I wonder what odds you can get on Saints to be promoted at the moment? Probably worth a fiver!

 

After nine games I backed us at 18/1 for promotion and 150/1 to win the league. In my book both results are still possible, albeit Charlton and Leeds have to wobble like a Jelly with springs for feet...

That is a very good result away to an inform side...now what a fantastic opportunity to banish the demon of Tranmere next week! I won't accept any less than a cricket score after the humiliation of Prenton Park ;)...and if we're 3-up at half time shout f'kin louder!!!

We did that already,6-1 in the 02-03 season. Fantastic win today,every time I think its going to be a tough game and i'd be happy with a draw we end up winning! Tough game next week,hope to see St Marys quite full for it though! If only Lowe had put us into admin before the deadline......

Just back from the game, what a great atmosphere it was in the away end! Really good fun!

 

On the negative side, Murty had a poor game, his passing was extremely erratic and looked almost a little out of his depth. Ricky looked knackered but took his goal extremely well and Lloyd James needs to practice taking people on but otherwise his workrate and skill was outstanding. Our defense looked rather shakey at times, we need a bit of youth and enthusiasm in the centre back position, needs to be a priority for Jan.

 

Positive things now, we utterly utterly ooutclassed one of the leagues in form teams in their own back yard. Our midfield was dominant, we always troubled them when we went forward and totally deserved the 3 points. Could easily have had 4 or 5 goals today.

6/1 Denman for the Gold Cup

14/1 Zaynar for the Champion Hurdle

25/1 Forpaddydeplasterer for the Queen Mum (although I think Master Minded will win)

 

I also have us at 13/2 to with the JPT.

This was a massive game. If we had lost to Walsall it wouldn't have been a disgrace given their great home record, and we would have been back in the bottom 4. Instead we outclassed them and have begun the climb. Its too early to get excited about a playoff place as it gets harder as you get higher up the table, where the teams win more of their own games.

I find that attitude rather strange. It isn't just beating Walsall that has provoked a renewed positive reaction, but the accumulation of great results and form. Remember, this is Southampton FC we are talking about. The perrenial let-us-down-in-the-end team. ;)

 

However, a slight word of caution. Leeds Utd are after Tranmere Rovers.

 

I'm doing the predictor, on the Beeb website, and it's a tedious slog this early in the season. Although I'm predicting the same good form, we are having a harder time getting much higher than we are at present.

But one of those teams was ... Walsall.

 

I suspect that the discussion inside the dressing room, but certainly not outside it, is that missing the playoffs would be a failure.

 

Build the confidence and then re-set the goals.

Excellent today. We completely outplayed them and Connolly's performance was something else. They couldn't live with him. Walsall were pretty poor TBF, apart from Byfleet they didn't really have anything.

 

Edit: Officially 1,791 away fans out of an attendance of 5,600. Not sure there were more fans outside the away sections than inside it.

We are a level above all the teams in the bottom half of this league, if we just avoid relegation by the end of the season then it will have been an awful season.

 

Please - show some ambition, we're starting to play as if we're too good for this league.

Every team's primary target is to avoid relegation, even teams like Man U, Arsenal, etc... But they start to look up. It's just a matter of when.

I didn't think we looked shakey against a one dimensional Walsall side but the CB pairing doesn't install an awful lot of confidence at the moment.

 

Murty's passing was as poor as I've seen in many a year. Good defending though.

I agree with that though I think quite a few players were having problems keeping the ball on the pitch on that wing (whether it was the wind, a slight slope or just crap play). Quite amusing when he put it out of the stadium and just stood there, scratching his chin.

Not long been back from my pennance - stewarding at Argyle and seeing them lose 0-1 at home.

 

Delighted to see the mighty Saints have won 1-3 away again. Same scorers: Connoly; Lambert; Hammond.

 

Got to be a good bet for the next away game?

Here's my attempt at ratings, 6 being the average, meaning they had an ok game, like on football manager :)

 

Bialkowskli - 6 - Didn't have all that much to do but did well when called upon.

Murty - 6 - Passing was a bit dodgy but some good link up play with James, and fairly solid.

Jaidi - 6 - Average game, did what he had to do.

Perry - 6 - As above really.

Harding - 7 - Looked good again.

Hammond - 8 - Seemed to be everywhere, got a goal and held it together in the middle well.

Schneiderlin - 7 - Nothing sensational but played well, great ball to Connolly for the first goal.

James - 8 - Yes, shock, but James played well today at right wing, a definite improvement from past weeks.

Lallana - 6 - Had a quiet game, had one good effort towards the end.

Lambert - 8 - Lambert is such a good player, and proved it again today.

Connolly - 9 - A class above, scored one, set up one and his shot practically set up Hammond's goal. MOTM for me.

 

Antonio - 8 - Looked good when he came on for the last 20 minutes, lively, everywhere, and was unlucky not to get a goal.

Wotton - 6 - Just held it together at the end like he usually does nowadays.

Paterson - 6 - Only was on for about 5 minutes.
