suewhistle Posted 26 November, 2009 Posted 26 November, 2009 Saints have averaged over 30k in seasons when in the Premiership before so we could get close to 40k for alot of games if doing well. Plus if they went for the German model of lower ticket prices I reckon they could get those sorts of figures regularly.
CB Saint Posted 26 November, 2009 Posted 26 November, 2009 Read this article with some amusement. Whilst it would be absolutely unbelievably fantastic if it came to us, I am certain that SCC do not have the wit or vision to pull something like this off. They just cannot seem to grasp the bigger picture for anything which may improve the city.
John B Posted 26 November, 2009 Posted 26 November, 2009 Lord Mawhinney is on the executive board in charge of the World Cup 2018 bid. Well you learn something every day thank you
Thedelldays Posted 26 November, 2009 Posted 26 November, 2009 Population means **** all if there is little interest in football, they have the same population now yet still get half of what we get despite being a league higher. Saints would struggle to fill a 40K stadium, it would fill for probably the big 4 plus maybe Spurs. Bristol or Plymouth - no way. Big cities - footballing minnows All the plasticS would fill it up.
SaintNeil90 Posted 26 November, 2009 Posted 26 November, 2009 Anyone ever seen plans of how the stadium would look if it was expanded? I know they built it so it could be expanded so surely they must have pictures somewhere of what it would look like.
The9 Posted 26 November, 2009 Posted 26 November, 2009 It can't be Drogbaj as he is too slow to get offside in the first place. As for his constant injuries, Im told he got Swine flu walking past an empty pork pie wrapper. I was on about Waigo.
Red and White Russ Posted 26 November, 2009 Posted 26 November, 2009 I would be very surprised if we were allowed to put a bid in at this very late stage in the process, regardless of facilities, location etc etc. Firstly the F.A. are sticklers for rules, and officialdom, and secondly the other 15 bidding cities would probably kick up a fuss about us being let in at the last minute. Shame, but it's not going to happen folks.
The9 Posted 26 November, 2009 Posted 26 November, 2009 Fwiw I think pretty much any team debuting in the Premier League with a catchment of the whole South West of England would sell out a 40k stadium for a few of the big games and could pack it with competitive pricing, there would be loads of Devon and Cornwall-based football fans who'd want to see Prem matches for one season at least.

Agree with this. The nearest prem team to Plymouth is probably Portsmouth... A long way

How last minute are we? We should have made our intentions clear at least five years ago. That bloody Rupert Lowe!

Oh....2018? Christ! How last minute are we? We should have made our intentions clear at least five years ago. That bloody Rupert Lowe! I dont think Rupert Lowe would have not wanted the World Cup to be staged at his Stadium perhaps there were other reasons why Southampton was not chosen but of course you maybe correct. The Capacity perhaps may have been a problem especially as Portsmouth were apparently at the time due to build a new stadium After all the Rugby world Cup is a possibility at St Mary's.
sandwichsaint Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 Agree with this. The nearest prem team to Plymouth is probably Portsmouth... A long way Aren't Brum/Villa/Wolves nearer?
hutch Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 Also, you get to keep the stadium... Not if it's built out of scaffolding!
OldNick Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 I was on about Waigo.yeah I knew that but anything to have a pop at Baj. lol
altoniansaints Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 If the local councils are paying for a 40k seater stadium what team would argue??? if southampton council offered to build us a 80k seater stadium we as a club would not say no

I can't think of much worse than playing in an 80k stadium when the max attendance (even in the Prem) would be around 35k.
Thedelldays Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 Aren't Brum/Villa/Wolves nearer? either way.....miles away
Matthew Le God Posted 27 November, 2009 Author Posted 27 November, 2009 Who'd have thought it...Portsmouth council supporting Southampton for a World Cup bid. http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/4764104.Potential_Southampton_cup_bid_backed_by_Portsmouth_leader/
Matthew Le God Posted 27 November, 2009 Author Posted 27 November, 2009 This shows why a bid from Portsmouth or Southampton could be import to the FA as FIFA may look kindly to a good spread around the nation for venues. With no Portsmouth that is a big gap in the map!

With no Portsmouth that is a big gap in the map! do you not think (looking at that) that it is kinda spread out around the country...?
altoniansaints Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 Wouldn't we? I can't think of much worse than playing in an 80k stadium when the max attendance (even in the Prem) would be around 35k. us supporters would maybe say that but the club would happily have 80k seats available for the big 4/5 games in a season! especially as the stadium would cost the club very little
Whitey Grandad Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 do you not think (looking at that) that it is kinda spread out around the country...? The vast majority of the population lives in the south east, so it would be better to look at a demographic map rather than a geographic one.
Thedelldays Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 The vast majority of the population lives in the south east, so it would be better to look at a demographic map rather than a geographic one. probably why they will have 2 maybe 3 stadiums in london
Matthew Le God Posted 27 November, 2009 Author Posted 27 November, 2009 do you not think (looking at that) that it is kinda spread out around the country...? Well it is weighted very heavily towards the north and has no venue the large conurbations in the South East. A good spread of 12 stadiums would be... 6 stadiums in the South Plymouth, Bristol, Southampton and London (Wembley, Spurs, Arsenal) and 6 stadiums in the North Manchester (Old Trafford and CoM's), Liverpool, Nottingham, Birmingham, Newcastle

Matthew Le God Posted 27 November, 2009 Author Posted 27 November, 2009 we are not a bidding city by the looks of it and it does not look essential that a city (an hour commute to london) has to be a venue According to the Portsmouth Council leader it may not be too late.
Thedelldays Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 According to the Portsmouth Council leader it may not be too late. what about the FA...?
Matthew Le God Posted 27 November, 2009 Author Posted 27 November, 2009 what about the FA...? Well the guy from Pompey city council would have been talking to the FA very recently yet still thinks Southampton have a chance and so do SEEDA(South East England Development Agency).
Matthew Le God Posted 27 November, 2009 Author Posted 27 November, 2009 I'm sure we would all like to hear from the club if anything is happening if anything. Just a guess but as this has been in the Echo as main story for last couple of days if the club were not in talks with the FA then they would release a statement to end media speculation saying Southampton can't bid. The lack of anything from the club to me suggests they are still talking to the FA and will disclose what has gone on after talks have concluded either successfully or not.
Prince Jazzbo Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 I dont know if this has already been mentioned. Plymouth's bid is a joint bid with Plymouth CC and Devon and Cornwall County Councils, by doing that, they're probably able to spread costs and workload across the 3 councils. Perhaps the City Council and Hampshire CC should look at a joint bid. Afterall it will be instrumental in attracting tourist to the New Forest, and elswhere in Hants as well as the football. One of the SA venues is in a town called Nelspruit, its not a very big town, and its miles from nowhere. However, its the nearest big town to Kruger National Park, and there is an expectation that people will visit the park while they are up that way. They're even planning to use the lodges etc in the park for accomodation. Fanzones etc could be outside the City, i.e Queen Victoria County Park, or the Rosebowl (if there's no clash with Cricket) or similar places. It doesn't all have to be within the City Council boundaries, and HCC will also benefit from anything going on down here. I suppose my point is, we should attempt a regional bid with St Mary's being the venue for the games, and not just restricting it all within the City. Having said all of that, I'm not sure the World Cup will come here anyway.

alehouseboys Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 If Messrs. Liebherr and Cortese believe expanding SMS's capacity as we edge back towards the Prem is a good idea then getting the FA to part fund it is probably another good idea. I just wonder whether Mr Liebherr intends to still be here in 2018?
Joesaint Posted 27 November, 2009 Posted 27 November, 2009 A bloke on the echo website put this up; Here starts the Echo readers/Saints supporters bid to persuade the FA to let the city bid. Anyone thinking of doing a facebook group page for this???

eelpie Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 It looks more likely that England's bid may succeed now that Warner is backing it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/8383459.stm So we should really begin a campaign aimed at the FA for Southampton to be allowed to bid. if there was enough groundswell of support in the city for it we could convince them. We just need belief!

Joesaint Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 I actually think NC will be trying very hard behind the scenes to try and bring it down here, not even sure why but just think he may be one of those people who can make things happen, just like getting ML to buy us. Not really sure if there is anything the humble fan can do, but if it were local as well as it being great for business and investment within the city I would love to take my kids if not to the stadium (if prices are stuped as well as going to corperate bosseds or whatever) would love to take my kids as well as the whole family to the 'fan zones'. I know its a very very long shot but I have my fingers crossed.
hypochondriac Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 Markus might not be around that long. He's an old man.

Joesaint Posted 28 November, 2009 Posted 28 November, 2009 I have phoned the FA; the number is on this link http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/WhoWeAre/ContactUs/NewsAndFeatures/2007/Contact_Us.aspx As the top number relates to all football matters I thought I would phone and leave a message stating why I believe Southampton should be accepted, it really would be great for Hampshire and I think it best not to give up till the last min, if others can leave a message they all will go to the correct department 'world cup host citys' and at least its may help more than a kick up the arse!! COYR

theyin Posted 30 November, 2009 Posted 30 November, 2009 There is now a facebook page "Let SOUTHAMPTON bid to be a host city for the 2018 World Cup", worth a try. I heard on Football Focus that Motty is a VP of the 2018 bid. Wonder if bombarding his email with pleas to allow our city to bid would get him on our side?
