RedAndWhite91 Posted 30 November, 2009 Share Posted 30 November, 2009 The squad AP took over was top 6 easy peasy. Dont want to hear another word on it - closed. Our squad against Millwall, first game of the season: Davis, Murty, Thomas, Perry, Harding, James, Wotton, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Paterson, Saganowski. Compared to our squad against Hartlepool, our most recent league game: Davis, Murty, Jaidi, Trotman, Harding, James, Hammond, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Lambert, Connolly. Now, I'm sitting on the fence in this debate, but I believe our squad now is a lot better and stronger than it was at the start of the season, with additions such as Lambert, Hammond, Jaidi, Connolly, etc. If you genuinely believe our squad at the start of the season is top six material, then that surely points to the idea that our squad now should gain automatic promotion. I know that's unlikely because of our minus 10, and I believe that next season we will definitely be serious contenders for the title. I guess the point I'm making, although I have digressed, is that our squad now is a lot better than the squad we had at the start of the season, so should we be able to get an automatic spot this season? Micky Posted 30 November, 2009 Share Posted 30 November, 2009 can you explain? Yeah - the expectation seems to be promotion next season or bust. Probably the same expectation that Leeds fans had when they arrived in League 1. What will this board be like if that does not happen - total meltdown? We have a very rich owner - apparently puts us on par with Man City. Are we assuming that our very rich owner has given our Chairman a bottomless pit of money and said use what you want? We may be running on a budget similar to other L1 sides - who knows? As with all things in life - money helps - but it guarantees nothing, look at eerrrr Manchester City. We may well have a five year plan - but what if things go slightly off track in year 2, will the fans do (as Man City fans did) and stay with the management and players - I wonder? Window Cleaner Posted 30 November, 2009 Share Posted 30 November, 2009 If the team AP inherited was top 6 then how come they had a poor start? I don't know exactly why but Glasgow doesn't seem to be a fan of AP. Obviously the team wasn't top 6,still isn't because of the diabolical defence we had and to some extent still have.Still don't let that get in the way of a bit of AP bashing. He also failed to notice that Murty and Harding were in the Millwall game, nether of which were inherited by AP. I'd be much more worried about our finishing position if we didn't have AP, his coaching staff and the players he recruited.
The boy done well Posted 30 November, 2009 Share Posted 30 November, 2009 Well I reckon, as do those I go with, that the team AP inherited would have gone down again. We were hopeless. Lord knows how many would have turned up to continue watching that rubbish. Even less than the blue few possibly...or perhaps not!
Andy_Porter Posted 30 November, 2009 Share Posted 30 November, 2009 Team AP inherited was top 6 no problemo! Madness. The defence lacked any sort of cover, we would be relying on Lancashire (useless), Perry (old) and Thomas (injury ridden) as our only centre backs. They aren't very good as it, we'd have shipped goals in every game. Paterson is too young to be relied on and Saganowski doesn't want to be here, even if he did he's still pretty poor. There was again no real cover, we simply wouldn't score anywhere near enough goals. The midfield is ok but we would have lacked a driving force without Hammond and no real pace without Waigo or Antonio. We would be relying on youngsters and it would be just like last season. There are some very good sides in this league, our team now is very competetive, the team we had at the start of the season that played Millwall, Huddersfield, Swindon etc would have been in a relegation battle. They where that poor, it's good at Pardew has sorted it out quite quickly.

mattyd Posted 1 December, 2009 Share Posted 1 December, 2009 Our spending should also include a huge (for div 1) wage bill. I remember MW saying that Thomas was "too expensive" for this div in the summer. The day before he left in fact. Add two experienced managers as assistants, the scouting system (which implies more signings) and the rest and we can assume we are big spenders. Remember many of the other clubs (eg Norwich) sold as well. Look at their net spending. We have made very little on sales post takeover (which is the period in question). Glasgow_Saint Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 AP has bought in 10 players already - could soon be 12. The majority of 'better' players from last year, and yes i say better lightly have moved on, we needed drastic improvements, we got better players in. Now it would be nice to see a few more faces, the squad needs spicing up, there are players that just are not good enough.

I understand that we are a league 1 team yes, but they are just not good enough. Wotton is shocking, Gillet is obviously not liked by pards (although doing a job in CCC) and James is having a mixed bag. We still need atleast a CB, a RB and a new CM, could do with another striker as well. We have IMO a good enough team to atleast make the playoffs yes but i would not moan at better players, as long as they are 'better' than we have already, this could be the difference and should also give us a good start in the CCC when we get there. Saint_clark Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 Wotton, Saga, Holmes and Gillet are not good enough from that list. Listing Davis and Bart is pointless as we are not looking to strengthen that position.

Alain Perrin Posted 2 January, 2010 Share Posted 2 January, 2010 It's not all about the players. You have to play with heart, tactics and guile. All things that the team last year (and for previous seasons) lacked. Pardew has started to instil this, but it's not something that comes over night. Players brought in should support this endeavour - on their own they're irrelevant.
