The missing 10,000

Amesbury Saint

I guess everyone is coming to see the 'superstars' of Exeter City.

There are a multitude of reasons why some fans stopped coming and for posters on here to simplify it is just plain stupidity.

FWIW I will not be at the Exeter match! :D

Agreed.

I'd class myself as a fair weather fan. Follow the results, news etc but attend only a few games.

Whats so wrong with that?

I only started going regularly after the move to SMS but always had a interest in our results - When we we're in the Prem I used to think 'why would I bother watching Saints if they were in a lower league' as some of the matches we're boring quite frankly - now after watching our demise and rebirth (and the inevitable inherent passion for the team that's created by living the good times and the bad times) I believe good football matches are not based on quality of football - when you want your team to win it's all relevant.

Now I've forgotten my point after that babble but it was very cathartic

If we were in the top 6 and looking like promotion, we would get around 28k a week.

Top 2 and we'd sell out.

Like someone said, I think we have a hardcore group of 15k (of which I consider myself to be) who will go no matter what.

We have another 20k who will go when they can (money, work and location etc being the deciding factor) and about 10k who will only go if we're in the prem.

I would be interested to know how many of us have had a season ticket since we moved to St Marys, I would expect it to be below 10k. I hope that we fill the ground again, but some recognition of those that have paid in advance each year regardless of division would be good.

A gold season ticket that gave you additional benefits, I would have a gold holders bar !!

:o Not again.. The Bank Holidays Act 1871, later superseded by the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971, defined 26th December as Boxing Day in England and St. Stephens day in Ireland. I have never known Boxing Day to be anything other than 26th December.

The existence of Boxing Day pre-dated the invention of Bank Holidays. Bank holidays simply hijacked the day so it's a red herring to keep using Bank Holidays as a justification for changing the historic and correct definition of Boxing Day.

The Law is the Law and should always be obeyed - unless it involves me, and perhaps Trousers, of course. ;)

Unless you are under the age of 16, you just have not being paying attention, as even the argument that "Boxing Day = Dec 26" within that Wiki article states that

In the countries that observe this holiday, 26 December is commonly referred to both as Boxing Day and as St. Stephen's Day, no matter what day of the week it occurs.[3] However, in some countries, holidays falling on Saturday or Sunday are observed on the next weekday. Boxing Day cannot be on a Sunday, that day being the officially recognised day of worship, so traditionally it was the next working day of the week following Christmas Day, (i.e. any day from Monday to Saturday).

In recent times this tradition has been either forgotten or ignored. Most people consider 26 December to be Boxing Day even when it falls on a Sunday. The last year 26 December was called Christmas Sunday in the United Kingdom and Canada was 1993. The next time the date fell on a Sunday (1999), it was known as Boxing Day.

Seeing as the Queen has the power to decide, she's the one that gives out the boxes AND she's a stickler for tradition, I would suggest that we go with the traditional definition, not the "dumbed down" one. Cos apart from anything, next year when Dec 26 falls on the Sunday it CANNOT be Boxing Day.

December 26th is Boxing Day, doesn't matter what the law/wikipedia says. If you asked 100 people when boxing day is this year, 99 would say 26th December.

And they'd all be wrong. Plus loads of them would tell you Jordan is a good role model, and probably half of them can't spell you're. And one would be a Skate.

Why is so much effort being spent dwelling on the attendance figures ?

Illingsworth is venting his spleen on his site this week about the Tranmere attendance as well (conveniently ignoring the fact that hardly any Tranmere fans have chosen to travel..)

Those JCLs that dont come are missing the renaissance of SFC. Pity them...

Besides, the team has proven time-and-again it doesnt "do" good performances to a packed home crowd.

So we'll need an extended stadium to accommodate all 45k once we return to the prem and the recession's over then?

Not 'need'. But I guarantee that if we get back to the prem, the demand will be that high. Especially for the bigger games.

Are you implying we do not have 45k fans that would be willing to all go to a game?

There might well be but not all at once unless as said above, it was Wembley or similar...not regulary to justify extending the stadium!

Amazingly, extending St Mary's was hotly debated on here when we were at our Strachan zenith...

Just so long as you lot don't snap up the tickets of those that attend week in week out then there isn't a problem at all. Which is why I think it was bonkers that the club got rid of the membership scheme!

If the numbers increase then I can see it returning but understandably it has not really been necessary of late.

I've just been on the streets of London for two hours asking 100 people this very question and 73 said Boxing Day is always on 26th December this year. So 27 were right.

This is the scariest post I have read on here in a long time.

London is full of weirdos. You should try a proper city. Out of interest, what exactly did the other 27 say? 'What's Boxing Day?'

The who is the best supporter debate is a bit pants really...

I salute anyone who claims to be a Saints fan even if you have never attended a game. It would have been so easy to label yourself a Man U or Arsenal fan but for whatever reason you follow the best club in the world.

If I meet you down the pub I will buy you a pint!

That's going to cost you. Can we have a list of pubs you'll be attending (and when) for the next 10 years please?
