Back from the game - stopped over last night for a change.

It was cold and wet - but the manner which we won warmed the ****les of my heart.

Bart had very little to do except for the one long range shot in the second half, and for all their possession Wycombe found us difficult to breakdown. Excellent to finish with a clean sheet - is it me or does Bart really command his area and gets the ball out to players in space quicker? He comes for crosses - and looks much more in charge!

I thought Schneiderlin had an excellent game - was he Hammond in disguise. He really did break up a lot of plays.

Finally to all the Waigo knockers leave him alone. Antonio needs more composure and an extra pass to teammates wouldn't go amiss. They both have pace and are exciting players to watch. Antonio's throw is better than a corner!

Off to Wallsall on Saturday - full of hope. They will be a bit of a test for us they have more in their arsenal than Wycombe.

As for the crowd - it wasn't a good night hence many would have stayed away...pricing for such a game will put people off just before Christmas. I bet they will have about the same for the Norwich JPT game too - unless it is an early kick off with reduced prices for kids.

What a load of ********. Just out of interest, do you go to every game? Have you made that judgement over the season, or based it on one match? If it wasn't for Lambert's goals and assists, hold up play and presence we would still be mooching around 24th spot. Who do you suggest we play instead of him if he isn't good enough? Maybe you should go and watch Arsenal, they seem to be scoring a lot of goals.
i think he was trolling. Although I did see a saints fan on rthe Northam scream 'you lazy fat git' at lambert.

Thats footie fans for you. His fininsh was class. He does look as he is carrying an injury and it shows the lack of depth in our squad that we cant afford to rest him

Calling Lambert a Fat Laxy Baxxard, for gods sake! The guy has run his guts out on his own getting hammered in a 4-5-1 role! OK he aint Theo Walcott but please!!!

And slagging Papa is OOO as well, love to see a video of his 'offsides'. Good composure for the goal.

Difficult game to call (difficult game to watch for long parts!), it could have been 4-0, it could have been 1-1. Saints looked lethargic from the start and served up a generous mix of misplaced passes and aimless hoof-ball for most of the first half, very hard on the eye and it rather tested the patience of a small and tetchy crowd. As has been said Wycombe were by far the weakest team we have played in the league this season and on this form they look nailed-on for a bottom four position, which only made Saints’ ineptitude all the more frustrating.

Saints started 4-1-4-1 but failed to make our superior numbers in midfield count as we constantly gave the ball away leaving Lambert feeding on scraps (again). The only bright spark in the general dross of the first half (on both sides) was Waigo who worked hard in attack and defence but was too often let down by the service to him after getting into some great positions (agree on the general offside thing, he is quick enough to hold his run by a yard, our midfield need to get on his wavelength as he has excellent early movement across the line and we need to play him in 5yds quicker than they were last night; and the lino needs to keep up and read him, I wasn’t in the best position to see but several in the first-half looked dubious at best). Saints then scored a goal that was out of keeping with most of what had gone before, decent build up, a penetrating long ball out wide to Waigo who easily out-paced his man to provide the perfect assist for Lambert to make no mistake. Visible relief in the team and the ground and a real platform for the second half.

The second half was infinitely better than the first and turned out to be quite entertaining, but for all the wrong reasons. Saints had pretty much the run of the pitch for the first 15 minutes but couldn’t find a second as they contrived to miss the goal, shoot over, fall over, and shoot straight at the keeper on at least four occasions.

Just a word for their keeper, probably the worst keeper I’ve ever seen in a pro-game! Nil control of his area, stayed on the line for everything (except for the number of occasions when he rushed needlessly from his area), twice crawling after the ball in his own 6 yd box, he did block a number of shots that were straight at him but he never looked like holding anything and his rebounds were always straight back into the danger area, never away for a corner or out sideways, how didn’t we score from at least one of the six occasions he created mayhem in his own box?

All of which Keystone-copping led to an increasingly nervous last 15 minutes as Wycombe sensed they were in with a chance of a thoroughly undeserved point and actually played some constructive football against a tired looking Saints team but they offered no real threat for the whole 90 mins while we continued to mess and miss pretty much till the final whistle. In previous seasons we would have conceded in the last 10 mins and hung on for a 1-1.

I’ve seen several really good games this season but have to say I’d forgotten what ‘winning ugly’ actually looks like; obviously we can’t win pretty every week and the SMS faithful have seen two really good games in the previous two but have to say last night left a nasty taste. Really poor opposition, small crowd, poor atmosphere, poor performance from Saints; traffic was rammed after the game, got home at 12.30am.

Still, 3 points, out of relegation, and the Skates lost, happy-clap me up!

Bart 6, good to see him getting a chance, very little to do, looked tidy enough and hopefully his distribution will sharpen up with games played.

Murty 6, still getting back to match speed/match fitness, solid at the back but expected a bit more offensively if I’m honest (first time I’ve seen him live)

Jaidi 6, usual combo of rock and the occasional silly mistake, a real asset at this level

Perry 7, busy and efficient, played his part in what was probably the easiest clean sheet we will earn all season.

Harding 5, looked tired and very little attacking threat in this game

James 5, busy in the Wotton role, covered a lot of ground and won his share of headers and tackles, distribution still below par but clearly a future in this role

Waigo 7, my man of the match. I like his pace, his attitude, his enthusiasm, his positive attacking instincts, his workrate for the team. The sort of player we haven’t had for a number of years.

Hammond 5, work a day performance, got the job done (sometimes you have to do that), but clearly not his best game.

Schneiderlin 7, solid game, got stuck in and looked really good albeit against a conference-level side; can he do it (consistently) against the best teams? Leeds away will tell us!

Lallana 7, has added consistency to everything else he offers, looking physically stronger with every game he plays. Rather isolated at times last night but he has a real goalscorer’s knack of getting himself into goal-scoring positions.

Ricky 6, looked jaded from the off. A lot of hoof-ball that was nowhere near him in the first half, came alive for his goal but against their comedy keeper he must be wondering how he didn’t grab 3 or 4 last night.

Antonio 7, a sort of footballing Frank Bruno (‘you know what I mean ‘Arry?’). In a word, loveable.

Wotton, only on long enough to foul 2 people.

Mellis, forgotten man, can’t see Chelsk keeping him on our bench for much longer.

Ref 7, ‘fussy’ but not helped by the conditions or the number of times we were offside. Got most of it right and didn’t get a long wrong.

Fans 4, I thought I’d arrived by tardis. Ground emptiest I’ve seen it for a long time, atmosphere tetchy, temperature freezing, oppo fans nil.

Thoughts?

We won!

We will have to play a lot better to get anything at Walsall (I think we will on both counts).

Players looked tired which is a concern with Xmas coming up; concerns about our squad depth / rotation. Why do Lambert and Lallana play every minute of every game, he could easily have given Lambo 20 minutes off yesterday (or 45 last Saturday)?

I love my Saints and I love my football but last night was on those when we just have to take it and move on; I was a grumpy old man driving home last night and not feeling much better this morning!

GGGGRRRRRHHHH!

A good report and pretty much how I saw the game.

We were no where near our best and WW were poor.

Waigo does not deserve the stick he is getting, he was the only bright spark we had in the first half, gifted Lambert a goal, and should have scored a great goal after tracking back, tackling and starting a great move from our end to being up the other end only to miss! Was a great bit of play which deserved a goal, shame. Also the lino Itchen side 1st half was poor and gave Waigo offside at least 2-3 times wrongly IMO.

Morgan S my MOM followed by Waigo.

Great to win though, and although cold and wet had plenty of time to dry off and warm up on the way home thanks to Redbridge flyover being closed....great!!

What a strange match. We were frustrated all night by the offside trap and couldn't beat it and they were useless and never looked like troubling our defence. With Stuart Pearce watching you'd have thought Adam would have turned on the magic but he seemed to **** it up time after time by trying too hard when the simple thing would have netted him about 4 goals.

Superlative Schneiderlin, Mighty Murty, Peerless Perry and Juggler James... Wow! What stars, and Jaidi played a blinder as well.

What's happened to Hammond, he seems to be all at sea since AP gave him the skip-band, now it looks like he needs a band-aid!

After another woeful display of laziness and shooting incompetence amounting to grand larceny, I am convinced that Lambert is a waste of space even 'though somehow he manages to get his name on the score-sheet every week. He just isn't good enough for our team now. He was supposedly worth £1m, I'll bet Bristol Rovers have been laughing with their bank manager ever since.

TBH everyone should be laughing at you for such a moronic statement...

You are utterly clueless...

I agree Lambert didn't have his best game last night, but he was far from woeful. He is very much good enough for our team, and his 25+ goals this season will prove it.

My + players last night were, in no paticular order. Perry James Jaidi Morgan Papa Murty. - players Harding Llallana and indifferent Lambert Bart and Hammond.

Lambert is a striker, he scores goals when you need them, that's what the job is all about. We haven't had one of those for a long time so I forgive you all forgetting what a "striker" is all about.

So he didn't have a great game but he does what he's paid for-puts the ball into the net.

Gerd Muller and Jimmy Greaves would probably get slagged off endlessly on this forum and get ratings of 1/10 every week.

Lol!! Are you kidding me? He's not good enough for our team yet is the league top scorer? Charlie I know you have a bit of a rep on here as a "moaner" but seriously at least pick something sensible! The guys had a few off games but so many of our chances come from Lamberts lay offs, passes or him pulling defenders away with his movement its untrue. Which of our world class players currently behind him in the pecking order would you chose to start with?

His cross for Waigo's goal on Saturday was first class, he has 14 league goals, is a consistent penalty taker, isn't the quickest but has a good football brain and we are lucky to have him.

Well I wish we had other useless players who will score over twenty goals a season

A win is a win. A clean sheet is well recieved too, even if we didn't have much to deal with. Better finishing and the rest of the season is looking lovely.

Another 3 points on Saturday at Walsall (not easy but doable) and we'll already be flying towards mid-table. Hoping it will be a good Christmas this year!

well done saints, so you didnt score more than 1, so papa was offside most of the game, so it was'nt a great performance, it was a clean sheet and i believe you can beat any team in this division, very soon the doom mongers will be on here giving it , we cant score, cant defend , so & so is a liability, we'll never make the playoffs, well i believe and i have faith just set em up and keep the points flowing, cant wait till saturday.

excellent win today, am enjoying the journey

Well the happy clappies are out in force. A clean sheet yes, 3 points yes and keeps the run going. For god's sake though, the performance was far from deserving of the majority of glowing plaudits I have read on here. We were hanging on at the end and that defence is far from being solid and reliable. Bialkowski however looks ok when called on and how good to see a keeper bowling the ball out to feet rather than that boot up the middle for 5 mins of head tennis!!

We are moving forward as a team but let's keep a sense of proportion - we aint as good as some now believe.... but we are moving ibn the right direction.

Fair comment but is it wrong for people to enjoy a string of good results ? Yes we were sloppy at times but there was a nervousness in the players and crowd wanting to get the monkey of being in the bottom zone off our backs. How we have yearned for having a team that plays badly but still wins. Last season we played some good football and lost time and again, ddi you feel better then?

We won and there were some very good passages of play (especially in the spell in the second half) but i do agree our defence still does not seem as solid as id like. I hope Bart gets his full confidence and in turn the defenders will trust him more.i suggest jaidis reluctance to pass back to him stems from seeing him in training, in time if Bart gains their confidence it will improve.

It is strange to have a go at a striker who scores! Mind you he is more prolific than Rasiak and he slated on here week after week.

Ricky Lambert adds another dimension to our team - he is a bit talismatic. The next thing you know is he will be out injured (I hope not!) and everyone will be moaning about how short we are up front.

Everyone moaned about Beattie too - but under the circumstances I'd play RL every week, if not be the first name on the team sheet. No one moans about him but Hammond is a close second, with Murty at the back. These guys are worth playing week in and week out. Pardew for all his so called short fallings seems to be able to get the best from players at this level...I wonder if the players respect him rather than go on tittle tattle from the papers at previous clubs?

We are very lucky - we have no prima donnas at SFC at the moment - although Antonio has a Fabrice moment the other night. I get the feeling he is "Billy Big Boots" from Reading. I don't see any of our lot rolling around after being tripped - and the other thing I really like is the fact they all stick up for each other.

Some people on here should get a reality check.

We do not have a devine right to expect Premiership footballer quality in this league

We are now in League 1 - the old Third Division

We are not the biggest club in Hampshire

We are the best supported club in Hampshire

We have ambition, money and desire at all levels

The play-offs are not out of the question providing we win consistently

We (the squad & facilities) are the envy of every club in this league bar Leeds

We are too big for this League - but have to denmonstrate we are good enough to get out.

I have one real problem - IF we get promoted we will need some additional players as some will not be good enough or young enough. A promoted team has a dilemna - the team that got me up should be given a chance to step up to the next level. I firmly believe the building blocks are being put in place...the likes of Lambert, Hammond & Lallanna must have some sort of "promise" to be part of the bigger picture. We need to spend wisely in January. The likes of Murty, Harding & Jaidi I think would struggle with the pace of the game in The Championship - so we need some investment in the defence.

I'm just glad I pay and watch and don't have to make the decisions...all I know is I want a team of triers who care - and it's what we have this year. Every kick, every tackle, every goal & every save means so much to everyone from the owner to the ball boy. Hpw long have we been asking for that?

Which reminds me of a chant at Hartlepool - what with the wind a few balls were lost and time wasted to get a new one on. Some clever fan started up - "We've got more balls than you" followed by "Multi-ball".

We really don't know how lucky we are...I'm still pinching myself!

It may be League 1...but it is at least honest football being enjoyed by honest fans!

See you at Wallsall?
