Beattie and Pulis Fall Out

Luggy was hated by all the players as he was often called 'The fat ****** between them.'

I know it was Dodd that pushed it forward even more to get him out as he was acting his captain duties to do so.

Now to tell you how hated the man was, they had a pre season cricket friendly at BAT where Luggy had to sit in a small office to eat his dinner as the players hated the way he eats and smells.

Get the feeling that Beattie would be hard to manage - always the 'leader' of the pranks and laughs but think he probably takes it too far in his plight to be 'Mr Popular'

Beattie did fairly well for us, particularly under wgs, but he always struck me as thinking he was a lot better than he actually is. I wasnt brokenhearted when he left.

I think the players had Monday off, but Pulis called them in to training. Beattie fell out with him, possible blows according to some reports.

Stoke did train today but Beattie didn't show up. Stoke have issued a statement that they are convening an official enquiry into the incident.

Punches and a "headbutt" involved according to Talksport!

Can we be that cynical to suggest he only gave the lads a lift in an attempt to curry favour with the fan base ?

Pulis, despite Stoke being where they are, seems to come under quite a bit of stick, is this down to high expectation of the premiership fan or just football fans never being happy with their lot ?

Anyone else hear some bloke laying into Beatts on the Guardian Football Weekly podcast yesterday? Apparently he's a 'failed footballer' who has never fulfilled his potential, and is sometimes 'as fat as a force-fed pig'.

I'd love to see him back here, maybe at the end of the season. Bear in mind he's what, 31 or 32 now? He's not got more than a season or two left in him at Prem level, but i'm sure he could help us climb the table for another few years in exchange for a rather hefty pay packet.

A friend of mine works for a press agency. They have people calling them all the time with alledged wrong doings by famous people and in particular footballers at nightclubs. During JB's last 2 years at Saints they had more calls about him and a certain hobby of his, than any other footballer at that time.It is not a Southampton based agency, and yet they had call after call about him.

Hear hear. Plus he was looking to leave us as soon as he could. In the meantime during the first half of the season he kept Crouch out of the starting line up, even though his form was pretty poor and with hindsight, he may have done a better job and possibly kept us up. For example, we may have beaten Palace and West Brom at home. Although, I suppose Wigley could be to blame there for not dropping Beattie in favour of Crouch, also at that time we didn't think 'Crouchy was alright' because he hadn't scored that penalty.

Wouldn't say he was looking to leave 'as soon as he could' - didn't he give us 7 years good service?

And of course, at the time he was a potential England international.

Still a quality player, would love to see him play for Saints again. Him and Lambo upfront in the CCC next season :o

Lets be honest here.......

a) There is NO way Beatts would play in L1 at this stage of his career

b) There is NO way we could meet his salary demands.

Still got a lot of time for Beatts, as has he for us and the area. he still does a lot of charity work down here.

Just for old times sake could somebody stick up the pic of his Goal celebration v skatesmyth :D

I think that one would be pretty easy actually given the owner's wealth, but I have assumed we're not going down that road until we have to.

Half the time Beattie was at Saints he looked unfit and limited to say the least and it took Strachan to get the best out of him. Unless he's superfit and the style of play suits what he can do (remember to make a run rather than standing still, then go short, lay it wide and get in the box for a cross) he's still pretty limited. He's never going to dribble his way past someone using a bunch of stepovers or reach anything but the most accurate through-ball - although in that sense he suits our current style perfectly.

OOOpps I actually did mean to type "would" rather than "could".

Disrupting the payscale applecart would severely affect the seemingly top notch player team spirit and morale at the moment...... but if we were to get promoted, bigger and better players would be needed to be drafted in ... at a price of course of course.

And I meant to type "Frank Worthington Football Genius" on the other thread, but it's out there now. ;)

I will trust the judgement of the football club if they want Beattie back, there was so many stories of minor problems when he was last here and I do believe those problems follow him everywhere, I even saw a video shot of him on a mobile phone and it was only then I could not give a **** about him.

There was a period we had to send him away during the xmas break because the guy had cracked!

Let's move on and not look back because we are better than that now.

BBC sport understand he is looking for a move away. Worth an enquiry at least?

He is better than League 1 and imo could still do a job in the prem, his ego would not allow us the slightest consideration and doubt if he would need to as no doubt a couple of prem clubs will feel he is at least worth an enquiry

Would never come here unless we are at least in the CCC, but can you imagine... Beatts and Lambert with Connolly coming off the bench.

He has to be bordering on legendary status IMO. From the goal he scored at Dellhurst, all the goals he scored in the cup final season, 3 goals against Pompey, that celebration when he scored against them, then doing it again for Stoke last season. Then he scored a hattrick to beat Leicester and got "injured" before playing us for Sheff Utd 2 years ago. The noodle spoon and muffin incidents just make me laugh if I'm honnesy.

He was brilliant for us in our best season of the decade ( cup-final year) and he gave the skates plenty in the derbies around that period. I never thought he was the same for us after strachan left - think the england call up went to his head , and he seemed to think he was too good for us. However given the way saints were unravelling post strachan, it was to some degree understandable.

Anyway as someone else said he is part of the past - not the future.

You'll find 6 or 7 VERY GOOD Beattie goals for Saints here: http://www.singasaints.com/ani_gifs.html and if you click the 2003-2004 Goals link and scroll down to the 4th goal, I think you'll find the goal celebration against the skates you're looking for.
