VectisSaint Posted 21 November, 2009 Share Posted 21 November, 2009 Really think we should only honour Channon MLT George Lawrence We can honour who we like, we are talking here about honours being bestowed by Solent University, I suspect they will not consider George as being worthy of an Honorary Doctorate of Sport. Nineteen Canteen Posted 22 November, 2009 Share Posted 22 November, 2009 I guess you also don't know then that Channon played for Saints before Ron, and like Channon also played for Norwich. This hatred of Pompey that you seem to know so much about is a relatively new phenomenon, in the days when our great players moved down the road (pre M27) to play out their careers at a lower standard club was in the days when there was a rivalry, rather than hatred. The two things are very different, rivalry is healthy, hatred is not. Many many supoprters of Saints in those days would also slum it in the intervening weeks by going to watch Pompey (and vice versa of course). I used to regularly watch Pompey (though I did usually have the sense to stand in the away end). We were almost always in different divisions and so it was quite Ok to support both. In my time the real rivalry was with Spurs, not Pompey. It is a reflection on sad people like you, not the players that you would find it difficult if a Saints legend player for Pompey. Just in case you are unaware by the way, I'll let you into another little secret, Bobby Stokes not only played for Pompey but he was a Pompey lad. While Bobby is not in the same league as Mick and Ron (in legend statsu) he is still something of a Saints legend primarily down to that one moment of glory - but I guess you would have had a problem with that as well. Ron Davies, the greatest centre forward the WORLD has ever seen. FACT. Vectis I'm afraid you have me very wrong and I have been vocal against those who were excited by the prospect of the potential collapse of Portsmouth in the recent past. I applaud the attitude of the past where a Saints player or a Pompey player could move in the opposite direction without todays apparent hatred and that is why I asked the question (What would be the reaction of our fans today?). The point of which you clearly missed. As for Ron being the greatest centre forward in the world ever. Then I'm afraid you are guilty of looking at it through red and white striped glasses. Greatest in a Saints shirt maybe but in the world? Wouldn't make the top 100 but that is hardly a disgrace - just realistic. I am glad you agree that Saints and Pompey both safe and achieving success and hopefully in the Premier League is great for both clubs and football in general on the South Coast. I have and always will be a great advocate of it. I love the rivalry but detest the social decline that largely gives way to hatred. It is sad the hate but I am very happy I am not one who gives into hatred and resent your comments as you have classically responded to the poster and not my post itself. Read what I write before responding and just becasue I may have a negative view on 3 people in partcular it does not mean I hold that view about everything / one else. If you had any undeerstanding of the history of Saints you would know that these were the words of the song we used to sing for Ron. Of course the view is biased towards Saints, butr actually in this case I think you would find that anyone over the age of 10 would actually recognise that Ron was one of the greatest proper centre forwards ever seen - Sir Matt Busby was a good judge and that was what he thought when he tried to sign him. Vectis what you don't get is that others can have a more balanced view of things. Being condescending about singing the greatest centre forward the word has ever seen doesn't support your argument and guess what I get it. If you went to games you would appreciate that we still sing about our club being the greatest team we have ever seen and yet we are in our lowest poistion for 50 years. I sing it but if asked to say which is the greatest club team in the world today I wouldn't say Saints but they are the club I love the most and that is the difference. Love and reality. All part of the bravado of the football crowd and perhaps the most honest shout I heard at a match this year was the United crowd singing you're only here to see United which applied relevantly to about 10,000 of our fans.
