Dimond Geezer Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 There seems to be some conjecture as to this gentlemans age, his profile gives his dob as April 1, 1923, making him 86. I doff my cap to you sir.

I doff my cap to you sir. I have a friend of similar age who was a season holder at Charlton until they were relegated. A Londoner by birth who watched Fulham for years moved to Kent and wanted to watch the players of today.

Third Division South Days Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 What a great story, Duncan. Looking back at an earlier Saints publication" A complete history of .. " The facts are correct: january 2 1932 we did indeed win 3-1 Crowd 2000 (!) Scorers: Sillet 2, Arnold. line up 2-3-5 (as was in those days.)¨ Scriven in goal, Adams.W - Keeping Shelley - Bradford - Luckett O'Grady -Jepson - Sillett.C - Wilson - Arnold A few names there that my late father used to quote; Scriven, Keeping, Luckett and Arnold. Pretty certain that the John Arnold playing in that match is one of only 12 englishmen who represented their country at both football and cricket. He only gained one cap in each sport against Scotland and New Zealand.

eelpie Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 Err, I really think it's best if you don't. Why? Marcus is interested in the club's history and support and OC exemplifies this. As does this thread. As also does the 'Big Ron Davies Update' thread. I'm sure he would be interested in reading them (imho)
Third Division South Days Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 CB Fry was another so two Saints out of 12 He was certainly playing for Hampshire when capped at cricket but think he was a Fulham player when he played against Scotland.

yorkie Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 No - is it a hoax? Doesn't the Old Codger really exist?
krissyboy31 Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 I was trying to be subtle, maybe I should just state the bleedin' obvious - because of the bit in bold ! You do know people ARE born on April 1st?
The Old Codger Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 You do know people ARE born on April 1st? Oh FFS, I'm not sure who's winding who up anymore. Sorry folks. The Old Codger does not exist. He is a username shared between several people. The "My first away game" post was totally made up and posted by Wurzel. I - (Wurzel) - had no idea it would be taken seriously, and was totally shocked so many believed it. I guess there's a lesson there in never taking anyone you don't know on the internet at face value. When it was posted there was no agenda except for a **** take. But the respect shown to the"old guy" and offers of lifts and free tickets has set me thinking. Everyone must know an older generation Saints fan - family, neighbour, sat in the corner of the pub, try the local rest home even - who can't get to games any more because of a combination of lack of finance and/or the physical inability to get to game. The club has had plenty of Kids for a Quid days. How about an "Accompany A Codger" day. It would help fill up some of the empty seats, it would make an old man or woman very happy, and who knows, you may even learn something (actually true) about the Saints days of old. Now Marcus can see the thread

He only gained one cap in each sport against Scotland and New Zealand. Your right as far as I can see. John Arnold was one of those " magical" left wingers and although he moved onto Fulham in 1933, he did score 46 goals in only 106 startsfor Saints (1928-33) - pretty good for any striker - let alone a winger. The "footballing cricketers" (cricket was regarded as the more "gentleman-ly sport" ) were numerous in this period - but very few ever reached the level good enough to be considered to play for their country in BOTH sports. JA was best-known as Hampshire's opening bat from 1929 ..until 1950 (aged 43) and to think that he lost 6 years of play because of the War - fantastic achievement.

Now Marcus can see the thread pretty warped sense of humour, you guys. A lot of people including myself got a real wave of nostalgia thinking about some of our REAL Old Codgers who've been supporting the club for a very long time. Have a good laugh at us all when you have a pint together, but personally I think you belong in the same boat with Thierry Henry.
aintforever Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 This thread reminds me of an away trip to Everton years ago. We ended up in a home fans pub and we got chatting to these scousers and among them was this old codger who was probably about 80. Every game he would turn up a the boozer completely skint, and these guys would buy him a few beers and club together and get him a ticket for the game. He was probably loaded and on fiddle but fair play to the scousers who were not that well off but all chipped in for the old geezer.

RedAndWhite91 Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 Maybe it was like this: "Alright lads, what shall we do tonight? Go down the pub? Go to a club? Get a curry and watch the football?" "Nah, let's create a fake account on an internet forum and pretend we're some old bloke" "Wow, why didn't I think of that!"

Draino76 Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 Oh please get a grip you lot! It was a joke, end of. I was slightly 'surprised' an 80yr old was posting on a net forum using up to date slang but hey; there u go. Having said that my 75 yr old grandad is on Facebook. You lot liked the idea of helping the old godger so; why don't you? There must be someone? BTW my grandad supports Man City and has no interest in going to SMS.
Big John Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 (edited) So, is the joke on 'us' or is this a mickey take on older people? I can see that it was not inteded to to upset anyone, however inadvertently some people have been drawn in and with genuine sincerity made some heartwarming comments that are now deflated. Hot sure I get what the joke is though, as from my understanding both Wurzel and Fitz are 'mates'. Apoplogies if that is not the case, but if true then is Wurzel trying to make a monkey out of FF or is this one of those instances of two (or more) brilliant minds coming together and creating what will go down as the greatest wind-up in the history of the Great British tea-brak? Jolly japes, carry on. Edited 20 November, 2009 by Big John
Draino76 Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 Well it looks like the joke was on us. Are you big enough to get over it John?
Big John Posted 20 November, 2009 Posted 20 November, 2009 /\ I am over it now thanks to a near perfect room temperature Shiraz. Don't let it happen again Wurzel.

Think if you were his generation, had spent £thousands following the team and at the end of your days couldn't afford to continue watching SAINTS 'cos you were skint !

david in sweden Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 Err, I really think it's best if you don't. If you haven't realised it Wurzel, you (and your compatriots) have hit a raw nerve with many. In someways our club is like a family. At least it was for me during many years at the Dell. You could stand almost anywhere and start a conversation with someone who was just as dedicated as you may have been yourself. As a teenager, I used to walk down Hill Lane to the Dell and often met, (someone I assumed to be a retired army officer) and we would banter about the match, players....how we admired the strike force of Paine, Sydenham and Davies (it was that era). In departing to his seat in the stands, he would always bid me a polite farewell and say " well, goodbye old man, take care ". A quite remarkable memory for me. It's so long ago now, he has undoubtedly passed away now. Or, like standing under the West, and chatting with the FIVE brothers who turned up on irregular occasions and spiced our pre-match chats with tales of; Roper and Wayman, Ted Bates and Bill Ellerington. My own late father had some stirring tales about his friendship with Ted Drake, and the extraordinary saga of " Boy " Catlin (whose relatives I met many years ago). Whilst a schoolboy, Catlin played in an English Shield (YOUTH CUP) game at The Dell scored 17 goals in one game (and 8 in the following). After playing as an amateur for Arsenal, he signed for Saints but as the War began, Catlin like many others joined the Forces and sadly dies when the War began, and sadly he died when his ship was torpedoed off Crete in 1941? Who knows what a career he may have had ...IF ...? Those are REAL stories Wurzel and many of us cherish the heroes of a bygone era. (There may well be a " real " Old Codger " out there, and I'm sure he has great stories to tell) - for me at least, that thread was just a sick joke. SORRY! My real point is, for many people, such tales are history that we warm to and appreciate all the more. The rather "sick " little " joke sounds like something out of a " Wag the Dog " script and is

Michelle Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 lol, anyone would think Wurzel's committed murder or something... what's the worst that's actually happened as a result of it? Oh noes, a few people feel a bit silly. I'm sure there are more pressing matters in your life that you feel the need to rant about than this. Move on...
Deppo Posted 21 November, 2009 Posted 21 November, 2009 I find it utterly abhorrent that some people come on here with multiple log-ins, masquerading as someone else to hoodwink others in the name of 'humour'. Sick.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 22 November, 2009 Posted 22 November, 2009 This whole "joke" has been pathetic, quite frankly. I mean, what is it with some people that they need to have multiple log-ins? If you got something to say, then just say it. Don't hide behind a false username. I think those who are guilty of this crime should be banned and I also applaud the conduct of those who were the victims of these scoundrels.
Nineteen Canteen Posted 22 November, 2009 Posted 22 November, 2009 I find it utterly abhorrent that some people come on here with multiple log-ins, masquerading as someone else to hoodwink others in the name of 'humour'. Sick. Morally reprehensible it really is and goes to show how decent and upstanding our fan base is. It's like when your local Sporting Hero admits that the time he ran his hardest during a game was to try and deliberately kick the ball out of play so and he a few associates could hoover up on a betting scam. We don't have double standards at this club. Wurzel can I suggest you change your name to Matthew?
tpbury Posted 22 November, 2009 Posted 22 November, 2009 I don't know why those 'taken in' by this thread need be upset. The type of person who had these experiences is probably still around, and there's been some interesting stories to read. So, probably not posted for the right reasons, but the right result has come out - we can now suggest the club goes and tracks down any 75+ year old supporter and give them a freebie of some sort. (thinking about it, my dad is 73 nearly and goes pretty often to midlands games with his mate of the same age, so 'Old Codger' probably does represent a significant number of people). Also if it is Fitzhugh who does the book thing, there seems to be material here for supporters memories over the years - call it 'The Old Codger'!!

And possibly go a little easier on our footballing heroes too. I suspect Wurzel might have learned his lesson. I hope so anyway.
Robsk II Posted 22 November, 2009 Posted 22 November, 2009 Multiple log-ins? Thought the mods tracked that sort of tomfoolery, like with that Kadeem idiot?
St Landrew Posted 22 November, 2009 Posted 22 November, 2009 Multiple log-ins? Thought the mods tracked that sort of tomfoolery, like with that Kadeem idiot? Crikey Robsk II. Do you want to start paying us..? [no ironic emoticon, this time]

benjii Posted 22 November, 2009 Posted 22 November, 2009 TBH, I suspected it was a fake all along but didn't want to get slagged off for stating so on the main board. "We were all wearing trilbys, they were all wearing flat caps" FFS! Just shows how history is entirely subjective.
