Hammond is ****. He should not be our skipper. Jaidi is much more appropriate.

i hate these statements

you're so sure of it, point it out like your opinion is fact - yet offer nothing to back it up...then just slide away.

From watching online I personally thought the penalty was harsh. Hammond had his hands quite close to him, trying to hold off the player in front of him. The ball dropped between Hammond and the Northampton striker and touched his hand. i don't think it could have been seen as deliberate and I also don't think it denied Northampton a goal scoring opportunity. I suppose if the ref sees it hit a hand in the box he as no choice though.

We missed Trotman today and i think Thomas would have been a better bet than Perry however good to see Perry get a game though.

I think that was exactly the point. Give Perry game time against opposition he can handle so he doesn't get fed up. Thomas is undoubtedly the one pushing the 2 first choice CBs and for any league game would be the automatic replacement

Gosh, don't peeps get rattled easily :-)

For the record, delighted we won, bring on the draw, couldn't be more pleased. Slight concern tho that we conceded 2 against struggling L2 opponents, just my opinion (I am allowed one - sure I read somewhere that I was) that our defence might be an area Pards may choose to focus some attention on.

Trying to remember the last season when i actualy looked forward to games without that desperately sick feeling of impending doom. Loving this, want it to carry on, and want it to get better yet :-)

Sat in the car park (in a car) defrosting and reattaching my mammory glands. Not going anywhere in the traffic for 20 mins, so here goes.

Wow, cruising at 3-0 up away in the FA Cup. We let in an injury time penalty and end up only just winning 3-2. In truth though, Northampton were complete garbage. Their goalie was voted MOTM, in protest more than anything else I think. Saints weren't all that TBH. Was sat almost in line with the goal line and I don't think Hammonds goal completely crossed the line.

The players:

Bart - 7 Made a couple of decent saves and only flapped at a cross once. Made a decent recovery. Nothing he could do about a fluke o.g. which surprised everyone.

Murty - 7 Looked very reliable and assured. Definite improvement on James.

Jaidi - 7 Monster in the air, looked pretty solid.

Perry - 5 Too old IMO. Has the pace and agility of a tectonic plate and is as good in the air as the Krygistan Air Force.

Harding - 7 Another reliable display.

Waigo - 6 Looked our best player in a forgetable first half (up until 40 mins). Good commitment or his goal, took a fair whack. Annonymous after the break.

Hammond - 6 Worked hard in the middle, unlucky with the o.g. lost concentration for the pen I think.

Schneiderlin - 6 A few creative passes, but not many.

Wotton - 7 Good at destroying things. Did his job.

Lallana - 7 Goal was about all he did first half. Livelier second half.

Lambert - 7 Worked well to bring the team into play, but had to do a lot of chasing up front alone, which limited his chances.

Subs - Little time to judge either.

A few Lols:

Larde Akinfenwa - Made MLT look like Posh Spice. Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiig lad.

Perry attempting to challenge afforementioned Zepperlin and bouncing straight off him.

The half time dancers getting the wrong music. Twice. And the CD kept skipping. "You don't know what you're doing!"

The three kids running onto the pitch at the end and none of the stewards bothering to stop them.

Being probably the only fan to go to todays match via Poland.

The fans - I am sure we outnumbered them. Our two stands appeared to have a lot more people in.

Song of the day - "Send him back to KFC" when Akinfenwa was subbed off.

weird match from him....a goal, an OG and a penalty given away.

But not as weird as Chris Nichol once scoring all four goals in a 2-2 draw between Leicester and Villa.

Admittedly it is only peanuts in the big scheme of things but FA Cup fees for winning in the 1st round were 18000 and 2nd round 27000 quid. A 3rd round victory would net 67500 quid but of course now we are technically a minnow any tie againts a higher league team could have the TV cameras :( in situ for a possible 'giant killing' .

Goals coming from all over the shop is so good.

My god Papa has 5 i think as a part time player ... did we have anybody over 5 by Xmas last year

Next step .... out of the bottom 4 on tuesday.

everyone is happy we won (dont pretend they are not)..

do you not think it is reasonable to be concerned at the amount of goals we conceed..?

do you think pardew is concerned..?

do you not want saints to be better every week..?

Am I being unrealistic again..?

Do I think it is reasonable to be concerned about the goals we concede? Concerned is probably too strong. I would probably want us to close games out a little more comfortably, yes, but I am now so firmly convinced of our ability to find a goal from somewhere in the team if it is required, that at the moment it is an irritation rather than a concern. We found 2 at Orient to come back from 2 nil down and 3 at Hartlepool after being 1-0 down; same at home to MK Dons, so no, not concerned, but will expect it to improve over time. Perry was playing again today and Murty is still finding his feet after injury, so give it time. I expect Pardew is irritated too, rather than concerned at this stage - if we were not scoring, then concern would register certainly - and he is on record as saying he won't change his style of attacking and goal-heavy football.

At the moment, I am just enjoying expecting Saints to win each time they play. It's actually FUN again. When was the last time any of us could say that?! It's like a lower league version of the Nicholl days; really enjoyable and rewarding. If we can get to mid-table or higher this season, maybe a JPT final, then that would be a decent season given our starting point (-10, **** team, no confidence, no pre-season to speak of). Next season is when I really expect us to start taking this league by storm, Until then, I am enjoying the ride.

Because in my opinion he had a poor game. To be fair as our skipper I rather have Jaidi which is a much better player with a much greater reputation.

Absolutley agree with that, for the 1st time in ages it feels GOOD to be a Saints fan, I would love us to get into the playoffs this season, but to be realistic, safe up the table for this season would be something to celebrate - any more, a bonus :D

I note a change in me which has occurred. I didn't have a niggly feeling that it could all go wrong! Years of being used to us losing in the cup against lower division opposition seems to be on the turn. I felt certain that we were going to win and would have been very surprised if we hadn't.

And quite nice to see a discussion about that we may be conceding too many, whilst we actually keep winning. AP will be very aware of the situation and will eventually tighten up the defense, but as I keep going on about: As a manager, your team is always a compromise between scoring and conceding. When this season started we couldn't score. Now we do, and the trick is to tighten up without losing that ability, which is not an easy job. But I'm certain that AP is on to it.

No, you are quite correct TDD. But let's leave the details of how Saints could do better for an hour or two. All people want to do at present is to be pleased with the win.

What, exactly, is there to be disappointed about, pray tell? Did we win? Did we? If you want me to start wailing and thrashing about because of an unfortunate own goal and a penalty - have you actually seen it?? - that was never a pen, then sorry, ain't gonna happen. I will look at my half full glass and look forward to round 3 whilst you or anybody else chooses to see the dark side of everything. There are some people in this world who are only happy when they have something - anything - to moan about or criticise. Unashamedly, I am not one of them.

All true the above statements but it is very strange that we cannot keep a clean sheet. Will Bartman assist in this as he does attempt to dominate his area more than Kelvin does..great shot stopper that he is?

3rd round here we come , not bothered at all we concided those goals , the penalty was harsh to say the least .

In the past how many times have we F***ed up away from home to a smaller team , we are scoring goals , confidence in the team seems good and we have not lost an away game since Swindon .... lets get a decent team at home in 3rd round ...

A win is a win, glad to be in the hat for the 3rd round, havn't really followed the game so not gonna comment on the performance, but I am a bit concerned that we seem incapable of keeping a clean sheet, yes we are winning games, buts it always 2-1 or 3-1 or 3-2, just for once it would be nice to see a 0 in the goals against column

Wow, didn't think i'd ever see Saints fans act like such spoiled brats. Wahh wahh we only won 3-2, just enjoy the fact that we can win games nowadays when this time last year we would have lost 2-0 to a lower league team putting in a lazy inept performance...

Agree, I like a good many others have started to enjoy my football again even if we are in league 1. We won today scored three again can't ask for better than that, the two Northampton scored an OG and an iffy pen you can't help that. And what makes it all the sweeter we have won away and the Skates lost at home you can't ask for a better weekend.

I thought it was a terrible performance from Southampton. We got lucky on several occasions, had Northampton actually had a decent striker they would have easily won.

Bialkowski came for a couple of crosses that Kelv wouldn't which was good to see but he still looks very risky. The way he came charging out when Perry had the ball under control was poor and we were lucky not to pay.

I thought Dean Hammond done pretty good in the first half, but had a poor second half. No way did his 'goal' go past the line.

Still not convince by Papa Waigo - he scored a good header and hit a brilliant cross for the 2nd, but he was very poor and hardly took his man on. Not to mention when he was one on one - he was hyped up by the fans and the club, he isn't ever going to live up to that hype imo.

I was also suprised to see Pardew pick Jaidi in the team - he was awful against Brighton - mainly because we had 3 games in one week. Lets hope he doesn't do the same performance against Wycombe.

On a plus side though, Lallana seems to get better and better every game. Thought he was quality tonight and yet again got a goal. Very impressive from Lallana this season - lets hope he stays in January.

Overall - It was nice to get another win and keep the confidence in the squad high, we made it hard for ourselves and didn't exactly play to our full potential, which is good signs as we still manage to see them off. In recent years - Southampton have gone to League Two grounds and have lost, this season that isn't happening.

It would be nice to get a couple of cleansheets but still a win is a win.

We probably could keep a clean sheet if we stopped attacking so much but I doubt 0-0 would be very popular! I don't think we're good enough (yet!) to 'have our cake and eat it too!'.I'll settle for 3-2 wins anyday.

Did you see the game?

If you did, what parts of his game did you think were poor today?

And what parts of his game did you think warranted calling him a ****?

And what parts of his game did you think implied that he should not longer be our captain, less than 2 weeks after he was appointed?

You don't get any extra points or a bye for a clean sheet. Winning is winning. Excellent result at a banana skin location. Good work lads, keep it up.

Very banana skin, seeing as we have already won there once this season

Seems to me our team is too gallant or fair. We dont like thrashing teams, so we deliberately let them back into the game after tw*tting them all over the place...

We didnt mate we won at home...but get your point.

How many games over the years have we lost like this one?

A win is a win...I would rather us win 3-2 each week then see us go out ultra defensive and get 0-0's.

Yes a clean sheet would be nice but whilst we are winning I don't give a dam.

Nice positive post Alps keep it up.

Gave away a needless penalty and scored a crap own goal. Very similar to Gobern's performance against Bristol Rovers in the first round of FA cup. If Gobern were poor on that night, Hammond was better but similar to him just now.

Why I don't want him to be our skipper? Just pure preference. I think Jaidi must be a better skipper and if I am the manager I will give the armband to Jaidi.

And thank God you're not. Jaidi is too quiet to be a captain IMO. Hammond talks and controls.

Did you not think the OG was unfortunate and the penalty a very harsh decision?

As for the comparison to Gobern's cameo in the Bristol game, playing out of position and out of his depth only because of that. I won't even dignify it with a response

Tell that to Charlton ;)

The pont is we won - I could list all the places we haven't in the early rounds of the FA Cup, Rotherham under Strachan springs to mind...

We won, that's all that matters. Winning is good for us and the more of it we do the better we'll get.

First people complained because we lost, now we win, so they complain we let goals in...

Know what that makes them? Me too. :)

May not have been our best performance today, but we got the job done. Lallana was class again, but thought Perry looked shaky at the back. Hammond had an average game along wit pretty much everyone else. Rickie looks a bit more like his normal self which is good. Also good to see Murty get 90minutes! Thought the movement and free-flowing passing wasn't there today but to be fair to Northampton they made it tough for us.

Onto Tuesday now and hopefully 3 points!

Different competiton, different venue, but another win and frankly its great to be a Saints fan.

Very strange atmosphere (can't remember sitting down at an away match when 3-0 up ever!) but we did the job and we are in the hat. Lallana was outstanding.
