Greenridge Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 Why would we want to sign anybody? Ummm...to strengthen the team maybe John I still think Pardew is wrestling with both the personnel and formation as to whom and which combination is best. Personally I'd like to see us get in an 'agile' centre-half as Trottman and Jaidi are too similar for me and leave us very exposed to the ball over the top or threaded through for a pacy attacker.
Manuel Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 Personally I'm not sure we need anyone new at the moment. We've made loads of signings already and I think the players we have should be adequate for the job providing we get the other stuff right, such as tactics, formation, playing as a team, building confidence. Hopefully all that will come.
Master Bates Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 Why would we want to sign anybody? Mentioned (Pardew) on Friday in the Echo that he'd like a loan in before the window closes. Not definite though.
John B Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 Mentioned (Pardew) on Friday in the Echo that he'd like a loan in before the window closes. Not definite though. Surely he has enough players now or is he saying the ones he brought in are not good enough.

hypochondriac Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 Surely he has enough players now or is he saying the ones he brought in are not good enough. I think the problem is that we have a lot of players but hardly any decent ones other than about 14. Look at all the dross we have.
Marsdinho Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 Elliott Ward maybe....???? http://www.coventrycity-mad.co.uk/news/loadnews.asp?cid=TMNW&id=473311

They are not dross they are professional footballers who have a contract with the club Holmes and Saga are good players but are never played Dont get me wrong we will need better players in the future but the squad is OK for League 1 at the moment surely Edited 23 November, 2009 by John B
hypochondriac Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 They are not dross they are professional footballers who have a contract with the club Maybe so but many are clearly not up to league one standard for Southampton. I call them dross because in comparison to our first team they are.
Dellman Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 I'd rather some went out than more came in, AP has made great signings, let them consolidate while removing the people who have an awful past and no future here.
batterseasaint Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 Pardew knows what his best team is at the moment, but if we suffer from injuries and loss of form (Trotman?) we have very little backup. I think the only players on the bench at the moment who Pardew would consider as an adequate replacement are Thomas, Murty and Papa. We need a deeper squad, especially as the games are now coming thick and fast.
DT Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 One that can catch? That would help. Or throw the ball out. Or dominate his box/actually come off his line occassionally.
Wes Tender Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 That would help. Or throw the ball out. Or dominate his box/actually come off his line occassionally. Davis made two superb throw outs on Saturday, but you obviously didn't notice. He also made a good penalty stop, but was unfortunate that the rebound off the post went to the penalty taker. So give me some names of those keepers who you consider have the attributes you have listed and also are good shot stoppers, as I'm sure that you'd want them to have that skill also. They must also be prepared to play at this level too. And your suggestions are....?

John B Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 It looks like Trotman goes back in January so he needs to be replaced. I agree in January but not now
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 Charlton fans warned us about this Please shut the f*** up, you are full of sh1te. What exactly did you expect from this season? automatic promotion? have you any idea what it takes to achieve success after the on and off field bollix of the past few years? this is a fresh new start, we are still in the middle of a very good run, we are playing good football, goals are coming from all over the squad. Please just go and drown yourself you miserable clueless gimp. HTH
Professor Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 Dear Windmill Arm 2 (re prevous post), maybe you should check the forum rules before posting. Back to the thread, Pardew is saying on the OS that loan players can be a bit of a problem, and by implication this may be factor in poor defending recently. It seems unlikely that he will add to the problem but the defence does need attention. Pardew has also made it clear that Murty is first choice RB, so that will help but a permanent signing at CB in January to replace the Trotman loan would make more sense than another loanee. Someone to compliment Jaidi by compensating for his weaknesses would create a stronger partnership than either Trotman or Thomas who are too similar to RJ.
Smirking_Saint Posted 23 November, 2009 Posted 23 November, 2009 Charlton fans warned us about this About what exactly ?? Analysing the squad ?? We need a decent DM, and probably a perm signing for CB. I am now writing off Trotman just yet, he was very much a dominant player for a while. Hopefully just a few bad games. Harding has also had a few bad games, should we dump him ?? IMO pards needs to go back to 4-5-1 from the beginning and change if need be, if it ain't broke and all that. Also, for all his faults i still prefer Papa to antonio.

dubsaint Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 new goalie please Yep i agree, do think thats a weak spot
Smirking_Saint Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 Yep i agree, do think thats a weak spot Mental
DT Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 Mental  No, I don't think he is. There are a few of us now who actually dare to question the skills of a player most on here have wet dreams about. For me, as I have said ad infinitum, his hesitancy at the back causes a big problem with the back four, which is exploited by teams who just look at a few videos. It's like wicket keepers - the best ones you don't notice. It's the ones who do the Match of the Day saves and then **** up the easy ones you want to watch out for. For me, that's Davis. Could we lure Maik Taylor back?

Just concerned that AP has made a few signings now (all good imo) but some (on here) are already talking about some being replaced. I remember reading on the Charlton forum that AP became renowned for trying to fix things by signing a new player. This comment wasn’t made by one Charlton fan but was a general census across the forum. Pardew was as popular as Burley was – some absolutely hated him while some respected his past and hoped he we come good - At Charlton he didn’t. John B made a valid comment earlier “Surely he has enough players now or is he saying the ones he brought in are not good enough.” Bit soon to question his motives as think he is doing a good job thus far.

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 24 November, 2009 Author Posted 24 November, 2009 Thinking about it, didn't someone say recently they'd heard a whisper that we might be after Warren Feeney, if we could move Saga on in January? Maybe we'll try and loan him in before then?

Be good to have Conolly and Lambert competing for the 1st team spot

Saint_clark Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 Surely he has enough players now or is he saying the ones he brought in are not good enough. We have a good team. Now we need to build a good squad.
Thedelldays Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 we must be the only league 1 squad in history to need to spend millions on players/wages to achieve mid table
once_bitterne Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 we must be the only league 1 squad in history to need to spend millions on players/wages to achieve mid table It's nothing new for us. We must be the only CCC team to spend £8m+ in a season on new players but only limp into the playoffs (and only do that as Preston could only manage 1 win in their last 10) and fall at the first hurdle!
John B Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 (edited) We have a good team. Now we need to build a good squad. I still doubt that we can get any really good loan players at the moment but I do agree in the transfer window we need a striker to replace Saga a CB to replace Trottman and a LM as Holmes does not fit Pardew's requirements Edited 24 November, 2009 by John B

Not true - CCC sides regularly spend big without much in return. Cardiff spent £5 million on one player, Ipswich have spent loads and are 2nd bottom, Forest have spent almost 10 million and will spend more in Jan, QPR have spent a fair bit, Sheffield united, WBA ect ect
Wes Tender Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 Richard Wright. Not roy Keane's flavour of the month I wouldn't mind Richard Wright, but I did qualify the guidelines by stating that any prospective alternative would have to be prepared to play at this level. Do you know for a fact that Wright would be prepared to drop down a division? He already did that to go from West Ham to Ipswich, but that is his home town. At 32, he is still is in his prime as a keeper and could still have a few more years at a decent level if he remains fit and injury free.
Window Cleaner Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 we must be the only league 1 squad in history to need to spend millions on players/wages to achieve mid table Not that many millions, not compared to Peterborough or Leicester, mind you their results were far far better.I mean compared to Leicester's last season our results must be considered as p*ss poor.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 I still doubt that we can get any really good loan players at the moment but I do agree in the transfer window we need a striker to replace Saga a CB to replace Trottman and a LM as Holmes does not fit Pardew's requirements To tempt decent/ambitious players to sign we needed to be showing real intent and be well clear of the relegation zone by now. AP would/will have probably found it easier to sign players pre-season with his “I want top 2 this season” chat. Players will not be so easily blinded by words as our position will speak louder than positive chat. Keeping hold of players may also prove tricky as another season (minimum) in L1 looks inevitable now.
Window Cleaner Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 Keeping hold of players may also prove tricky as another season (minimum) in L1 looks inevitable now. I expect at least 3 players to move on in January

Window Cleaner Posted 24 November, 2009 Posted 24 November, 2009 1st team players? 2 in that case, plus at least 1 squad player. Plus Trotman and maybe Mellis as well.
