Suhari Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Pulled my hamstring 20 minutes ago doing sprints in the park. Completely out of the blue, a bit like getting shot in the back of the leg. Never done it before. I can walk on it, but have to have the injured leg on 'tiptoes'. It bloody hurts. Any treatment advice? RICE I guess. How long should I leave it before I start stretching etc? Advice very welcome.
Suhari Posted 21 November, 2009 Author Posted 21 November, 2009 Think I've answered my own questions. Lazy git. http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/back/hamstrings/hamstringstrain.htm Looks like I have a 'Grade 2'.
L1Minus10 Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 The tough bit is not playing football etc too soon. If you do that and it goes again you end up with with a chronic injury that can affect your back as the scar tissue forces the hammy to shorten and not be as flexible I speak from experience....

Having said that, I TORE a hamstring once, doing the splits when I wasn't properly warmed up (silly me). I heard it tear - sounded like material being ripped  I freeze sprayed my leg and carried on dancing. I can still do the splits
LGTL Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Just don't return too quick. It'll be a weak spot now though I expect, once it happens to begin with it usually occurs time and time again.
benjii Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Women can't pull their hamstring. It's a footballing injury. HTH.

Jesus Reigned Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 I pulled my hamstring a few years ago playing footy. For about 3 weeks in a row I'd rest it for a week, feel fine by the Saturday then it would go again within 5 minutes of the game starting. Need to give it at least 2 weeks rest I'd say.

Ewell Posted 22 November, 2009 Posted 22 November, 2009 These are brilliant sites for injury advice. http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/back/hamstrings/hamstringstrain.htm http://www.physioroom.com/injuries/hip_and_thigh/hamstring_strain_sum.php My partner is a sports masseusse and sports therapist (Physio for sport) and she swears by them. Once the injury has settled down and been iced for a few days then seek professional advice!

So looks like Christmas before I can run, and I would think January before I can go back to Thai Boxing. Bugger. Maybe I'm getting too old.
richie Posted 22 November, 2009 Posted 22 November, 2009 done it a couple of times playing football. The second after coming back too soon. Went off after about 5 minutes. Rest is the best cure. It may feel fine but once you go flat out it may tell a different story. Difficult injury to get rid of!!
