Saint Without a Halo Posted 29 November, 2009 Share Posted 29 November, 2009 That is a lovely link for the Jimmy Gabriel goal, but 1974? I do not think so! Mods, why, when I try to use an apostrophe, do I open up the Quick Find (links only) tab in the bottom left of my screen? Agreed 74 we lost 2-0 to Manu at home and were relegated (with Man u and Crystal Palace) at the end of the season (1st season of 3 down and guess who was third from bottom?) Also both Gabriel and Davies had been moved on by 74 which by thre way was Mcmenemy's first season! This video is one or two years earlier

It was Norwich - not Palace who went down with us in 1974. We always get relegated with Norwich!!!

If I remember rightly, while we were winning 3 - 0 at Everton we were waiting on whether Birmingham won? If they had only drawn then they would have dropped instead of us. And Birmingham's last game? Norwich! http://www.statto.com/football/stats/results/1974-04-
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 29 November, 2009 Share Posted 29 November, 2009 S'right Sooooooul Boy, Ron had already gone before '74, Gabriel too I think?? Certainly big Ron was playing..err....elsewhere. But we forgive him . having left for them in July '73. Jimmy left in July '72 for Bompey. All stats courtesy of Duncan Holley/Gary Chalk - In That Number. EastleighSoulBoy Posted 29 November, 2009 Share Posted 29 November, 2009 I remember it well!! What a sad day. Norwich and us!! we seem to be locked in some deathly embrace - when we get relegated, so do they!! I remember that day only too well, my first visit to Liverpool. All the 'Old Boys' (crumbs, I'm an 'old boy ' now!) deathly silent, glued to their transistor radios. Then the tears fell, silent at first but then with a few sniffles. Then out came the hip flasks to stifle the tears. We stopped somewhere near Oxford and those old boys went and got royally p!55ed.
corsacar saint Posted 29 November, 2009 Share Posted 29 November, 2009 We drew 1-1, at home to Man Utd, 3 games before end of season - 1973/1974. I saw the game , over 30,000there and we totally outplayed them. Mick Channon for us, and Jim McCalliog penalty for them. Saints, United and Norwich went down. I am sure that Duncan can confirm this. I used to have a Saints website with all the clubs results season by season, but changed computers and lost the link. Ron Davies had left the club a couple of years before relegation. You for one are one that I would not argue that with FFS Funny, I showed Big Ron that goal, he described it like it was yesterday BEFORE HE WATCHED IT, terrific 'Saints memory' and does not remember much about Chester, Luton, Norwich or pompers. He does recall his time at Man U and in the States tho'.
Chez Posted 1 December, 2009 Share Posted 1 December, 2009 Good work. Might be nice if the club did what they did for Channon recently and honour another ledge... probably suggested elsewhere, but wouldn't it be nice if the club got him over for the 125 year anniversary thing? Yes I was there at the Dell that day we were a good side really that year top 6 at Christmas then nothing went right got in Ossie but he could not score. I went to Everton for the last match which we won but other results did not go our way and we were relegated - the first team third from bottom to do so I think. I remember that match quite well.Channon scored almost straight from kick off and we battered them for the rest of the second half but could not find that second goal. Ron returned that September and captained Pompey. He ran out to the centre circle, the remaining Pompey players held back and he received a tremendous welcome despite playing for the skates. TijuanaTim Posted 2 December, 2009 Author Share Posted 2 December, 2009 Quick Update: Encouraged the Big Fella to go to Social Security today with his documents and marriage license...'why you may ask?' So that he can get a renewed copy of his Permanent Resident Alien ID (AKA Green Card), which he lost sometime ago. With said Green Card Ron can 1. get a New Mexico driver's license and 2. more importantly can travel outside the US i.e. TO ENGLAND!! Small steps.
