Whats the deal with a foreign registered car and road tax and insurance?

I ask because I am noticing a lot more eastern european cars (particularly Polish) on the roads, none of which have car tax.

Is there some sort of grace period or are the cars covered because the owners have paid 2 zlotys back in Warsaw.

There is a grace period of six months before the cars have to be registered here. Trouble is, a lot of the drivers are taking their cars out of the country at the end of that time and driving back in to claim another six months.

How can the authorities even tell accurately how long a car has been in the country?

Surely that's quite easy? Unless people have boat cars a la Top Gear, you just keep track at the ports.

I'd be more concerned about the insurance situation for these cars.

Something the EU will have to sort out.

Yeah it must be worse on the continent, at least we have a reasonably secure border so we should be able to keep track of who is coming in and out.

It's not just tax, though. You will need to register your car there, insure it there, fully comp including UK, get the Belgian equivalent to the MOT done as well.

And then, if you are resident in the UK you will have done it with the intention of avoiding UK duties and your car can be forfeited and sold by the DVLA.

But hey, save yourself a few shillings. Or probably not...
