Saints foreva Posted 30 November, 2009 Share Posted 30 November, 2009 Having Southampton as a host city will make the bid much stronger for England. Lets face it, what will the WC reps want to see from the England bid? Plymouth - Need a new ground, need new training facilities, train links to other cities are pretty poor. Bristol City - Need a new ground. Southampton - Already have a ground worthy of playing international matches, Fantastic training facilities and great train links to London. Not only this but having the major civillian port in the UK also ?? Plus a major airport. If we are given the green light i think it is an easy answer. benjii Posted 30 November, 2009 Share Posted 30 November, 2009 I think it depends whether we are competing with Bristol and Plymouth or whether we are a potential additional bidder along with those two. Both will have bids far in advance of ours and regardless of how much better Southampton could be it will be tough to make up that ground. We are also assuming the political will is there. It would be quite easy for local politicians to say how they would back the bid, knowing full well that there is no chance we would be allowed to bid.... Joesaint Posted 30 November, 2009 Share Posted 30 November, 2009 There is now a facebook page "Let SOUTHAMPTON bid to be a host city for the 2018 World Cup", worth a try. I heard on Football Focus that Motty is a VP of the 2018 bid. Wonder if bombarding his email with pleas to allow our city to bid would get him on our side? Just joined and asked all my mates and family to as well.

Junction 9 Posted 30 November, 2009 Share Posted 30 November, 2009 To save me wading through all this, can some one explain a few things. Don't FIFA require all grounds to be over 40K and if so are we going to extend SMS? Who would fund any extention of SMS and would it be temporary or permanent? We don't need 32K currently let alone 40K. Seems like a lot of effort for a few group games in the world cup.
hutch Posted 1 December, 2009 Share Posted 1 December, 2009 As probably the only member on here currently living in a 2010 host City, I must say that I'm not so sure that it's really worth all the effort that is required. Sure, there is loads of hype. But there is a huge financial cost. It only lasts for 6 weeks FFS. Of course I'm looking forward to seeing a couple of England games. But I doubt that I'd get a ticket to the final anyway, if we got there. So like most of you there, I'll end up watching most of it on the telly, in between being stuck in traffic jams and paying four times the normal price for everything. Do Saints really need a 40,000 seater? It's really just about egos at the end of the day. It's no big deal for South Coast fans to get on a train to London to watch the games. Plymouth - forget it. And Bristol - The Millenium Stadium's on their doorstep, but that's politics again.

Pilchards Posted 1 December, 2009 Share Posted 1 December, 2009 Something is going on otherwise we would have been put in our place by now Yes I do agree something is going on but I think it's more SFC knocking on the door with our plans for 2018 but they won't say nothing to the press until they get an official answer back. Joesaint Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 I joined 'Let SOUTHAMPTON bid to be a host city for the 2018 World Cup' on facebook and just had this message; there's 26,000 on the Southampton Network and over 6000 in the Saints related supporters groups. Surely a few of these would like Southampton to host some 2018 Worlds Cup matches at St Mary's. So forward on the group page to anyone you know who might agree with us and I'll put out a press release about the group's support when we reach the 500 mark (by the end of the week would be great). I heard that John Motson is a bid vice-president and am trying to lock down an email for him that we could all send a plea to. I'll also have a look into David Beckham's contact details to see if we can get a message of support from him. We have A FORTNIGHT before the FA makes a decision on which cities will be attached to their final bid offered to FIFA. Let's give it a go
hutch Posted 2 December, 2009 Share Posted 2 December, 2009 Even though it's difficult to admit it, Merrington did make one good point last night. The reason it's all gone horribly quiet recently is probably because all the "powers that be" in English football are down in Cape Town at the moment for a jolly. Let's give it a go Problem is though that the FA ,not unreasonably, will want to see a tangible bid and proposal from the interested cities to make that decision.Unless we have quietly put something in front of them, which I doubt, then we are not even in contention. No amount of cyber stalking of Motson,Beckham or the FA will change that.

Don't you just love all those negative people out there? So what if it doesn't work, we can say we tried
