Monkey Hangers 1-3 Saints - Reaction

Arizona

Damn that Rickie Lambert! I had us down for a 2-1 win in the prediction league!! ;)

Well done to the players, PArds and especially all those who travelled up to give their support!

Special mentions must go to:

Lallana - another brace under his belt. This boy has seriously come good!

Kelvin - for keeping us in it with 2 super saves at 2-1. Get well soon Kelv!

Trotters - for a very timely booking! ;)

Pards - great subs to close out the game.

Bart - for keeping a clean sheet. May it be the first of many!!

Wotton - for putting some steel into midfield and protecting the defence. We always seem to play better defensively with him the team! Don't you all agree? ;)

Just got to be happy with the score. Once upon a time I would see one nil and think,'That is it, we've spunked it.' Now its, 'It aint over yet,Boyo!!!!"

Shame I am on a course tomorrow or I would walk into work, look at my two skate Humunculae and sack them again, just to take them back on again because I am so happy, and I feel sorry for them losing their manager.

As the man said, woo-oot.

But I am afeared that Lallana will be a tempting target come January. I only hope he sees what Pardew told him is the truth and he stays. I must feel better to be playing first team football, scoring for fun and getting screams of adulation from the fans, than being stuck in the reserves and not seeing the light of day, even if the cash is good.

Rambling now. Gotta go

Lambert Southampton 13

Barnard Southend 12

Beckford Leeds United 12

Holt Norwich 10

Forster Brighton 9

Lallana Southampton 9

Jackson Gillingham 9

Rhodes Huddersfield 9

That makes excellent reading - Southampton players scoring lots of goals!

Great result, well done to the team and the fans who made the trip.

Good result just what we needed, wish Lambert hadn't scored as had 2-1 in the prediction league :p. been at work tonight so just reading some reports sounded like we had to weather a bit of a storm for 25 mins & then got into the game, Sounds like Lallana had another storming game. Shame about Davis, but gives Bart a chance to prove his worth at last.

Credit to the fans who made the trip, hope they drive carefully & get back home safe & sound as the rain on the motorway coming home from work was dreadful, so take care all you Saints out there tonight.

Just back from the game. Blustery, difficult game. Saints support - massive. Respect to all those there.

Really? How did you get back so soon? I thought I would probably be the second person back after droping Stu home, but looks like you beat me as I only got back about half an hour ago! I assume you haven't just got back to the Isle of Man?!!

Anyway, I enjoyed the match tonight - our support was absolutely brilliant. I would say that our supporters were singing for at least 80 of the 97 minutes of the game (allowing for injury time at the end of each half).

In terms of quality, would say some of the team were a bit disappointing in the first half, but the second half display was great.

Man of the Match was Lallana without a doubt, with other notable contributions from Lambert, Connolly, Jaidi and Davis. Lallana's goal was an absolute peach!

Before he limped off Davis made a couple of wonder saves that kept us ahead. In fact he ws possibly injured making the second of these. If it weren't for those saves, th match could have turned out very differently.

Schneiderlin was the biggest let-down unfortunately. He contributed absolutely nothing until the start of the second half and it was no surprise that he was the one substituted.

James had a poor first half but a better second half.

Harding was pretty exposed in the first half, but it was very noticeable that Pardew made a couple of tactical changes at half time and Hammond and Lallana between them gave him some cover in the second half.

From the Hartlepool forum:

Southampton no.20 completely ran the game, created havoc everytime he got the ball, basically we could'nt do nowt with him, he scored two and was outstanding.

Yeah Lallana was quality for them. We turned up in the 1st half, But were very drab in the second.

Just got in ...10/10 ...Not Pretty but Good Job well done.

Good Support

10/10 to the bloke behind me ...delayed....YOU FAT BAST**D...quality.

10/10 Lallana windmill after goal ...he ran all the way down to us and his reaction at final whistle. UP THE SAINTS.

(Do worry Connelly, class that he is, is determental to team aka Kevin Phillips 2003-2004, Lambert clearly stuggles with him)

Just to add to my comments above, I would say both the Full Time Report and Alan Pardew's comments on the OS are pretty accurate records of the game.

In terms of player ratings, I would offer the following:

Davis 8 (Two brilliant saves just before limping off helped secure the win)

Murty 6 (Struggled to get up to speed in the first half)

Trotman 6 (Too many hoof bals in the first half, but better in the second)

Jaidi 8 (A tower of strength throughout - extremely assured)

Harding 5 (although his difficulties in the first half were more due to tactical inadequacy, so maybe that's harsh!)

Schneiderlin 2 ('though I may be being generous there!)

James 4 (although much better in the second half so I may be being harsh!)

Hammond 7 (Workman-like performance in first half, more influential in second)

Lallana 10 (What more an be said?! I just hope we can keep him in January)

Lambert 9 (Worked hard and deserved his goal - even if it was a bit fluky!)

Connolly 9 (Deserved a goal - a constant threat and brilliant composure to turn and shoot in tight spots)

Subs

Wotton 6 (Didn't do a huge amount, but couldn't be much worse than Schneiderlin!)

Bart 7 (Had very little to do but coped fine)

Antonio 5 (Very clumsy and fortunate not to get booked. Didn't offer much threat.)

Listening to Radio Solent, it seemed that the awful blustery wind made it a bit of a lottery and Merrington lambasted the players for not being able to make enough allowance for the strength of the wind and hitting the ball too hard. However, it seems that when Hartlepool were playing with the wind behind them, they found it even more difficult than we did, making it our efforts excusable.

Beyond that and contrary to some on here who have blamed Davis for poor keeping in the last few days posts, he made two cracking saves which otherwise might have changed the course of the match. Merrington was asserting that Davis was worth an extra 10 points or so a season. It will be interesting to see how we fare with Bialkowski in his place until the New Year.

And what was that melee about towards the end? Bad tackle on Lallana, apparently and then all the players piled in. Stupid of Trotman to get involved when he is facing a ban now for the booking he received. What is the position with that, when his next match is the Cup match that his club don't want him to play anyway?

I feel vindicated now for asserting earlier that we are a better team than Hartlepool. See, just because we would have been equal with them if it hadn't been for the ten point deduction, doesn't mean that they are as good as us. As I said earlier, their matches have been kinder to them opposition wise and we have done better than them against the top teams in the division.

Just got back and journey back through torrential rain.

Thought Saints still looked shaky at the back in the first half in difficult windy conditions with Harding looking poor with his positioning.

Otherwise a good solid team performance with top man being Lallana. With Lallana, Connolly and Lambert we should beat most teams in this league.

Looked like more than 600 odd away fans in a packed looking away end.

I agree we are a good team but we have not beaten many clubs in the top 10 which is the only worrying point for me

1 Leeds United 17 25 42

2 Charlton 18 15 36

3 Colchester 18 15 33

4 Norwich 18 13 32

5 Huddersfield 18 19 30

6 MK Dons 18 -1 29

7 Swindon 17 1 28

8 Bristol Rovers 18 -3 28

9 Walsall 18 4 27

10 Millwall 18 8 26

Let hope we can beat Walsall

The only team in that top 10 that has beaten us on an even playing field is Bristol Rovers, and according to the consensus on here, that was close and damned lucky.

Huddersfield and Swindon beat us during our post Lowe/Dutch duo hangover period.

At the same time, we whupped MK Dons's arses for them.

Let's look at it from the glass half full aspect. Not many teams in the top ten have beaten us. Only Swindon, Huddersfield and Bristol Rovers have managed it and Huddersfield and Swindon caught us early on when we weren't up to full strength and confidence was lower because we were fighting to shake off the ten point penalty. We have since beaten Bristol Rovers in the Cup. We have drawn and beaten the second team, Charlton, one of those matches being a cup game. The teams in third and fourth position couldn't beat us.

Before Davis' injury, I would have said that we would also beat Leeds, but since his injury, I'll wait and see how Bialkowski fares before making a judgement.

I don't think that we should fear anybody in this division. I suspect that most of the teams fear us.

I dont disagree with what you are saying but to succeed we must beat the top teams which we have yet to do regularly for a number of reasons.

Got back to Leeds last night at 11.30pm, my 11-month-old boy woke up three times in the night, then my alarm went at 6.20am for early shift at work. Dreamy. Rain on the motorway near biblical going through Middlesbrough. Hope everyone got back ok as I certainly couldn't see much out of the windscreen!

It certainly wasn't pretty but well worth the trip for the excellent support and fabulous performance from Lallana. His second goal was sensational. The wind was fiercely against us in the second half and thought our defence coped brilliantly, although, that said, Hartlepool were abject considering they must be used to the gales whipping off the north sea. Just seen Lambert's goal again on Sky - utterly hilarious. A gutsy, unspectacular win on the sort of night the Saints of old would probably have slumped to a pathetic defeat after going an early goal down. See y'all at Elland Road.

Great win - perhaps people will stop overreacting when we lose one game now. We're not the Saints of old - this is a new Saints, the Saints that have quality and can win games when they go behind instead of capitulating because of the reliance on youth.

It's a very good win on paper, sounds like the Tellytubby combination is working wonders. More of the same please people.

As for Kelvin, big blow but I expect and trust Bart to make the step up.

So what do you get, South-West from Plymouth? If you don't get South Today, it's channel 984 on Sky. If you don't have Sky, then you can get it on the Hampshire web page about an hour after transmission.

Yep we get Spotlight from the green army.

Guess i'll have to get it on tinternet, what time is it broadcast?

Got home at 4am :smt015 but it was well worth it!

First of all our support was fantastic, making loads of noise and getting right behind the team. Brilliant effort by our away support who I do believe are one of the best in the league.

We didn't stop singing at 1-0 down and the team didn't stop battling, and we deserved to equalise. Although Hartlepool looked like they were getting the ball down and playing it better than us, we did seem to show better credentials than them in both attacking and defending.

Lallana's second goal seems like a contender for goal of the month, it was ace, a really sound effort, and it really pushed us on. For me, Lallana was man of the match, he was everywhere and has really come into his own this season.

Lambert still didn't seem 100% match fit, but had a better game than the last couple he has played, and his goal came down to a comedy keeping error, which was quite funny.

Does anyone know the extent of Kelvin's injury? It seemed to me like he cleared the ball then felt his leg, Bart seemed ready to come on anyway, the physio came on and KD walked off. Hope it's not serious. He made two fantastic saves in quick succession before going off.

Don't want to single out any bad performances but Harding looked out of position a few times, which led to them counter attacking on their right. James again did not impress, he was playing right midfield and just did not really cut it. His crosses and corners were fine but he just didn't have a very good game.

Shame for Connolly not to get on the scoresheet, he looked lively again and linked up well with players around him, and he still says there is more to come from him.

The game wasn't very pretty but we did what we needed to do, and did it well in those conditions. Bit concerned that yet another goal we have conceded came from a cross though.

It was a gutsy performance on a gusty night and we deserved the win. Bloody glad we did win or the trip home would have seemed a lot longer. Again, well done to all those that went.

Just back after spending the night in Hartlepool and driving back today.

We started slowly, but got better as the game went on, I have just one gripe, give that is was blowing an absolute gale, and the wind was swirling around in the stadium, why oh why did we keep hoofing it forward, especially first half, the wind meant the flight oif the ball in the air was so unpredictable, so get it on the floor ffs.

Having said that, we were superb second half, Pardew once again showed that he has a lot of tactical awareness, bringing on Paul Wotton who was tasked with sitting in front of the back four and clearing our lines, which he did to tremendous effect, every ball played forward Wotton was under it to get it away, and he had a fantastic second half.

As already stated, Lalana ran the show going forward, 2 great goals.

Finally very weel done to every to everyone that went, the suport was fantastic, just a shame the home fans were so quiet.
