Hartlepool Build Up Thread

It does disrupt the routines and hanging around a hotel lounge on Tuesday after I presume some training session somewhere will sap the will a bit.

Nonsense. Someone posted a picture of the local beach on the other thread.

What more could they ask for?

Off to York soon to collect Michelle & S - and then off to Sedgefield for the racing. For those driving - just as you come off the A19 to head into Hartlepool - there is a services area with a MacDonlads & KFC - just in case you need a drink and a quick bite!

Really fancy a win tonight - be prepared it is going to be a bit blustery - and could be wet. It's coming in from the west - but it may have cleared by kick off. At least it's not coming from the east off the north sea...bbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

In the Echo yesterday it had Pardew saying that he was pleased that Nicola Cortese has arranged a plane for them to travel up in. Hopefully this means it is a private jet, and not a bog standard flight, which would then mean there would be less hassle at the airport, more comfort on the flight, and it would be a better all round journey for the players.

Major respect for all those making the trip for today's game. You take the meaning of support to another level and fair play to all of you for that. I hope the team reward you during and after the game and just in case they take heed of the gesture given by the Wigan players to their travelling support. Apparently, they are reimbursing everyone who went to the game on Sunday! It's a tough game tonight but hopefully not that tough! Enjoy it.

I cannot see that the players would be "tired" after the trip to Hartlepool. They are going up by plane after all and should be like coiled springs when they come off, ready to give all for the cause. Its the fans that travel all that way, that I admire.

Who'd want to be a monkey in Hartlepool .... if they don't hang you they'll freeze your brass nuts off instead

I guess it depends if the flight is a private or public flight? If the latter then it can be energy sapping and also it disrupts player's routines which can have an adverse effect on performance. I would actually consider it worse if they flew up yesterday and apart from training spend a day killing time in the hotel. I suspect some of our team will need oxygen to get through a long period of inactivity without their games consoles.

I agree that fans have got it harder but they don't have to run out at 7.45pm after a day of potential 'drift'. The fans are having a great trip without the reponsibility whereas the players need to deal with the mental mindgames as well as the physical challenge and I dont think it should be underestimated.

This surely is a prime example of why away games are so difficult within your own league. A Saturday game in Hartlepool after a week long break then yes the players maybe chomping at the bit but the same starting 11 as Saturday just 3 days after an energy sapping game against one of the best teams in the league and you should start to lower you sights a little.

Didn't Hartlepool play on Saturday then? Won't they have to kill time during the day too? And surely you meant that it was a match against a mid-table team who have lost as many matches home or away as they have won? We go into the match with the same factors as them regarding tiredness from Saturday, but have an hour or so on a flight and a short spell at an airport in addition. It isn't as if it is a gruelling journey or that any of the players suffer from Mr T or Bergkamp syndrome. Although we shouldn't take anything for granted, we are a much better team than them.

Miss the point entirely Wes and your logic overly simplistic. If the fixture was reversed and we were at home tonight do you think I would be making the points I have done?

We still don't know if they flew up yesterday and stayed overnight (Derry) or if a private flight had been booked for them today which would obviously ease the stress of travel and hanging around time. I think we are at the moment on a par with Hartlepool as someone has already suggested regards our respective points totals so your much better team than them statement is not exactly backed up.

Once again Wes you appear to be unnecessarily confrontational and more to do with the poster than the post itself. Shame, because I use to give your opinions some thought.

On Solent yesterday morning AP said a plane had been arranged by NC so one would think it was a private flight and they flew up yesterday.

AP said NC had arranged for the flight in his post match interview Saturday. From that I presumed that the MALI exec jet would be taken for a spin but he may have been just saying NC has arranged for a charter.

Let's examine what you wrote a bit more closely.

As you say, you are not sure whether they flew up yesterday or not, or whether it was a private flight or not, so frankly any opinions as to what the effects of the flight might be (minimal, I would have thought in any event) are conjecture. Normal routine for an away match would have involved a coach trip which would often be longer than this flight, so quite why this is a disruption of their normal routine, is beyond me. Also, even if they flew up yesterday, I'm sure that they would have made provision for some light training to tune up and avoid boredom. I very much doubt that they would be sitting around in the hotel.

As for the assertion that Hartlepool are one of the best teams in the league, an examination as to whom they have played and who we have played, will show you that on balance, (although we did not have a proper pre-season and did not have a few of the current players early on), nevertheless, we have not played against some of the teams lower down the division that they have and have fared rather better than them against some of the higher placed teams than they have. We are the better team and should win against a team like them. Just because we would have been at the same level had we not had the ten point penalty, has more to do with who we have both played and the lack of a pre-season than anything else.

If you wish to conclude that I posted this response just because it was you that wrote it, then you are wrong. Am I not allowed to argue or debate anything contentious that is posted by you without you thinking that it is some sort of personal vendetta? I assure you that I would have responded in the same way no matter who had posted it.

I think you'll find Heartlepool is a beautiful, picturesque and historic town, certainly far more beautiful than Southampton and with a far prouder history. Try living in the real world, idiot.

I've been there. It's not. If you want a beautiful, picturesque and historic town on that stretch of the coast, try Whitby. Hartlepool's one saving grace is that it isn't Middlesbrough.

We will get outplayed and outfought buy a bunch of players no-one has heard of, ala Swindon away.

If the players adopt the same attitude as the knee jerk fans (I'm hoping your comments are more tongue in cheek! LOL), then we're beaten already. I am hoping they have more resiliance. Swindon away was a different team/mentality/early days and one of the worse away games I've ever witnessed (Everton away wasn't much fun when Kevin Campbell walked through our defence & we get hammered 4-1!)

http://www.4thegame.com/matchcentre/premiership/reports/76542/efcsfc.html (for the few of you that may want reminding!)

I hope Murty can get some fitness back and I would like to see Lloyd at centre back so he regain some confidence. However, this will be unlikely with Lloyd needing to offer cover (or to be replaced) for Murty.

Personally, I would play:

Davis

Murty (if fit) - Thomas - Jaidi - Harding

James (or Wotton if James needed for Murty cover)

Waigo - Hammond - Lallana - Mills

Connolly

Subs: Lambert (if needing of a rest to get over his flu/psychological advantage), Antonio (for Waigo), Melis, Trotman, etc.

Shows, we definitely need a ball winning/defensive centre midfielder (esp. for me to have to field Wotton - ideally, 2 x centre midifelders or 1 if James can deputise and we bring in cover at RB for Murty!) & better quality wingers.

I'm with you on this - rest for the cup not the league.

Assuming Murty's fit I'd have him in at right back in a 4-5-1, I'm tempted to drop Morgan as he had a shocker on Saturday and Lambert who seems out of sorts. Waigo in for Antonio on the right since I think he just works better there when we're 4-5-2

                   Davis
Murty Trotman Jaidi Harding
                  Wotton
        Hammond James
Wago Lallana
                  Connolly

Subs: Bart, Lambert, Antonio, Thomas, Mills

EXACTLY as I just posted (re: Morgan and Lambo comments, even Waigo - hadn't read your comments but glad to know they're opinion's shared!

However, not sure about James replacing Morgan but could work. Morgan has been gash and certainly needs dropping, if only as an incentive to improve/competing for places. I do think Connolly could hold his own on his own up front although aerial may be a problem (which means, stop HOOFING it!) and use his pace/play it along the turf (as we should do anyway - take note centre halves, Lloyd...most of the back 8!)

FFS its simple, they went up scheduled yesterday, two nights in hotel and flying back scheduled on Wednesday. Where on earth do you think they are going Pyongyang, it's only Newcastle. Tired, Stress, hanging around in four star hotels and a bit of training, if they don't put in a performance after that sort of pampering they need sorting.

This.

Sagga is our only international striker and must be straining at the leash by now. Lambert isn't even trying now he's got a contract.

I guess you meant Saga is our only international striker apart from Connolly (49 caps for Ireland).

By the way I can confirm that Hartlepool is a dump, I was there a few weeks ago, quite pleasant round the old docks area, nice museum and some smart looking housing near the ground, but get away from that part and it makes Pompey look up market.

I believe we will get a hard thought draw and that in itself will be classed as a decent result.

Whilst we could employ Derren Brown to help get into the minds of the opposition and work his magic mind tricks on our own squad, I'd like to think we will play football and have more of a hard "fought" draw. In fact, I'd like it to be a battle on the pitch which resulted in a win and 3 points (that's what I expect!)

OMG, you're a bag of Christmas cheer!

Or, as most would view it, a plain and simple flight up North. Not much hassle, less time sat on a coach and in traffic. I don't see why sitting in a departure lounge would damage someone's fragile ego or sap their energy any more than sat in a traffic queue on a motorway would make someone suicidal and a bag of nerves...A bizarre post. I dunno, maybe some people are much more delicate and mentally fragile but even our modern day footballers should be able to endure a "arduous" flight of an hour or so! I'd certainly prefer it to a potential 5-7hr coach journey sat in rainy queues at roadworks or in accident tail backs!

Or, struggling to understand your bizarre post! Has little logic. I apologise if that seems confrontational or antagonistic. Just perplexed by your posts. Hope you're feeling ok (not sarcasm intended).

Not Bad...

If Murty is fit & Lambert has got over his virus then I'd go

- - - - - - Davis

Murty Trotman Jaidi Harding

Antonio James Hammond Lallana

- -Connolly - Lambert

Lets hope we get a response from the team tonight, going for a hopeful 2-1 Saints, as we need to get on a run of wins again sooner rather than later.

Perhaps he should stick to reviews of the Arts or commentary on Golf, obviously being a travel advisor is a step too far

AP said NC had arranged for the flight in his post match interview Saturday. From that I presumed that the MALI exec jet would be taken for a spin but he may have been just saying NC has arranged for a charter.

The Radio Solent presenter then went on later to say that it may have sounded like Corteses had arranged a private flight but it was in fact just tickets on a scheduled one. No idea if this morning or yesterday, but dount we'd pay for hotel as well as flights. I presume it was more that Pardew meant Cortese agreed to the expense of a flying.

There are some clubs in this division who'd have to go by coach today, with just an hour or so warm up before the match after a cramped 6 hour journey, never mind private planes. This is the third division when all's said and done.
