saint lard Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 (edited) We are a couple of games from getting out of the drop zone,as we were before todays game i admit,i would not be surprised if we are still down there come xmas. It is often said xmas is a pivotal period in the season,if we are still struggling to make headway out of the bottom 4 i will become a tad nervous. I think that reaching the playoffs was always going to be a pipe dream this season,i would be more than happy to be proved wrong however, with the players Pards has brought in there has been a transformation and huge strides made in the right direction but i'm not expecting anyone coming in January to ignite our season further. Defence seriously needs some work however. Time to lower our expectations? Edited 21 November, 2009 by saint lard
chocco boxo Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Just the JPT Final to look forward to then?
alpine_saint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 I have already. I'd settle for not getting relegated.
.comsaint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 We are a "good" side - but not as good as we'd like to think.
sadoldgit Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Yeah, becaue we are as bad as Tranmere and the like. The play offs was not going to be an option after the way we started but we should easliy be midtable come the end of the season. Not that that will stop the wrist slitters wanting Pardew sacked. Funny though, Pearson did worse yet some here hold him in higher esteem...go figure.
opthomps Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 seems like we are currently a top 6 side -10 points and - a bad first few games, so that will prob get us mid table unless form changes again. Im happy that at least the games have goals and are entertaining.
exit2 Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 5th from bottom is my target and has been since day one. Anything else is a bonus!
Saintjersey Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 I will be happy to stay up, 1 point from 2 home games is not good. Tbh play offs was never really an option after our poor start.
alpine_saint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Funny though, Pearson did worse yet some here hold him in higher esteem...go figure. Have a look at the Championship table, you obsessed troll.

Dalek2003 Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Before the Brighton game I said that our priority must be safety and we should forget giving ourselves fancy labels. One target at a time, it must first of all be to haul ourselves out of the relegation zone.
ericofarabia Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 5th from bottom is my target and has been since day one. Anything else is a bonus! 5th from bottom maybe ..... but safe at least 4 weeks before the end of the season though please ... but just to keep the interest already have won The JPT and an FA Cup final to look forward would help soften the blow
Glasgow_Saint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 (edited) we caN STILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS Edited 6 December, 2009 by Glasgow_Saint
alpine_saint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Pearson is currently flying high with Leicester in the Championship. I've gone and figured;) His avoidance of the facts is utterly hillarious..
View From The Top Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 I have already. I'd settle for not getting relegated. Stop being such an attention seeking drama queen Thrush. There is no chance of us being relegated and only a total and utter moron believes otherwise.
Micky Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Never thought we would make the play offs this season anyway - neither do I think we'll reach that high next either - fwiw.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Stop being such an attention seeking drama queen Thrush. There is no chance of us being relegated and only a total and utter moron believes otherwise. shut the **** up you boring repetitive moron
Thedelldays Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Is thrush an endearing term these days..?
Window Cleaner Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 the play-offs weren't a realistic proposition 4 or 5 games into the season. They're even less realistic now.We ain't going to make up 15 points from here on we'll have done well to be 5 or 6 points off of those positiions at the end of the season.Until our defence is properly sorted (and by that I mean 3 or 4 new players depending on injuries etc) we'll just bump along gaining mid table points and getting further and further off the P-Os
saint lard Posted 21 November, 2009 Author Posted 21 November, 2009 Stop being such an attention seeking drama queen Thrush. There is no chance of us being relegated and only a total and utter moron believes otherwise. Not wishing to be inflamatory in anyway but we have as much chance as anyone down that end of the table. We don't have a god given right to survive, however good we think we are. I certainly did not predict Brighton giving us a football lesson. Nothing is certain in football, therefore i concede i am a moron.
Rory Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 We had no chance of play-offs/promotion anyway. Glad people are starting to realise.
.comsaint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 We had no chance of play-offs/promotion anyway. Glad people are starting to realise. I dunno. A win at Hartlepool on Tuesday & we'll all be back on the 'promotion bandwagon' again!
BallBoy Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Just for a moment I thought there was a chance of 6th place but it is gone now. After a great run in October we were in a situation where a win against Brighton would have given us momentum to go forward. A further win against an in form Norwich followed by several more winnable games against lesser opposition in December would have seen us flying and in with an outside chance. I think that is gone now. Mid table will be a good season now and the problem will then be keeping this squad together.
Rasiak-9- Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Yeah I kinda gave up on the play-offs last week against Brighton and actually had serious doubts after the 2-2 against Orient, where Lamberts brace really did paper over a hell of a lot of cracks there, especially in defence, to be honest we were shocking then as well. The OP has pretty much summed up my feelings for the season. I'd like to see us try and make comfortable mid-table, but hey, if we finish more than 10 points away from the play-offs and don't get relegated - then the 10 points have been meaningless and our punishment inflicted on a wasted season anyway (just to put a positive spin on it all) I think we should definately aim to finish on a high though, just to try and send out a message that we're really up for it next season and also to attract a few more players in over the summer. This team will take a while to gel, but I think Pardews doing ok and I don't see relegation as much of a threat if I'm honest.
S-Clarke Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 The playoffs were always a long shot, let's push on and finish the season in the top half, looking at the bigger picture that would be decent IMO.
.comsaint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 The playoffs were always a long shot, let's push on and finish the season in the top half, looking at the bigger picture that would be decent IMO. My worry is that the likes of Lallana et al won't spend yet another season in L1 - so if we don't make it up this season - we'll lose the likes of Lallana, Spiderman, and others.
aintforever Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 I think the Brighton performance put to bed any lingering hopes of play-offs, today just confirmed it. We're still 4 points adrift, we need to get out of the relegation zone quick, I don't want another squeaky bum run in.

View From The Top Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 shut the **** up you boring repetitive moron Get back to being very happy that we didn't win.
saints_is_the_south Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 I think after the recent run us as fans have got a bit carried away with thinking we are going to make the play offs. That thought has to stop for now, we just need to concentrate on getting back on a good run & getting out of the relegation zone. Talk of being in a relegation scrap is b*llocks as much as expecting a play off place is. For my mnoey I think we'll end up mid table this season & then be top next. If we are to make the play offs we need to go on a run of about 8 or 9 wins in a row starting from Tuesday.
Legod Third Coming Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 29 games and a 16 point deficit to make up? I haven't given up hope by any means. Today we drew with a team at the top of their game thanks to a couple of individual errors. Sure 2 points in 9 isn't great, but Murty is fit, Connolly is getting fitter and perhaps with Thomas back for Trottman, who knows. Oh and maybe go back to 4-5-1. That was working well, I wonder why we changed it...
Huffton Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 I've said all along that this season will be about survival and consolidation, and anything above 5th from bottom will be a bonus. Nothing has changed my view, yes seven games unbeaten is play off form but we were so far behind the pack to begin with that it would take a monumental second half of the season to get there. Personally I am really enjoying being a Saints fan for the first time ina long time, I saw a cracking game of football today between two top sides, not the best result, but oh well worse things have happened, 3 points at Hartlepool and today will be pretty much forgotten. Alp, Glasgow etc, carry on knee jerking and I'll carry on enjoying supporting my team.
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 I never expected us to get to the playoffs anyway. As long as we stay up this season, we'll push on for sure next season, when I fully expect us to AT LEAST make the playoffs.
saint lard Posted 21 November, 2009 Author Posted 21 November, 2009 We've picked up 23 points or has that passed you by? Err, no,but that does not make us immune from going down however.
Genk Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 We've picked up 23 points or has that passed you by? Exactly. Unfortunately the -10 along with a poor first 6 games seriously dented our chances. We are too good to be relegated, we just competed with, in my opinion, the best team in League 1 today. We lost to Brighton, fair enough it wasn't a great result but I can't believe some people think avoiding relegation should be our main target this season. On the other hand we are not the best team in the league, however we are without doubt a top 6 team. The next 4-5 games are crucial, if we can win the majority then I do not see why we can't be looking for the playoffs. We will have a clearer picture by Christmas I think. Pardew will strengthen the team further in January, but it worries me too that Lallana might not hang around. He looks far too good for this league.
NickG Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Don't expect to get to play offs due to -10 and slow start. However, this team, since it was put together is playing like and winning points, like a play off team. It is still easily possible - particular with the likelihood that we will be better placed than many others to improve in Jan window. I wouldn't say it was probable
Saints foreva Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Anyone who actually thinks we will get into the play offs need to have their head checked.
benjii Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Anyone who truly thinks we might go down is acting like a complete pussy IMO.
ericofarabia Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 My worry is that the likes of Lallana et al won't spend yet another season in L1 - so if we don't make it up this season - we'll lose the likes of Lallana, Spiderman, and others. A very important point to remember. The players will maybe form their own opinions of what our chances are and make the decision to stay or go depending on how they feel the next season might pan out. An all conquering L1 or a mid place Champ team is the probable choice.
benjii Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 I think we're all agreed that mid-table is the likely finish.
alpine_saint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Anyone who truly thinks we might go down is acting like a complete pussy IMO. I dont think it either, all I am saying is that ultimately I will be satisfied with it.
John B Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 I never expected us to get to the playoffs anyway. As long as we stay up this season, we'll push on for sure next season, when I fully expect us to AT LEAST make the playoffs. Seems very reasonable to me but as Lallana's contract ends in 2011 I expect that he maybe sold soon
musesaint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Much depends on who we buy in January What we need to remember is that the money and comitment is now there to push on We've got a reasoanble run of games coming up and we still have a very outside chance of Playoffs At least we're winning games and looking like we could score goals ..shame the Defence leaks so many recently
John B Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 no to play offs but JPT final Very true Play offs have been unlikely since the end of August
Saint Fan CaM Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 With -10 and a poor start to the season we were never going to get to the play-offs except in kids dreams. If we continue with a steady progression then mid-table will be about right this season. The key for next season will be about the January window and the close season and how there are used to strengthen the team. AP has some hard decisions to make to raise the overall standard of the squad. 2-3 more players of Connolly's standing would be fantastic. I think we'll be buying Antonio in January BTW.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 (edited) Playoffs is still on! Edited 6 December, 2009 by Glasgow_Saint
benjii Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Yes, it must. Absolutely. Must indeed. Musty, musty, must.
