Thedelldays Posted 9 December, 2009 Posted 9 December, 2009 was having a think, over the last few years some real top quality stuff has come from the US.... 24 Prison Break (season 1) The Unit Have to say, IMO the very best are.... 1. The Wire 2. Band of Brothers 3. The Sopranos
Master Bates Posted 9 December, 2009 Posted 9 December, 2009 Some of these http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=1887&highlight=shows
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 9 December, 2009 Posted 9 December, 2009 If we're talking about recent/current programs then I'd say 'Dexter' is the finest series to emerge from the USA for some time - if you like to walk on the dark side anyway . A longer term view may well conclude the 'Star Trek' in all it's many manifestations has been both the longest lasting and quite probably the most influential TV series ever produced . Gene Roddenberry = Genius .
RedAndWhite91 Posted 9 December, 2009 Posted 9 December, 2009 At the moment, True Blood is pretty good. Lost and Heroes are firm favourites of mine. Family Guy and American Dad obviously, but don't know if you can class these as series'. Band Of Brothers is the best television ever made.
hypochondriac Posted 9 December, 2009 Posted 9 December, 2009 Frasier and currently Dexter have to be considered. Top notch.
swannymere Posted 9 December, 2009 Posted 9 December, 2009 The Wire walks it by a country mile and even though the critics hated it Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip had the potential to be great.
LVSaint Posted 10 December, 2009 Posted 10 December, 2009 I will find out how good The Wire is this xmas. Lost, Curb, South Park, Family Guy, Dexter, Twin Peaks, etc.. American TV is certainly enjoying a 'golden era' right now, but there's an awful lot of crap being produced too - Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Bones, CSI Miami, Medium, Ghost Whisperer, as well as the multitude of reality/talent pap (all spawn from the UK sadly)....

The wire is without a doubt the greatest TV production to come out of the US...with the Band of Brothers a close second you simy have to watch all 5 seasons the reason why it got mixed views from the states as the series highlights the very things wrong with American society. Brilliant
Nexstar Posted 10 December, 2009 Posted 10 December, 2009 Haven't seen The Wire but Band of Brothers was great, along with the first and second series' of Prison Break (tailed off after that). 24 was very good but really has outstayed its welcome, i'll continue to watch it though. As someone above mentioned Studio 60 was a good watched as well.
miserableoldgit Posted 10 December, 2009 Posted 10 December, 2009 Whilst I totally agree with everything that`s been said about "Band of Brothers", around this time last year the HBO series "John Adams" was being shown. It a staggering peice of television starring Paul Giamatti as the second President of the US and told his story from just before the Revolution to his death. IMHO a masterpeice and well worth catching up with. http://www.amazon.co.uk/John-Adams-Complete-HBO-DVD/dp/B0017I1GAC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1260436950&sr=8-1 I love "Two and a Half Men". Always maintains a high laugh per episode ratio, and I also currently enjoy "30 Rock". Am I the only one who fancies Tina Fey something rotten??
jeff leopard Posted 10 December, 2009 Posted 10 December, 2009 Damn my eyes but I'm going to swerve off-topic very briefly as there isn't a general TV shows/dvd boxsets thread that covers British TV shows. I just finished I Claudius, the BBC epic from 1976 (a good year) all about several generations of sex, drugs and baby-killing obsessed Roman emporers. Absolutely brilliant stuff with an all star cast - a young and unbearded Brian Blessed as Augustus, John Hurt as Caligula, Patrick Stewart as a wonderfully evil head of security/thought control, Christopher Biggins as Nero (!) and Derek Jacobi as Claudius, all in sublime form. The perfect tale of absolute power with lashings of blood, nudity and incest, what more can you want?

A genuine classic and exactly the kind of thing we can't seem to produce in Britain anymore always used to watch it when I was sick and off school. Messalina ftw!

Family Guy and American Dad obviously, but don't know if you can class these as series'. Band Of Brothers is the best television ever made. Season two is even better.
Saint_Jonny Posted 10 December, 2009 Posted 10 December, 2009 24, family guy and the wrongly criticised Star Trek : Enterprise
Johnny Shearer Posted 10 December, 2009 Posted 10 December, 2009 I will find out how good The Wire is this xmas. Lost, Curb, South Park, Family Guy, Dexter, Twin Peaks, etc.. Is not crap. Good show actually. The Wire.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 10 December, 2009 Posted 10 December, 2009 The Cosby Show. I like it when Theo does something wrong and Clifford forgives him as he's learned a lesson. Then Clifford does a funny voice or dance and Rudi rolls her eyes at him. Brilliant!

Block 5 Posted 10 December, 2009 Posted 10 December, 2009 You made this joke on the old 'US shows' thread. Whatcha talkin bout Willis?
LVSaint Posted 10 December, 2009 Posted 10 December, 2009 Is not crap. Good show actually. The Wire. Bones is not the worst offender but the scripting is **** poor and characters are real turds IMO. The Kathy Reichs books that the series is based on are nothing like it.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 You made this joke on the old 'US shows' thread. It isn't a joke. I don't call your posts on the music thread jokes so extend me the same courtesy please, Dippo.
Seany S Posted 11 December, 2009 Posted 11 December, 2009 I know it has finished now, and I am sure I have mentioned it on here elsewhere, but The Shield was amazing. The way they ramp up the tension over seven seasons without it going stale or getting ridiculous like Lost is an incredible achievement.

I do like Lost but it has become a little ridiculous, even for me.
saint_stevo Posted 12 December, 2009 Posted 12 December, 2009 Dexter True Blood Season 1- Prison Break
manji Posted 12 December, 2009 Posted 12 December, 2009 Obvious I know but The Wire is the best but I am re-watching The whole series of Deadwood and that isnt far off the standard of The Wire.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 12 December, 2009 Posted 12 December, 2009 Eerie, Indiana Boy Meets World Blossom Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place
Block 5 Posted 12 December, 2009 Posted 12 December, 2009 Eerie, Indiana Good series. Is this being re-run anywhere?
sotonjoe Posted 12 December, 2009 Posted 12 December, 2009 I love "Two and a Half Men". Always maintains a high laugh per episode ratio, and I also currently enjoy "30 Rock". Am I the only one who fancies Tina Fey something rotten?? Two and a Half Men is awesome and is reportedly netting Charlie Sheen approximately £13million per year. For more serious stuff, The Sopranos certainly knocked the socks off The Wire.
swannymere Posted 12 December, 2009 Posted 12 December, 2009 The Sopranos certainly knocked the socks off The Wire. You're wrong, but thanks for your opinion.
saint_stevo Posted 12 December, 2009 Posted 12 December, 2009 LOOOOOOOVE 2 and a Half men. Less so since Jake grew up
Deppo Posted 13 December, 2009 Posted 13 December, 2009 Obvious I know but The Wire is the best but I am re-watching The whole series of Deadwood and that isnt far off the standard of The Wire. Just about to start this.
sadoldgit Posted 13 December, 2009 Posted 13 December, 2009 The Sopranos - awesome as is Californication.
Big John Posted 13 December, 2009 Posted 13 December, 2009 The High Chaparal (sp) and Bonanza both brilliant documentaries on American history.
REDARMY79 Posted 13 December, 2009 Posted 13 December, 2009 Reaper Curb Your Enthusiasm Without A Trace Saved By The Bell
Lord Duckhunter Posted 13 December, 2009 Posted 13 December, 2009 1. NYPD Blue 2.Curb your Enthusiasm 3.Frasier Can anyone remember the name of a series about 15 years ago, set in the deep South. Which dealt with the racial issues of the late 50's/60's. It was pretty good, had the bloke from Law and Order in it. I can't for the life of me remember the name of it.
jeff leopard Posted 13 December, 2009 Posted 13 December, 2009 Obvious I know but The Wire is the best but I am re-watching The whole series of Deadwood and that isnt far off the standard of The Wire. Deadwood is ****-sucking, mother-phuqing amazing. Some people have said that whilst series one is enjoyable, there's not much to keep you hooked. Series two is much better and ends brilliantly, can't wait to watch the third and final season.
LVSaint Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 Just watched the season finale episode of Dexter..........wow! Next season is going to be interesting...
Arizona Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 Sex and the City. Whatever floats your boat.

Sounds like 'I'll fly away' but actors name escapes me, sorry.
Whitey Grandad Posted 14 December, 2009 Posted 14 December, 2009 I find it hard to believe that Band of Brothers will ever be beaten. It still brings tears to my eyes when the veterans tell their stories.
