derry Posted 24 November, 2009 Share Posted 24 November, 2009 At a meeting today the city council took the decision that Portsmouth would not bid for games in the world cup. Bearing in mind the previous announcement could it be that the club/city council would now be in a position to step in. I think there is a deadline for the application. So does that mean it's currently a two horse race between Bristol and Plymouth?

krissyboy31 Posted 24 November, 2009 Share Posted 24 November, 2009 Yes, absolutely! So does that mean it's currently a two horse race between Bristol and Plymouth? Why should it be? There is more than one North East bid. More than one North West bid. More than one Yorkshire bid and more than one Midlands bid. I doubt Plymouth is a goer but Bristol, as long as they go ahead with the stadium, will almost definitely get the nomination. That still means there is room for a bid in the central south. swannymere Posted 24 November, 2009 Share Posted 24 November, 2009 £20M is peanuts compared to the amount of exposure and prestige that comes with hosting, i bet all the hospitality trades are going ferkin' mental.

I was under the impression that one southern spot was up for grabs and they were currently the contenders. Admittedly, that view was formed from reading things on here so it's probably wrong! sambosa75 Posted 24 November, 2009 Share Posted 24 November, 2009 Presumably this would mean actually hosting some games as well? In that case we are in by far the strongest position of all the southern club outside London. Instead of actually having to build a stadium anywhere else, all we require is an extra 8,000-10,000 seats to become eligible. I seem to remember reading after the fans forum Cortese saying the minute Pompey pull out we'll be ready to step in. Wouldnt it be great so see some World Cup games at St Marys? As for not winning the bid, I think we have as good a chance as any. If its in Europe, it will be us I think.

Merge them together to form Bristol United and they be the size of us in League 1. Unless they have a really popular Rugby team a 40K stadium in Bristol would be pointless. As for Plymouth, thats a joke.
Matthew Le God Posted 24 November, 2009 Share Posted 24 November, 2009 The FA seem to want regional distribution. Possible it would be Bristol vs Plymouth for a South West bid so any potential Saints bid wouldn't be in competition with them.

So there was "more than one bid" but the region was the "South West".
aintforever Posted 24 November, 2009 Share Posted 24 November, 2009 Maybe we could merge with the Portsmouth bid, we supply the World class stadia, 5 star hotels and airport, they provide a location for the Romanian and Irish fans to park their caravans. Don't be silly. The Irish will get knocked out of the qualifiers when a clearance hits a passing bird and rebounds into their net as they find yet another way to enhance their reputation of being serially unlucky

4737_carlin Posted 24 November, 2009 Share Posted 24 November, 2009 Southampton council does not have £20million to invest in such an operation. That said i dont know all the ins and outs of this investor figure and i fail to see how the FA want such financial guarantees. Bristol and Plymouth are next in line anyway. Its council driven not SFC

Its council driven not SFC Funny that, they find money to spunk on ridiculous schemes and initiatives, as well as overpaying their councillors to the point where it could almost be classed as robbery. Regardless, there would actually be plenty more for visiting fans to do in Portsmouth than there would in Southampton - but we'd have til 2018 to change that...
