Wes Tender Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 I once saw the Saints play at Giants stadium, in New Jersey, in front of 75,000 fans. This stadium is home to two American football teams, the New York Jets and the New York Giants. So, we have two teams from New York, playing their home games in a different state. The stadium is being replaced in 2010 by the Meadowlands Stadium, modelled on the Allianz Stadium in Munich, right down to the changing colour of the stadium and the potential sponsor of the new building (Allianz btw, for $30M, although the Jewish lobby in New York frightened them off). This is worth a read. Maybe our esteemed German owner will show the same Germanic pragmatism as they have in Munich. I have a feeling the "little Englanders" we have for a fanbase will happily p! $$ on any bonfire he lights and watch with pleasure as Pompey go out of business and we languish outside the Premiership for another 20 years. Arsenal have shown that to make money and be successful you need a large crowd going every week. This part of the South could easily support 40,000 plus crowds for Premiership football, rock concerts and national games. Meanwhile, Eastleigh Borough Council!!! spunk £32M on a hotel at the Rosebowl, where they are ecstatic if 20,000 turn up and the average gate for a league game is about 2,000.... You contradict yourself in this post. The original premise, is based on your assertion that many of the fans along the M27 corridor will go to watch both teams. Therefore it follows logically by your reasoning that if the Skates were to go out of business, many of those fans, especially to the West side of Portsmouth would start going to watch us instead. So it is actually in our interests to have the Skates cease to exist, although it would be a dull World without their rivalry. Anyway, as several others have already pointed out, the concept might work if the two football teams are housed within the same city, but I don't exactly see a comparable list of clubs from separate cities, although no doubt you would see us as ground-breaking innovators. However, there are several good reasons why this has not seriously been taken up by other clubs in neighbouring cities, historical rivalries, transportation problems and local pride being some of them.
doggface Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 a few interesting points and a few barmy ones- but it would never work and never happen keep the bluefew in the shack with the **** with the bell (anything else would just not be the same)
View From The Top Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 I'm still interested to hear of two clubs playing the same sport, in cities 16 miles apart, who share a stadium out of choice.

Matthew Le God Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 What destroys GM's plan more than anything... Imagine what would happen if Saints at any point in the future ever played Pompey again away from home. It would mean a game at St Mary's in Southampton with 28,000 Pompey fans and only 4,000 Saints fans in their own stadium and the players in the away dressing room.
Dalek2003 Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 Pompey would want their stadium close to a caravan park.
sfcuk fan Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 Out of interest .... What happens when AC Milan play Inter Milan ? Who is home and who is away ? .
sfcuk fan Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 Dundee and Dundee United 16 yards apart  is that picture for real ? or very well edited ? .
Matthew Le God Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009  is that picture for real ? or very well edited ? . Yes, it is real. They really are that close.
Marsdinho Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 Out of interest .... What happens when AC Milan play Inter Milan ? Who is home and who is away ? . Depends... If its AC Milan V Inter Milan.....then AC are at home. If its Inter Milan V AC Milan.....then Inter are at home. HTH
oxfordshire_saint Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 To be honest, the original argument is flawed, because none of those ground-shares work out particularly well: San Siro - apart from a few games a season, the thing is always half empty. Neither club particularly want to stay there anymore and are both looking at individual projects. Despite it's iconic appearance and sheer size, it's a dump. Allianz Arena - 1860 playing there is a joke. Their attendances are poor and they had to sell their 50% stake in the stadium to Bayern as they were facing some serious financial problems Maracana - a big decaying bowl that a few teams inhabit out of necessity. For some games a lot of those clubs do actually have their own stadiums, especially when playing in the Rio State Championship, which is a bit of a non-event. Brazilian football is probably best left off any list being used to make your point as it is corrupt, poorly organised and dangerous. Luzhniki Stadium - Spartak are a nomadic club and are looking to build their own ground. Torpedo only use it for big matches (as do CSKA for Champs League matches) but actually have their own smaller ground where most league matches take place. So really, none of those ground shares actually benefit BOTH clubs, it's a severely poor argument, especially when you add it to a lot of the issues people have raised in previous posts.
oxfordshire_saint Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 Depends... If its AC Milan V Inter Milan.....then AC are at home. If its Inter Milan V AC Milan.....then Inter are at home. HTH Yup, they actually have 3 changing rooms too, Inter, AC and away (4 if you want to be pedantic and count the refs!)
September Saint Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 Don't see the point in this post. If we were still at the Dell I could see where you're coming from. Even if we were asked about groundsharing for 1-2 years when Fratton Pk v2.0 was being built, the Police would (quite rightly) veto it. Any "economies of scale" would be offset by extra policing costs. I'm afraid this speaks volumes about both sets of fans.
scotty Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 In real terms, the idea that Portsmouth and Southampton are separate cities died when the M27 was built. For all practical purposes, we are a conurbation that should be known as Solent City, two suburbs, 15 minutes by car, apart... Thats just not the case. Following that logic, we can get to Winchester in ten minutes on the M3, is that part of "Solent City" as well? Southampton and Portsmouth are two different cities, geographically and culturally.
St Landrew Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 (edited) The idea of a Solent City may well be something for the future, but let's not start breaking down the wall of resistance by getting the two city clubs to ground share. Even if Pompey and Saints were on the best of terms it wouldn't be the greatest idea. Getting fans to stadia is bad enough, when the charging is so high, but to ask one set to travel an average 19 miles, every fortnight [not 15 btw, just Google Map city centre to city centre to find out] to a city in which they have little or no association with, and the little may well be bad anyway, and you have a rather silly recipe. Add in the possible repercussions of the odd few Saints fans being around St Marys when Pompey are playing, and it all just seems so unnecessary. Perhaps in a few generations time, when the urban areas have possibly/inevitably closed the gaps even tighter [the villages and towns inbetween might oppose that, of course], there might be a call for centralising a Solent City stadium out by Segensworth roundabout. But I'm trying to find reasons here for making the change, and I'm finding it rather hard to see them. Frankly, at the moment, it's a non-issue. Edited 28 November, 2009 by St Landrew

Saint Without a Halo Posted 29 November, 2009 Posted 29 November, 2009 (edited) Pompey fans really aren't going to like having to leave their own city to watch their home games. Its an idea, but never in a million years can I see Pompey playing their home games at St Marys, I can imagine now the trouble it would cause between fans. Agreed but not only is the fans an issue, don't think Southampton city council or indeed citizens of southampton would look forward to visits by Pompey fans every two weeks! Interesting idea from an economic stand point but I believe it is a non starter! Edited 29 November, 2009 by Saint Without a Halo
Matthew Le God Posted 29 November, 2009 Posted 29 November, 2009 Interesting idea from an economic stand point Not when you take the cost of policing over 20k Pompey fans in a foreign city to them, 20 times or more a year.

Jack Posted 29 November, 2009 Posted 29 November, 2009 In case GM isn't actually taking the p***: FFS. We built a stadium 8 years ago, which is bigger/better than at least 5 prem team's stadiums, and most of the championship's stadiums. Portsmouth are s***, can't fill a 21000 capacity stadium in the premier league, and are getting relegated meaning that their attendances will drop again. In summary, they are s***, they are c***s, and they do not deserve to move out of that shack they call a football stadium.
