Gis Posted 6 December, 2009 Share Posted 6 December, 2009 Interesting to see Antonio being sent on again and being given license to play through the middle as well as out on the wing. I thought it took the pressure off us towards the end as Walsall felt they had to keep at least a couple defenders with him at all times to contain the threat. Saints now have Waigo, Antonio, and Connolly who are brilliant options off the bench if they are not in the starting line up - can't remember us having many players historically that could come on and change a match, Tony Funnell, maybe Theo when he first started, can't think of too many others. saintchris23 Posted 6 December, 2009 Share Posted 6 December, 2009 Just back.....although I did make a stop over in Nottingham! I thought the team struggled to settle in the first 10-15 minutes and let the ball bounce over the back four far too often for their tricky forward player to nip in time and time again. I was really impressed mid-week with Murtys in-swinging long clearances but agreed yesterday they were shocking. But can't fault the rest of his play. Should have been a penalty but the officials DID bottle it and yet were fussy beyond belief. I also thought our fans were pretty poor to be honest. Not exactly a rousing atmosphere to compete with from the home 'fans' but I was a little embarrassed up until we scored the first goal and kept thinking that Leeds would have made us look like a bunch from the library. Anyway - 1-3(a)/3-1(h) for the rest of the season will do me nicely. (thank you very much!)
RonManager Posted 6 December, 2009 Share Posted 6 December, 2009 Nice to see one of our ex players from times past, Goalkeeper John Christie (1951-59). Apparently he is a regular at SMS.
kpturner Posted 6 December, 2009 Share Posted 6 December, 2009 Arrived at 13:30 starving hungry. Nothing outside foodwise so went in. Queued for 15 minutes and was then told that the burgers had sold out! WTF!! it was only 14:10. Then I saw this: http://www.upthesaddlers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?p=777638#p777638 Must be normal :-(

I liked how he waved at our fans more than Walsall's fans, he played for them over 100 times after he played for us.

That makes me feel much better:mad:. In the end I managed to get a hotdog in a roll made of cardboard, and a chicken balti pie that was full of sauce but no chicken (well - perhaps one bit). RedAndWhite91 Posted 6 December, 2009 Share Posted 6 December, 2009 There was a McDonald's about 5 minutes from the ground as well, and if you're that desperate like we were, McDonald's is alright
RonManager Posted 6 December, 2009 Share Posted 6 December, 2009 Highlights now on SaintsPlayer. More sublime setup passes from Schneiderlin. Their goal is a Harding og. Lol at Perry's header - the whole team seem to be launching themselves at the cross!

The whole football catering thing is highly suspicious. Is there some sort of secret scientific survey going on to see just how bad food has to be before football fans refuse to buy it. One highlight I do remember though, was a very tasty double-cheeseburger at Hillsborough in February 2000. Best so far this season has been the pastys at Bristol Rovers. Worst, the burger at Swindon. NN2 Saint Posted 6 December, 2009 Share Posted 6 December, 2009 Both James and Morgan were superb yesterday. I thought down the right we looked fantastic could really be a partnership. Also having slated Antonio the other day I thought he did a good job when coming on especially as you could say he was being played out of position up front. Came on and did exactly what we needed. All in all a very professional performance by the lads and long may it continue
Chez Posted 6 December, 2009 Share Posted 6 December, 2009 (edited) enjoyable trip despite the arduous drive in the rain. Surprised how empty the ground was considering they were 7th but then again ours isn't exactly full either. I thought we were terrible at the start again - similar to how we started against Wycombe - but Connelly dragged us into the game with his his terrific running and sharpness up front. Even without the goal and assists I thought he was tremendous and am excited by our attacking options. The real negative for me was Murty and Perry. Murty had a terrible game, truly awful, I count 10 forward balls and 9 of them either went to an oponent or went straight out of play (some even out the ground) and nearly all of them were under no pressure at all. Perry had a decent game, but IMO we no longer look safe at set peices and we need Trottman back ASAP as Perry is a weak link in that area and Murty adds no extra height. Thank god Jardi improved as the game went on as even he was being beaten in the air at the start no matter what Pardew said about not losing headers. Once again very happy with Saints and can't wait for the next game. Bart 6 - nothing to do, some poor kicks (but pitch was not the greatest) but he just makes the defence nervous Murty 2 never tested by wideman but gave posession away all day long. Perry 7 solid display Jardi 8 he really is a man mountain. Harding 8 got done a couple of times in the first half but a very very solid display overall. Should have kicked Jones harder the little ****er. Morgan 9 Another top draw display. Some lovely cross field passes. Hammond 6 A little dissapointed, game passed him by. Yes he scored but he didn't really take the game by the scruff of the neck. James 7 solid display, an amazing half volley pass for the first goal. Kind of dissapointed not to have seen Antonio taking on the full back in the second half. Lallana 6 quite simply did not see any ball all day long. Not his fault at all. I am tempted to give him a 10 just for the piece of control in the second half when he brought a goal kick down from over his shoulder that even had Wotton clapping him from the touchline. Gifted. Lambert 7 looks tired to me. Needs a rest, but even tired he still links well with Connelly. Connelly 10 Tremendous game. Antonio 8 brilliant sub display stretching them fully. Wotton 5 one tackle and lots of slow doggies and sitting way too deep. Patterson not on long enough Edited 6 December, 2009 by Chez

The9 Posted 7 December, 2009 Share Posted 7 December, 2009 How useless was that Rayner female linesman. So many times the ball went out and she didnt flag, some many offsides given that clearly werent offside and then not even spotting the Walsall player kick Harding. Just goes to show how she is only a professional referee to try and tempt more women into being officials, rather than being there on merit. Actually I thought she got everything spot on except the kick on Harding which happened when she was flagging for the ball going out, and which the ref was better placed to see anyway. There was even a "not given offside" when James went up the right wing and then ran it out of play which I videoed, and when I watched it back she was right and he was onside despite me saying she'd got it wrong cos the striker was off. She was actually the best lino I've seen at a Saints game in a while. Which isn't to say I didn't chant "you should be washing up" at her.

Chez Posted 8 December, 2009 Share Posted 8 December, 2009 How good was that? =D> makes me laugh to think of all the fools on here over the last year or so telling me Lallana wasn't this or that. What a talent. I can't believe how lucky we have been to unearth yet another gem like this. I think I'll be even more gutted than I was when Bridge deserted us for Chelsea should Lallana leave in the summer. Enjoy every first touch, flick and step over as we won't see his like for a season or two (if he goes) that's for sure.

There seems to be a habit on here (I can't comment about anywhere else) that when young players break through into the team they should immediately hit and sustain great form. Surman and Spiderman had the same treatment. To me it's inevitable that most players will have to take a while to make the step up to pro football. I wonder if because we had Bale and Walcott in quick succession and didn't get to see the form of either of them drop off that the expectation level has been raised.
