Nineteen Canteen Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 But Lallana subsequently showed he wasn't up to playing a full season at that stage. Either that or he was poor last season because of Poortvliet or Wotte. You can't have it both ways. In any case Pearson did what he needed to do - you speak as though he failed. And don't come on with some meaningless statistics. We were going down the pan. He kept us up. He has now got a team promoted and into the top eschalons of the Championship. He is obviously a much better manager than Wotte or Poortvliet. Just accept that Poortvliet and Wotte were both a terrible farce and be done with it. There is no other sensible viewpoint. Benji, I agree Poortvliet was not up to the job and I don't understand why the two of them were employed in the first place when they clearly did not get on. However, I think Wotte is a decent man and does have something to bring to the game and recommendations from the likes of Martin Jol will do for me. I won't drag up the stats on Pearson as that has been done before and you know where I stand on that matter. However, based on what Pearson achieved at Saints and what Wotte achieved as manager it would suggest that the latter has just as much chance of making it as Pearson given the right role. There is no other sensible viewpoint as both were unproven when they left Saints but clearly Wotte was working in an atmosphere far more hostile than Pearson and for far less money allegedly. Nineteen Canteen Posted 3 December, 2009 Share Posted 3 December, 2009 Bizarre beyond belief. I won't post your comments on Pearson as it will make you look stupid and you seem to have mastered that all by yourself. And that from a poster who couldn't pour water from his wellies if the instructions on how to do so were printed on the heel. You've mastered the art of rubbishing posts and not providing one soupcon of an idea as to why. Look out Richard Dimbleby.

This is something i have thought for a long time. The sad thing is, i am not sure Wotte would have gotton half of the hero worship that Pearson got if he luckily managed to keep us up. Any manager would have struggled last year, anyone with an ounce of knowledge must be able to see that.

Wotte didn't need to accept the next role that came along as unlike Pearson the club decided to recognise the man's contribution with a 12 month contract. Perhaps there is a clause in that contract that prevented Wotte moving to a another club for 6 months or perhaps he simply chose to wait for an opportunity that suited him. Pearson's side didn't need investment when he inherited the likes of Fryatt and Oakley. We worry about losing Lambert or Lallana but what if Leicester received an offer for Fryatt they couldn't refuse? The team thus far have managed itself but as soon as the waters get a bit choppy which they inevitably will and Pearson is properly tested, he will be found wanting IMO. Take Ian Holloway the man whose legacy Pearson inherited, not doing a bad job at managing at a cash strapped club like Blackpool. Unfortunately, Mandaric's track record show that he isn't blessed with patience when the rough times replace the smooth no matter how temporary. That was the squad that got them relegated in the first place. So effectively what you are saying is that a similar squad that was releagted under a previous manager has been turned around to challenge for promotion by Pearson ...... Fook me he must be pretty good that Pearson fella

Dignity, tolerance and strength of character and hardly surprising he is invited back to watch a match. Other ex-Saints have a lot to learn in some instances, iMO. Nineteen Canteen Posted 4 December, 2009 Share Posted 4 December, 2009 The judgement of anyone who hitches himself to the Lowe bandwagon has to be questioned doesn't it 19 C??? In the current environment I agree but 18 months ago in a 3 horse race that would barely grace the undercard of an AW fixture at Lingfield in January then I hitched myself to the horse I felt would get us closest to the finish line whilst running the straightest course as oppose to meandering and backtracking all over the place. It was Hobson choice but a choice nonetheless.
Dark Munster Posted 4 December, 2009 Share Posted 4 December, 2009 One could say a similar thing about the charlton squad, they were relegated as they were completely woeful, but still now sit pretty at the top quarter of league 1, 2nd are they ?? Err, bit of a difference. Charlton were relegated and are doing well in a division below. Leicester were relegated are now doing well back in the same division from which they were relegated. First the Lowe luvvies said Pearson would struggle in L1. Then, after Leicester walked L1 (at 2.08 points per game), they said L1 was easy and that Pearson would be found out in the CCC. But now Leicester are currently third, so they are saying he will be found out later! No doubt, if he takes them up to the PL, they'll say he'll get found out there. I can see where this could end. One day Pearson may take them to the Champions League final, where they get thrashed by Barcelona. Then the Lowe luvvies would say "told you so". :smt043

I suspect that he is tainted by his association with Lowe and that is what is preventing him from getting another job in English football. I don't believe for one minute you think that is true and that if Wotte is tainted by his association with Lowe then it's solely the prejudice of those doing the tainting. Mark Wotte is a decent man and judging by the way he conducted himself and managed the team during the time with us I have no doubt he at least has the potential to be the equal of Pearson. In hindsight having decided to can Pearson, Lowes biggest mistake in his last tenure was not to persuade Wotte from taking the manager's job full time. Afterall he did at least come with some strong endorsements regard his ability where as JP did seem about as hapless as Dodd and Gorman IMO. Tamesaint Posted 4 December, 2009 Share Posted 4 December, 2009 Are Strachan, Souness, Jones and others "tainted" by their association with Lowe? Of course not. They were established names in English football when they came to Saints. Stachan and Souness walked because they could see Lowe's limitations and their standing would , if anything, have improved because of that. Wotte (and Portfvleit) came to this country pretty much unknown. Their "talents" had only been "spotted" by Lowe and guess what .... they haven't got another job in English football. I am guessing that their "talents" were also spotted by the other employers who gave them jobs in football management. Also how do you know why those other managers walked? Isn't it odd, given that Lowe is the Kiss Of Death, that so many managers came to work for him??? And that WGS still dines with him?

I do not understand what you are saying. Who are these other employers giving jobs in football to JP and Wotte? Nobody else has yet employed Wotte. JP is now back languishing in the lower leagues of Dutch football (with, apparently, another relegation beckoning) and hasn't been snapped up by another English club. How do I know that Strachan and Souness walked?? Because they said so!! Are you saying that Lowe sacked them as well?? "So many managers came to work for him" ?? The fact that he had to scour the lower leagues of Dutch football to find someone to work for him illustrates his desparation in getting people to come and work for him. sadoldgit Posted 4 December, 2009 Share Posted 4 December, 2009 1. They were emploed in football management before they joined us. 2. I meant to say how do you know why they walked, sorry, too much win e tonight. 3. I don't think he scoured the lower leagues of Dutch football. The fact that every time the job came up there were plenty of "names" up for working with Lowe says something. He choose those two because they were cheaper and because he wanted to bring through the youth and I guess he felt they had the credentials to do it.
