Master Bates Posted 30 November, 2009 Posted 30 November, 2009 The 'Saints Kits' section could do with a bit of an update, first bit I went to aswell. Now, let's see what else I can find wrong with it.
ponto1963 Posted 30 November, 2009 Author Posted 30 November, 2009 Constructive criticism welcomed.

Thanks Gary Chalk's and Duncan Holley's A Complete Record of SFC 1885 - 1987 is The Dogs Dangly Bits for info like that. Not sure if it is still available for purchase anywhere still ... but I'm sure more info will be forthcoming on here soon!! Good luck with your venture.

All the league tables from the 1894/95 season can be found there. Are you sure that you've got the pre 1975 goal averages right on probablythebest, Ponty? I always thought that you divided goals conceded into goals scored to get the average... i.e. win 5 - 1 then goal average = 5. Lose 1 - 5 then goal average = 0.2
Ashtead Saint Posted 30 November, 2009 Posted 30 November, 2009 Maybe total goals for and against columns? I know you can get there by adding HGF and AGF, but it would be nice to see at a glance which season(s) we topped 100 goals. The shirts archive is a nice feature - any chance of the latest strips?
Matthew Le God Posted 30 November, 2009 Posted 30 November, 2009 This would be better for kits if they don't mind you copying them. http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Southampton/Southampton.htm

I always thought that you divided goals conceded into goals scored to get the average... i.e. win 5 - 1 then goal average = 5. Lose 1 - 5 then goal average = 0.2 I was right - I have just checked 'The Complete history' for 1949/50 season when we missed out on promotion on goal average and they say we had a Goal Ave of 1.333 (for 64 against 48; 64 / 48 = 1.333). On Ponty's website it has 0.3333 - I'm not sure how he worked out the averages but according to him we were promoted with a goal ave of 0.238 in 1960 but relegated with 0.8 in 1953 (rather unlikely)... Otherwise, it's very impressive! I can scan and send earlier league tables if it is of help.

Thanks Here's a site I came across a while back - it has every league table back to 1888. No reason to doubt the accuracy: http://www.rsssf.com/engpaul/FLA/league.html
krissyboy31 Posted 30 November, 2009 Posted 30 November, 2009 Is the book "In That Number" still available ? Didn't the club owe money to FF and Gary Chalk, last season for books supplied to the Saints Megastore?

It's not my site. I'd never do a statistics based site as nine times out of ten I hate them. It's ponto1963's site.

I normally use upthesaints for all our past scores and league tables but not sure its 100% accurate.
ponto1963 Posted 1 December, 2009 Author Posted 1 December, 2009 Thanks for all the help :-) Looks as if the only records pre 1920 are for Div 1 & 2 only. Unfortunately we don't seem to be in those. Will keep on looking.
The9 Posted 1 December, 2009 Posted 1 December, 2009 A few mentions of Saints in the Southern League pre 1920 here, including the reserves winning the Eastern Division in 1923 for a more obscure fact : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Football_League Good job 2nd Scots Guards dropped out, that's all I'm saying.
david in sweden Posted 1 December, 2009 Posted 1 December, 2009 Is the book "In That Number" still available ? If they... are I'd advise you to get one. It's a work of art (and love) and contains info. you never even thought about. How on earth they ever found the time to source out the info. beats me. ..but it's a masterpiece. I had some conatct with Gary Chalk a while back and I think he said that somewhere there were some unsold copies in someone's garage.(?) Why not treat yourselfto a copy this Christmas - you'll not regret it . (Can't find Gary's contact info. but someone on this site will surely know).
ponto1963 Posted 1 December, 2009 Author Posted 1 December, 2009 Interesting research this. Saints have played 4,138 league games Scored 6351 league goals Won 1621 League games Been Champions of their league 7 times Just updating web page now with data.
ponto1963 Posted 2 December, 2009 Author Posted 2 December, 2009 http://www.probablythebest.net/saints/FinalTable.htm now fully updated from 1894. Hopefully all correct, have removed goal averages as I'm not sure if they were correct or not.
