never anything other than full-on and desperate so we concede a penalty or two every week. Also he's slow so left wingers would have a field day waltzing around him at speed. Chez Posted 10 December, 2009 Share Posted 10 December, 2009 (edited) James created the first goal. And was MOTM. he created the goal, but Connelly was MOTM for me by miles and I never give MOTM to strikers. As for losing Murty I don't think it is a huge loss. He has failed to impress me. His performance on Saturday was appauling. We need a pacey full back IMO. We have more than enough `solid' defenders in Harding, Jardi, Perry...we need a classy, ball playing pacey fullback. Neil Eardley was the one we should have got but the bungled takeover put pay to that. Edited 10 December, 2009 by Chez

dannysfc Posted 10 December, 2009 Share Posted 10 December, 2009 I'm starting to feel really sorry for Murty as I think that he has done solidly in the RB position and hadn't he already been injured before he came back because if he did then he is quite unlucky but there we go! Fingers crossed that LJ can do a decent job at RB but it would be Good to bring in a decent RB whose got the experience and quality that we need sooo bring on january as we need to spend spend spend! So if you get to that date without having had 5 you won't get a yellow card suspension until you get 10. Thanks! I miss the old points system which no one seemed to really understand. Thanks! I miss the old points system which no one seemed to really understand. No problem. The other change for this season is that the suspension takes immediate effect instead of the previous seven day delay. There's no appeal for a yellow card anyway. I've been trying to find the dates for 10 and 15 but I can't see them on the FA site. I looked into this a couple of months ago and found a few newspaper references but all I can find now are obscure links to the 'Football League of West Wales' and suchlike. I shall persevere, I never give up.
St Landrew Posted 10 December, 2009 Share Posted 10 December, 2009 Where does Voltz play - isnt he out of contract. Or what about Darren Kenton? I've changed my mind. James is fantastic. Yes indeed. Please someone remind me what the plusses were in signing Darren Kenton a few years back. And I don't want to see the one word - COVER.

Whitey Grandad Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 I've just found this on the Southend site. http://www.shrimperzone.com/vb/showthread.php?p=1062496 go to post #15 so... 10 before the second Sunday in April is a two match ban. 15 cards in a season and it's a three-match ban. FTCM is First team Competitive Matches, I presume. (I find this 'Shrimpers' thing confusing because my father played for Harwich & Parkestone FC and they were called The Shrimpers.) Arizona Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 To put it simply. Neither Murty, James nor Thomas is the answer at right back. Murty - Too old, to many injuries. James - Too slow, doesn't jump, bad positioning, makes mistakes, doesn't jump... there's more but you get the idea. Thomas - Slow and can't cross. If we are serious about the CCC and beyond, we need conclusive answers in each possition. At RB it's more a case of, "well, erm... he'll do for now and this bloke's always injured." rooney Posted 11 December, 2009 Share Posted 11 December, 2009 With our back 4 generally lacking pace, a fast younger right back seems to be essential in the January transfer window now. Sadly, I think Murts will be plagued by injuries in his twilight years, just as Marion and Michael Svennsson were.

Sadly, I think Murts will be plagued by injuries in his twilight years, just as Marion and Michael Svennsson were. Apparently we've recalled Ryan Tafazolli from Salisbury as cover. Not sure that a 6'5 centre-back is a like-for-like replacement though. I'm also perplexed that we've allowed Salisbury to retain his registration. Until we can get a replacement in I'd prefer Wayne Thomas to play RB and allow Lloyd James to carry on in midfield or on the wing. I think Thomas is more reliable at defending than James who is actually doing pretty well further forward.
L1Minus10 Posted 12 December, 2009 Share Posted 12 December, 2009 Thommo at RB for me. Why move James when the team has looked good with him at RM. Thommo may be a shocker at RB but he's done ok so far. James IMO is always a shocker at RB whenever the opposition get the ball.
